I came back. Couldnt resist.

What does "cut your bodies for the dead" mean?

In Bible times, when somebody was grieving the loss of a loved one or a friend, they would tear their clothes, wear sackcloth, and sprinkle ashes on themselves. They would also cut themselves in mourning. Like emos I guess.

wow.
calling it a sin to get a tattoo is a little much dont you think?

oh no. soon we're going to be petitioning against having a right to get a tattoo because its a "sin" in the bible, right?

Well, to Christians who like to obey God's commandments, it is a sin. He says not to do it, and to disobey would be a sin.

Stereotype much? Not all Christians petition every single little thing because we don't believe its right. Do you see Christians on your street corner protesting against strip joints or bars?

Unfortunately, yes.

sweetie.
christians stereotype themselves.
not to sound, you know. stereotypical or anything.

I love Kat Von D's start tattoos on her forehead.

Unfortunately, yes.

Well. I've never seen it or done it or heard of anybody doing it. I'm sorry you get that impression of Christians though.

Not really. We set ourselves apart so that we can glorify God. We try not to live in the world's standards.

I agree with HouseMD1120.

Thanks. :) My name's Hunter, by the way.

hahaha it was just too good to pass up though...
:p

Why thank you! Last I heard donkey kong likes trashy laydays! (;

Thats why I said "I guess." Aren't emos typically defined as someone who cuts?

Umm... no.
There are people who are actually depressed, like, SERIOUSLY depressed, who cut themselves because its a way of letting their feelings out and stuff.
Being emo is completely different.
That's just a label people give themselves.

Emo = Emotional.

You are stereotyping and saying that 'you guess' all emo's are cutters, but like if I said 'I guess' all black people are gangsters.

Cutting is a real problem. It's good to know that people who have a real psychiatric problem are going to hell. Very nice.

I didnt say people with psychiatric problems were going to hell. Nor did I say all emos were going to hell. And yes I know cutting is a real problem. Trust me, I know.

And I didnt bring up emos to insult them or anything. I was trying to find a modern day thing to use in explaining what "cutting oneself for the dead" meant for Sonya. If I just said "they cut themself," what good would that do? None at all, because saying that merely eliminates more words from the Biblical phrase and doesnt aptly describe what was going on.

edit. nevermind.

so i thought that we (as in modern day christians...past the whole events of jesus) were supposed to live by the new testament. not the old testament. so how would that explain tattoos being a "sin"?

What does "cut your bodies for the dead" mean?

I will explain it.

You can find it in:

Leviticus 19:28

In the Old Testament time of the Bible.

It says that,

The Jews learned a "custom" in Egypt.

Egyption Custom:

  • When a loved one died, a grieving person would make deep gashes on face + arms or legs.
  • Out of respect for the dead.
  • Sort of offering to the gods. (who presided over death.)
  • Tattoos were connected to names of idols + and were permanent signs of apostacy. (apostacy = faithlessness).

That is what it means.
