;)
I will explain it.

You can find it in:

Leviticus 19:28

In the Old Testament time of the Bible.

It says that,

The Jews learned a "custom" in Egypt.

Egyption Custom:

  • When a loved one died, a grieving person would make deep gashes on face + arms or legs.
  • Out of respect for the dead.
  • Sort of offering to the gods. (who presided over death.)
  • Tattoos were connected to names of idols + and were permanent signs of apostacy. (apostacy = faithlessness).

That is what it means.

So according to that back then, tattoos meant the wearer didn't have faith? And by the cuts, do you mean custom like it's custom to wear black to a funeral, white to a wedding, etc. here?

See, personally, I'm not bothered by tattoos. It's a personal choice. Someone once said that the only difference between people with tattoos and people without them, is that people with them don't care that the people without them don't have them. If you want to put art on your body, I don't care. It's not affecting me.
On the Christianity note, I was taught not to judge other people based on their appearances. Only God can judge me. Not one of us on this forum is God. So what grants us the right to pass judgement on what people want to do to their bodies? For some people, it is a religious act(as not everyone is Christian, and we should open our minds to that fact). You can worship your God(Gods, or Goddess, as the case may be) and I'll worship mine. Mine tells me not to judge other people on their appearance, and that I should concern myself more with being a good person and doing good things. Whether I put art on my body or not, does not affect whether or not I am a good person.
:]

I dont see where anybody was judging anyone else.

Just saying

I didnt say people with psychiatric problems were going to hell. Nor did I say all emos were going to hell. And yes I know cutting is a real problem. Trust me, I know.

And I didnt bring up emos to insult them or anything. I was trying to find a modern day thing to use in explaining what "cutting oneself for the dead" meant for Sonya. If I just said "they cut themself," what good would that do? None at all, because saying that merely eliminates more words from the Biblical phrase and doesnt aptly describe what was going on.
I don't know, 'cutters' maybe? Or you could just say, people in mourning would sometimes cut themselves. Simple as that.

I absolutely do not have a problem with your faith. I just had a problem with certain people's posts that went 'I don't believe tattoos are in the bible, so I don't have anything against them.' I guess I don't see how one line in a book could alter a person's perspective on something so instantly.

How could you go from being completely okay with it, to being against it that fast? It just sounded like those certain people weren't thinking for themselves, as much as relying on the bible to think for them. That is all.

Again, total agreement with hunter and jan :)

Again, Thank you. :)

Its because the Bible is Gods word, and we want to obey him.

And thank you for clarifying. And sorry for being a little short-tempered tonight.

so heres my question.
i thoght that the old testament was to show us what people believe/what god did before jesus.
and that we were supposed to follow the ways of the new testament, not the old testament. or so i was taught.
am i wrong?

Thats something that a lot of Christians and nonChristians have trouble with. I'm not one to talk about it, so I'm not going to. Once again I really dont want to tell somebody the wrong thing.

so. it is possible that we are supposed to follow the examples in the old testament but really focus more on the new testament because thats what invovles jesus and the how to get to heaven thing?

then, wouldnt that leave out tattoos being a sin? since it was written in the old testament?

not to step on toes, really. i just remembered something that my mom said.

No idea. If you google that question, you'll find some peoples ideas about it. But dont take it as truth since its only one persons opinion.

Again, Thank you. :)

Honestly, not trying to offend, do you just follow his word blindly? Don't you ever question it?

I'm also sorry, it's really hard to keep check of what I say on this board.

still, our body is not ours, it is the temple of Christ, so we are to have no marks upon it.

"Do not think that I [Jesus] have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. (Matthew 5:17-18)"

so we must still follow the old testament, in a way.

I dont question it because God is omniscient and never wrong.

I concur

I was trying to find that and I just couldnt think of where it was.

So your body is 100% natural?
I dont question it because God is omniscient and never wrong.

I concur
Hm. So you blindly follow him? Never ever questioning? Hm. I just think that God would want you to 100% believe in him, and can you ever 100% believe in something that you don't question?

You never once thought 'If God loves us, then why do all these bad things keep happening?'

I've had many priests tell me not to follow blindly.

Wanda I thought you had earrings? Wouldn't holes be considered unnatural and therefore a sin?
I'm not trying to me hurtful, I am just MAJORLY confused.

Jenny, as to what I bolded I have a reason. Yes, I've questioned God. I questioned him almost every day I was on chemo. But what I know now is that that bad thing turned out to be a good thing. I would've never been an advocate for pediatric cancer if it hadn't happent to me.
Sometimes bad things have good repercussions.
