Happy new year!!

Good morning ya'll. :goodvibes
Mean Queen, thank you. And the same to you!!
We had our annual get together at a neighbors place. I love living here. :goodvibes

HAPPY NEW YEAR SMILEYBUG!!

Our neighbors regaled us with fireworks last night......:headache:

We spent the evening watching old "Twilight Zone" episodes on the Sci-Fi channel, and now DH is watching "Dr. Who", which is running until 9pm tomorrow....

Happy New Year. Light snow today but we may be in for a big weekend storm.

I feel rotten. I have been strugling with my sinuses. I spent most of last weekend in bed. I was feeling better and now it's worse again. I'm trying to avoid the dreaded sinus infection. With all my other remedies, I've added Mucinex today. It's worth a try.

HAPPY NEW YEAR SADIEDOG!!!
I hope it's a really, really great year for you!:goodvibes

My in-laws are expecting a whopper of a storm, I think it's supposed to run from tonight right through Sunday?? Well, make sure you've got your essential supplies, rent a few movies, and get cozy I guess!

Thanks.

My son and I have new flashlights we got for Xmas and I went grocery shopping yesterday which included can soup if we lose power.

What?!? Am I the only person cooking collard greens and black-eyed peas today?!?

Well, I'm not, but one of my FB friends posted that she and her family had black-eyed peas, cornbread, cabbage and pork last night.:confused3 Guess it's a born-in-the-South thing cuz I have no clue!:rotfl:

-----------------------

ETA: I also discovered last night - to my horror - that Chinese food down here is NOTHING like we would get in NH......How very disappointing....

Living in Maine, I don't know anyone who has ever cooked collard greens and black-eyed peas. Am I supposed to be cooking them today? :rotfl2: This Yankee is lost? :rotfl: :confused3

My relatives in Florida would come to Maine and enjoy our Chinese food. They said you can't get any decent Chinese food in Florida. Apparently it's different.

We never had the chance to get Chinese food while we were in Florida, but we get it EVERY New Year's Eve so we started looking up places here in our part of TX. Of the menus that I could view on-line, not ONE of them had a Pu-Pu Platter.....:scared1: How can you go for Chinese food and NOT get a Pu-Pu Platter?!! Ugh.. We ended up ordering a variety of appetizers, but they still did not have Chicken Fingers, Chicken Wings, Spare Ribs OR Beef Teriyaki sticks!!!!!! I got Chicken Lo Mein, which was ok, but I much prefer Chow Mein and couldn't find it anywhere. The one "plus" that I'll give them was that we ordered Beef Fried Rice and instead of these little bitty pieces of beef, there were huge slices of the stuff and lots of it, which I was impressed with. But then again, this IS Texas.....

The things you mentioned they did NOT have are all normal items up here. Seems strange they didn't have them but it's 'Chinese food.' :confused3 Hmmmm, now I'm craving Chinese food.

Okay--Southerners cook greens and peas for luck and money in the New Year. I'm not really superstitious, but it's something my mom always did.

....sounds ALOT more appetizing than pickled herring...BLECCCHHHH!! :headache:

...the Tag Fairy toggled my tag TWICE in the last 10 minutes....!! :earseek:

I noticed that! This morning could barely read your location because it was light pink. Now, your whole tag section is scrolling rather than just part of it. If the tag fairy has that much time, maybe they can give some of our still tagless babnanas little something for the new year.

She must be over at kimmar's Swine Flu thread and not here. Otherwise, she would have said something about Legomom's big-girl panty-wearing horse.

Good morning ya'll. :goodvibes

Amanda....We had our Collard Greens and Hoppin John. :thumbsup2 Yummmmo!!! We also had a roast, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese and cornbread. With sweet potato pie and babnana pudding for dessert.

What on earth is Hoppin John?

Smiley (and creativeamanda), I would love to go to your house and try one of your southern cooked meals. I don't eat cows and pigs, but I bet the roast smelled wonderful. I love greens, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese and cornbread. I have not tried sweet potato pie. Is it similiar to pumpkin pie? I once made Paula Deans 'Not Yo Mama's Banana Pudding' and it was great.

Hey SadieDog. :goodvibes
Hoppin John is field peas and rice cooked together. Except I never get the ratio of rice to liquid right so I cook the field peas with ham hocks for flavoring. Then take the liquid out and add it to the raw rice. Once the rice is done I just mix it back in with the peas. (ham hocks removed.) I make my banana pudding by layering vanilla wafers with a mixture of vanilla pudding and banana cream pudding. Then a layer of a mixture of cream cheese, a large container of cool whip, a cup of sugar and a teaspoon of vanilla extract.(whipped until smooth) I do this until the glass container I use is full ending with the coolwhip/cream cheese mixture with crushed vanilla wafers on top. I love hearing about regional foods. My oldest DSs girlfriend is from Boston. So we had quite a discussion about food at the table last night. That was her first time eating collards and hoppin john. She wasn't crazy about the collards. But she liked the hoppin john. :)

I find regional foods interesting as well. I have not heard the term 'field peas.' Is this a dried pea? Ham hocks, interesting. Can't say I know anyone who cooks with those either. :lmao: I understand it gives a good flavor to food. Since I don't eat pigs, I buy turkey ham. I know, I know, not nearly as tastey. The past month, I have not been able to find it at Walmart or my local grocery store. It was always easy to purchase in the past. If I don't find it soon, I'm going to ask in the meat department.

I LOVE mac and cheese. Do you make a white sauce of flour, butter and milk then add grated cheese to melt?
