Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

All of these types of posts, which seem to be the majority here, are exactly why I am at home right now! While your immune system is healthy and able to fight off the flu easily, the immune suppressed people are at your careless mercy when you go around spreading your "mild flu" germs.

Ok, I guess this is all a farce! Go to WDW! Let us know how it goes!

Why even ask for the Tamiflu at all? I have a better chance of dying from a twit on cell phone! Nevermind that common sense (much less every gov't official) says it's a big deal.

My community is in the middle of a major outbreak due to the selfish approach like this! Yes, we're better able to handle any virus these days, medicine has come a long way. And we have respirators. But people, don't ignore the health warnings and go about your life business as usual. Your going to spread this further and then those of us with June trips won't be able to go either because we'll all still be spreading it around! They're trying to stop the spread! Let's all help out here, if only for those that could be seriously harmed by a "mild flu".

Sorry! My perspective is a little different here. We have 140 cases in my small community!
I'm at home and not ashamed to say it! Gasp, I'm actually following the directive of our health officials and trying to stay healthy.
:sad1:

I understand where you're coming from due to what's going on in your community. But the person you responded to did not say they were sick, they just said they weren't going to lock themselves indoors. You talk about the government officials, well the CDC just told people that if you are healthy you should not be afraid to go on airplanes, or anything, that you should take the trips you have planned.

They did say if you are sick you should reschedule. But you cannot expect the healthy people to stay indoors also, or to cancel their trips, especially if the CDC is telling them that they are not in danger.

Do you realize you are contagious 2 days before you show symptoms?

I never said it was "mild" (not sure why you put that in quotes as you directed your response at me).:confused3 What I was trying to get at is that we face many more imminent dangers on a daily basis, and that to cower in fear is pointless. I'm sorry to hear about the outbreak in your community. Hopefully everyone will be all better soon.

Do you realize you are contagious 2 days before you show symptoms?

I have not seen anyone at the CDC give out this information. Yet I did hear them not more than 1 hour ago tell people that if you are healthy there is no reason to shutter yourself inside and to go about taking your trips as normal.

Sorry, the "mild flu" is a carryover from an earlier poster who called it merely a "mild flu". Actually several posters referred to it that way. I don't mean to single you out it's just the general consensus here.

Sorry, just venting and trying to express a more intimate side of the story.

:goodvibes

I don't think any community has 130 cases.
There are only 109 in the entire US right now, per the CDC.
We have 26 in Texas, with the only death of a toddler from Mexico
who was in Texas visiting relatives.
For a little bit of perspective, there are 12,000 deaths annually from the
"normal flue."

The guidance we're getting is to wash your hands frequently, and not
touch your nose, mouth, or eyes with your hands. I think that's what the mask is for, to keep you from touching your nose or mouth, rather than blocking airborne germs.

Do you think one of those human bubbles will fit in the splash mountain ride cue?

Just curious...planning my trip ahead!

I've probably been one of those who called it mild, but only because that is the same language that the health officials are using. Someone just posted a link a few posts back that showed some of the scientists who are looking into this, and they referred to it as mild.

No problem. :goodvibes It sounds like this whole deal is hitting pretty close to home for you.

FTR, I (and family) am currently healthy. We'll use hand sanitizer, and will adjust plans/actions accordingly should someoen become sick. Trust me... I have been on a WDW vacation when everyone in the family except me was sick with the flu while smushed up in a room at POR. That is no party, and I don't want to experience it again.

CDC Website:
How can someone with the flu infect someone else?
Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/swineflu_you.htm

So, do the math here: you don't know you are sick while you're contagious and the CDC says go out about your business and travel as usual unless you show symptoms. See a problem here?

Guys: they CAN'T tell you not to fly or go to WDW. They WON'T do that! Do you know what that would do to an already destabilized economy????

Use your brain. Don't believe everything you hear. Common sense says going about your business as usual with confirmed cases in your town is the WRONG thing to do!

My town may go down in history as overreacting, and yeah I was VERY mad when they cancelled school til May 12th. But now that everyone is falling ill, I'm ok with keeping myself safe and making my OWN decisions taking all the facts into consideration. The government lying to it's people? Huh-that's a novel idea. They CAN'T create a nationwide panic! That would be irresponsible!

I wondered that same thing?

Does anyone know? I know this thread is moving fast.

They are not the WDW kids. The results on the WDW kids aren't in yet. The confirmed S.C. cases are 10 kids from S.C. that returned from a trip to Mexico.

Not exactly...

"Michigan's first case of the H1N1 virus was confirmed Wednesday. A 34-year-old woman in Livingston County who returned last week from a vacation in Texas was recovering at home from the H1N1 virus. Livingston County is 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

Health officials said the woman was at a San Antonio petting zoo, and her family traveled to and from Texas by car."

No visit to Mexico involved...

Im from Scotland so only going by what is being reported in the media here, so my apologies. Although in that case she was at a petting zoo which im assuming will have pigs, in a city which is close to mexico.

Theres been 9 people tested at the local hospital so its not as if im being ignorant about this as im on the other side of the world and think its not going to affect me.

I just dont see any reason for there to be mass panic or consideration to cancel holidays etc, and feel the media has done a terrible job on covering this in the UK.

This is WRONG! Old Information.

The stats you are using are several days old. It takes several days for the CDC to document in a lab. But they have given guidelines to the communities to define their own cases now.

Flu threat rises; 100 new cases

By Ashlie McEachern
The Herald-Zeitung
Published April 30, 2009

In less than 24 hours, a 100 more cases of suspected swine flu were detected in Comal County. Comal County Health Authority Dorothy Overman said Wednesday the majority of flu cases were in students and the decision to close schools as well as “social distancing” could prevent the further spread of influenza.

Dr. Overman said the surge in cases puts the count (as of Wednesday morning) at 140 suspected cases in the county. Dr. Overman released the new figures at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Three of the cases of undetermined flu have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and will take several days to diagnose.

The other 137 cases have been sent to regional health authorities where a viral culture will be done to determine the type and whether these cultures should be forwarded to the CDC for further testing.

“There have been no hospitalizations due to swine flu, but I expect swine flu cases to rise in Comal County,” Dr. Overman said. “It is rare to see this rapid rise of flu so late in the season and I am concerned. We are worried about the possibility of deaths. We advise anyone with an illness to stay home seven days past the last day of illness and for people to avoid mass gatherings. Anyone that has symptoms should call their physician.”

Comal County Judge Danny Scheel said that the county and city were taking all necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of the public.

“I am asking that parents monitor their children while the schools are out and keep them at home,” Scheel said. “It is very important for people to avoid public gatherings and to stay at home if possible.”

There actually is a county in Texas that is reporting 140 people sick. They are not all CDC confirmed and some won't be...

Grace, can you repost that link?

Also...Grace...I think you have "background" information that is simply not been released to the public. The CDC won't be saying that people don't need to travel until they decide that people REALLY don't need to travel.

In your community, I certainly would not travel. Hopefully, in your area, they are adhering to your local guidelines. I think the CDC is simply speaking for the US as a whole.

The government lying to it's people? Huh-that's a novel idea. They CAN'T create a nationwide panic! That would be irresponsible!

Irresponsible? If they thought that having people go about their business would infect the entire nation, wouldn't that also be irresponsible? I would say so, but given the facts they have, they don't see that happening.

I live in a state where there are no confirmed cases, I have not been to Mexico, nor been anywhere near anyone who has been to Mexico, and I am healthy, so I see no reason why I shouldn't go on my vacation, be it by plane, train, or automobile.

I'm only taking exception to the fact that you were accusing someone of spreading their "mild flu" germs when you don't know everyone's situation. Just as we don't know everything going on in your community and your situation, you don't know about ours.

Any way we can drop the joke (I hope) about hoping others stay home so crowds are low? Some people here may have to make a hard decision and upset some really dissappointed kids.

Maybe I should thank all those who do end up going? If this really is a pandemic - I guess someone has to get really sick. That would be classless though.

I totally agree with everything you have said. As someone with a nursing background, this is much more dangerous than the public is being led to believe. The govt is trying to suppress widespread panic, but I believe that in the next 2 weeks this thing is going to BE PANDEMIC, we are going to have multiple deaths and unlike the normal flu, it won't be the old and infirmed, it will be virile 20-40 yr olds. I personally will be canceling my WDW trip for July next month if it pans out like I believe it will. The directives given for health care professionals is reason enough for me to be concerned.

I agree with your right to go on vacation, but the truth is you are taking the chance of bringing it back to your community. Now you may be healthy, and not worried about it but what about the others around you. I dont mean to argue, I really have a hard time knowing what is the right thing about this. But is it responsible for us who dont have it to travel where we know it is and take the chance of bringing it back home. I know I will get flamed for this but I think it is a legimate question.
