I must say, though, that even though the CDC & the WHO are telling everyone to be very cautious and alert if you really listen to what they've been saying, they seem to be very happy with the course of things right now, again that is very reassuring.

Also, from all the confirmed cases throughout the world, only one of the people involved has not been in mexico recently, but his girlfriend has. that is a spanish couple.

"Michigan's first case of the H1N1 virus was confirmed Wednesday. A 34-year-old woman in Livingston County who returned last week from a vacation in Texas was recovering at home from the H1N1 virus. Livingston County is 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

Health officials said the woman was at a San Antonio petting zoo, and her family traveled to and from Texas by car."

here is a question for the CDC experts.

For tamiflu to be effective, it must be taken in the first 48 hours.

Let's say that a family is leaving today for a two week visit to walt disney world. They are traveling from another state.

Now, let's say that this family gets flu-like symptoms while at walt disney world.

Which scenario would you prefer, in terms of spreading the flu.

1. The family came to wdw with a prescription for tamiflu from their physician. After a week at walt disney world they family gets flu-like symptoms, they go back to their hotel room and they call walgreens and have the prescription filled and a family member picks it up for them and brings it to their hotel room, where the family stays for the next few days. Remember that there is nothing dangerous about them taking tamiflu - it isn't going to hurt them to take it if they have picked up a stomach bug and do not have the flu. And because it has to be taken in the first 48 hours, it isn't like they are going to wait for test returns to confirm it is the swine flu before taking tamiflu anyway..

Correct me if I am wrong, please, but don't you have to have a prescription from an in-state physician to have it filled. I remember years ago a doctor told me that the prescription he wrote for me in Texas would not be honored in Louisiana. Is this still the case or have things changed?

The CDC is doing a "live" Q&A right now, and they said you should NOT cancel any sort of trip within the USA. If you are sick, then perhaps you should avoid air travel so you don't spread it to anyone else, but if you have trips planned you should go ahead and take them. Very reassuring coming from them.

I am so glad to hear this!! I really was in a panic!! We are going to take all precautions and then some.

As far as I know prescriptions can be filled across state lines in most states. Some states have restrictions for controlled substances. However, individual stores may have their own rules.

Shan, do you have a source link? The reason I am asking is there are no reports of them testing in Ga yet. I checked the CDC website and they don't have it up yet.

There is so many mixed reports and I am trying to find out if the different state confirmations VS CDC confirmations VS plain old TV rumor.

Just wanted to let everyone know--if you are still planning on coming down, stock up on your supplies before you leave home. Our local drugstores (10 miles from WDW) are entirely out of masks and Purell. A few small bottles of store brand sanitizer. We were in Walgreens picking up a prescription, and from what we heard supplies are out all over the area. The Walgreens was slammed too. No idea what the prescriptions were, but the pharmacy line was wrapped around the store and they were backed up by over two hours.

Is the general consensious that this will not affect crowds or airfare? I was kinda selfishly hoping people would stay away in fear of the swine flu

My guess is that people will come to WDW in droves. It's ridiculous to think people will sit at home and stare the TV for a week.

They did say this, and now that the states are equipped to test for H1N1 they no longer have to send the sample to the CDC. This will allow states to more rapidly diagnose cases of regular flu versus swine flu. It will also create a jump in the numbers, but that jump shouldn't concern anyone it's just a sign that the tests are doing their job!

On the CDC webcast, Bessiner just said that this swine flu strain is NOT the same as the 1918 strain! Yeah!

Also stated how important is to WASH YOUR HANDS!!

They are not advising travel restrictions either.

I just hate this whole thing. Some health officials are calm level headed and some make you think you should hole up in your house. It's so fustrating. I just watched the Health Official Dr for Orange County on WFTV and he was downright SCARY. Up until now I wasn't thinking about cancelling my trip (I leave Sunday) but after watching the Orange county guy it's really crossing my mind. I can't even believe I just typed that.

And these two quotes are why containment and social distancing methods don't work. Sadly, you're probably right. Our go-go-go society can't fathom simply staying home for a week. And god forbid government health officials should dare consider interfering with our inalienable rights to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and the spread of swine flu.

I don't particularly relish the thought of sitting in my house either, but it's hardly imprisonment.

well that is good to know. I was thinking about those times the bus is standing room only, or the crowd in the haunted mansion is merging down to a single line, or people are cueing at toy story mania in the morning, or sitting on the floor in playhouse disney, or sitting in stitch, or the crowd cueing at opening outside the train station, etc. It is so good to know that you can't catch the flu by breathing what someone sneezes in those sorts of typical disney situations. Yes you can catch it by breathing in what someone sneezes. Flu is considered airborne. We have airborne precautions when caring for patients with influenza. Droplets are vey light, so they remain in the air longer. Some viruses are droplet precautions--- you have to be much closer because the droplets actually fall, unfortunately flu is airborne which is why we wear masks as opposed to gown and gloves.

We're leaving next Friday, I wasnt too concerned, now I must admit I'm a little nervous. My hubby is going to Costco for Lysol, hand sanitizer and baby wipes. I'll probably pack our own pillows and blankets now. We have a weekend booked for Mother's Day at CSR...I'm sure we're going to go-we're just taking alot of precautions. If by like Wednesday it gets super serious we can always cancel, but I think it will be fine. If not, more time off form work with illness, right?

You know what really bothers me...The media seems like all they are focused on is how much its spreading..yeah well we all know that? Can't they ease the fear of Americans a little and start focusing on the TREATMENT for this flu. It would make me feel a lot better knowing even though this flu is going around, that there is still some kind of postive end; rather than just saying 'its getting worse'

Please remember, the seasonal flu is just as dangerous. Anytime someone has th there anything about that flu te flu, it shouldn't be overlooked. By all means, they need to stay home and out of public. What is of concern with this flu, is that it is a "new" flu that we wouldn't have built up immunity to it yet. But the seasonal flu is a "deadly" flu just like this one is.

Yes, seasonal flus can be deadly, especially for the very old and the very young, or those with compromised immune symptoms.
do you know much about the spanish flu in 1918? was there anything different about that flu and seasonal flus, in terms of the fatalities? Does this swine flu seem to share any similarities with that flu, at least in the first few days of what we know from Mexico?

In other words, are the fatalities mostly the very young or old, as in typical seasonal flus, or has it been more people 20-40 like the spanish flu?

Is that it is a "new flu" really the only issue of concern here?

Sorry, I don't mean to snipe at anyone here. But if I wanted to hole myself up in the house in order to avoid some calamity (social or personal), swine flu would be #7965 on the list. I'm sure I'm in more danger of being harmed by some twit on cell phone while driving than I am of contracting swine flu.
