Do the taxi drivers at Disney only take cash? (I assume so.) Are they capable of giving back change? Am I supposed to tip the drivers?

Sorry for the questions...I have limited experience with taxis and we're using for transportation to our morning character breakfasts.

Thanks!! ::MinnieMo

I don't recall if the taxi company we used at Christmas took credit cards or not...we just paid in cash. We took a taxi from Saratoga Springs to Wilderness Lodge around 4:45pm so we could get to our dinner at Artist Point...with tip it cost $16, which we didn't think was all that bad. We did get stuck by a couple of red lights, which means the meter still ticks away and that is what upped our cost, but we'd still take a taxi again while at WDW.

Now, that said, I'm not sure if you know that for character breakfast meals WDW bus transportation does operate...even for those times before official park opening and is then free. There is some discussion on which bus to get on for this, but I did as was suggested here and checked at the front desk the day before our before hours breakfast at Donald's in AK. We were told ti take the AK bus and it would drop us right at the front...it did and it ended up that we were the only people on the bus. I've also read here at the DIS, for AK before hours breakfast you must take the bus because cars and taxis aren't permitted past the AK gate...only busses.

So, if you post which morning breakfast you will be attending, someone might be able to give you better information based upon their experiences because I'm sure it varies from location to location...i.e. if you're headed to a resort character breakfast v. one at a park location.

I hope this gave you a bit of helpful information and also hope that some others will chime in with more for you.

Have a magical trip!

We'll be having an "early" breakfast at:

Cafe May Cafe (Beach Club) and 'Ohana's (Polynesian). We've got a few dinners at resorts but I'm not too worried about using Disney transportation to the nearest park and then going from there.

Did you give the driver $16 even or did (can) he give you change back?

Drivers usually carry enough money to give you adiquite change (I wouldnt give a driver a 50 on a 11 dollar ride). Most cabs now have credit card machines, but some do not. The best idea is just to carry enough cash to get you where you need to go.

I actually gave the driver exact change. I always try to have plenty of ones, fives and tens on hand during vacation...especially ones and fives so I have tip money when I need it.

How much tip is expected?

Momsgoofy: Good tip on having lots of small bills. I think I'll have a "taxi" envelope all ready with $10's, $5's, and plenty of $1's. :thumbsup2

Standard taxi-paying procedure:

When you reach destination there will be an amount on the meter. A typical amount within WDW is going to be something over $10, let's call it $12.50. Hand driver a $20, ask for $5 in change, "can I have $5 back". Which would be a nice tip. If the driver hasn't earned such a good tip, ask for $6 in change, which would be a smallish tip.
