Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

We just had 2 new cases reported yesterday at different public schools here; which have prompted a shut down of both schools for the next week. (There are 3 cases in our state, the first being a fully recovered college student) This thing seems to be really hit and miss.

Earlier in the week, one of our local radio personalities suggested we call it the flying pig flu because of it's components. With all the hype it's getting, that sounds like a great name. ;)

Like everything else, use your best judgement. Stay informed; using reliable sources, wash up, cover your cough, stay home if you're really ill(temp of 100 or greater,) treat your symptoms and stay hydrated. If you have additional risk factors that make it more dangerous for you to become ill, limit your exposure if possible.

IMO questioning the "status quo" or government, media, medical establishment does not make you "paraniod". It shows you do not just take for fact everything that you read, hear, etc. but make an independent decision based on all factors. I respect everyone's right to their own opinions without casting judgment on them.

There will come a time when everyone will need to "buck the system" at some point or another, and that is a good thing, that's the principle our Constitution is based on. I've heard of people unwilling to want to have biometric scans of their fingerprints at Disney and I don't necessarily think that's a "bad" opinion-germs, not to mention possible storing of information are things we should all be concerned about.

I know this is bordering on politics-as banned by our Mods-but I respect those who have the courage to stand up against what they feel is wrong!
And everyone deserves to have their own opinions.

:goodvibes
I agree, it's a good thing when people think for themselves..I was meaning the real extremists and there are quite a few of them out there..It's one thing if people take the info, think about it and form an opinion..it's another when they won't listen at all and just turn a deaf ear. Especially when it comes to possibly infecting other people(ie not complying with quarantines, vaccinating their kids etc).

But, no worries. I'm aware that it takes all types..just making an observation. I was wondering how on earth such types can manage to even have fun at WDW, if they see Big Brother around every corner.

Flying pig flu sounds like a good idea!! :)

:rotfl2:

Seems like the flu is not flying very fast, though! :)

I don't mean to make light of this, you guys know I have vacillated back and forth over the past few days with the craziness in my city. BUT I am starting to think this is the greatest thing for my June trip. Sure, all of us die-hards are gonna be in the parks but the normal everyday WDW tourist is probably going to cancel and stay away!

Woo-Hoo, I'm looking for the crowd calendars to go down, surely it will affect crowd level!

Stay safe and healthy everyone cause I'm really thinking we're gonna be coming to WDW! :cool1:

I don't know if the normal everyday tourist is freaking out though, probably because they haven't been reading this thread! :lmao:

Seriously, I was out today running errands...total calm out there in the real world. I mentioned to a couple people that I was leaving for Disney tomorrow and NO ONE gasped or looked shocked or asked if I was bringing a mask or anything!

I know a couple people that are going within the next couple months that have no idea what the DIS is and not one has asked me anything about going and the flu. They ask me lots of other things, but not about that. :confused3

So I don't know how many everyday tourists will cancel or even thought about it, but if you want I can direct the ones that are going in June over here for you! :teeth:

They see their job as to scare you-assuming if you are scared, you'll watch. And mostly (judging from what I've seen so far) they are right.
And if this thing does fizzle, they will all quickly absolve themselves, with a straight face telling us how they were only looking out for our well being.
And then go on with whatever hype comes next--.

And on the other hand, if they said nothing, and something drastic did happen, they would be blamed for not "letting the public know" Damned if you do, damned if you don't sort of a situation, I guess..........

PS: I am by no means defending the media, just making a statement of fact.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: I love the mask!!!!!!
But where are the rubber gloves? Are they only offered in the premium package?

I'm a teacher for a public school in Central Florida. We are having to buy enough hand sanitizer for my kids and my husbands kids to use (235 total). Why aren't the schools being responsible and using preventative measures? I know there are budget cuts, but putting the financial burden for this on any teacher doesn't seem fair. I teach in a very low income area, so asking the kids to provide it is out of the question. Most can't afford pencils.
Thanks for letting me vent. I think I'm just cranky because DH has said no Disney until this clears up. I think I'm in withdrawl.:confused3

If what you are saying is true wouldn't it be better to get the current strain and be immune than to stay healthy (and indoors away from people and close down whole cities) and have greater odds of catching the adapted strain in the fall??

:confused3

That is my personal thoughts but I am not a DR. :rotfl2:

The swine flu in 1918 followed the same track... it hit lightly in the spring and then come fall BAM hit changed and became a killer. Of course the one in the 70's fizzled out. I WOULD think the immunity you would get from catching a light case would make you better off IF it does hit hard in the fall ~ but then again it could just fizzle out.

I forgot the rubber gloves, and I have some new ones right under the kitchen sink, thanks for the reminder.

I am thinking of attaching Mickey ICON Black Ears to the Mask.

Hugs, Phil

Ok! Now THIS makes no sense.

I am watching CNN and Dr. Gupta, who DAYS ago was talking to Patient zero without a mask, is now touring the CDC? Walking around the office and talking to people. :sad2: They did take his temp before he went in...but I thought this had an incubation period of 7 days? And that you can pass it before you show symptoms?

That does not seem wise. :confused3

Didn't you get the memo, CNN reporters are immune to germs and hurricanes :rotfl2:

Man, that is AWESOME. I would so buy that pack from Amazon (I remember how excited I was to put together our earthquake kit ;)).

In related news, tried to buy some hand sanitizer at Target today, and they were flat out. You should have seen us, we went to Rite Aid, found the absolute last bottle of Purell, and were high-fiving like idiots ;)

I've gotta do that painted mask thing though!

Maybe you could ask parents for donations. Those who can afford to, or have access to reduced-cost gel and wipes, might help you out.

I'm impressed that you managed to FIND enough hand sanitizer for 235 kids. We're not that far from you, and we got one of the last three or four bottles of store brand at Walgreen's (Not a bottle of Purell to be found). Several other stores were flat out of everything. I'd hoard the stuff like crazy if you're trying to supply that many people :scared1:
