Swine flu in my son's class...

I'm glad my dd had this during the summer. Don't want to have to deal with this during the school year. I agree that the symptoms were pretty mild.

My fourteen year old (very healthy) daughter has it right now. Her symptoms are unfortunately not mild at all. Her best friend was back in school within a couple of days after having it. Our daughter has been out since last Thursday and will miss again tomorrow. I'm hoping for the day after. That'll be one week of missed class.

The count is now 2 kids in the class and 5 in the class of one of the siblings. Seven total at the school and no note to parents. What gives?

6 of my students and my co-teacher had it in the last month. I never got it, and neither did the other 18 kids+parapro so you have a good chance of it not hitting your family! :)

I can't speak to why the school is not sending out a notice but it may take a few days to gather the correct information so as not to create a panic.

Our schools sent a note out a week or two after I'd heard about the first cases just letting parents know what to watch for, how to minimize exposure, and when children who did become ill could return to school. Our local schools here had many absent students but classes continued. There were so many sick children that pharmacies were running short of Tamiflu.

One of our children tested positive and with Tamiflu her symptoms were only fever and cough. Our Pediatrician told us to assume that if anyone else in our home began running a fever we could assume it was flu and that they would call in Tamiflu for us. Another child began running a fever 3 days later. Both happened over the Labor Day weekend and both missed only a day or 2 of school. No one else in our family has become ill.

Stay calm, wash your hands, stay hydrated and well rested. That's the best advice I can give.

Just a heads up regarding Tamiflu, DH took about half the course of it before starting to experience one of the lesser publicized side effects: conjuntivitis (aka pink eye!). Also another one is a bad headache after taking the dose.

There has been swine flu in your son's class every year since your son started school. You just weren't aware of it. This year, with the government "wagging the dog" (perhaps to get a certain healthcare bill passed) suddenly we have epidemic and panic.

I was in school in the 70's. We had swine flu back then too. I survived.
