Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

a great tip for flying and trying to reduce catching airborne germs is to lightlyu swab the inside of yoru nose w/ neosporin ointment

...except that the main antibacterial agent in Neosporin (neomycin) is toxic if it gets in your bloodstream, and applying to a mucous membrane (like inside your nose) where it can be more readily absorbed into your bloodstream is a bad idea.

Horrible advice IMO. Don't do it.

ok i have been at work...i see the little smilies but i have to check - disney closing may 1- 8 is a joke right????? i am a little paranoid at this point. :)

Thanks guys - I fell for this joke. I am skim reading this while cooking for 20 elderly people for tomorrow, so only read the words "WDW closed 1-8th May" and freaked out. I have re read last few pages of this - am I to assume that inside edition is not a reputable source (don't know as in England). I just freaked out and didn't notice the smilies!

Ok, all joking aside, is WDW closing at all. I am thinking no but I want to make sure before I retire for the night

I listened to the public congressional hearing on this H1N1 flu (they don't want to call it swine anymore because it is upsetting the agricultural folks but I think it is too late now)

.

OMG, it's a hamdemic!!

What if they change the name to bacon fever?

Just trying to lighten the situation a bit.

WDW is NOT closing. In fact...if you read the flu thread on the cruise board, it sounds like the Disney Cruise Line is even still visiting Mexico? :confused3

I havent read all 20 something pages and this may have already been posted, but they said on the news that there was a confirmed case of Swine Flu at WDW. I'm going to be there in 18 days! :scared1: I have to keep my DH away from the tv or he won't go!!

Here's hope they get this under control before my vacation - 'cause everyone knows its all about me,right?!?!?!

I am sure that's going to change... pressure from world leaders will make them change plans.
Nothing is open in Mexico at this point ~ just about everything is shut down .... if course this is a GOOD thing in the hopes that it stops spreading so quickly.

Carnival, RC, and Princess have all canceled stops. Disney will be next I am sure.
they are already *asking* for people not to go to Mexico on unessential travel.

I'm sorry, where did you get this information?

If it is so dangerous, then why is it used to put on cuts, and scrapes, and other "open" sores to prevent infection? Seems like that would be direct entry into the bloodstream there. I'm not a doctor or nurse or anything. It just seems common sense would dictate that if it we toxic like that, it wouldn't be used on broken skin.

I have been wondering how DCL was going to get away with that.

I am sure DCL considers that travel "essential" to their business...but, come on. It is pretty clear that we should avoid Mexico right now.

Feel free to look up neomycin somewhere on the web. There's a reason why neomycin is no longer used in IV form.

Cuts and scrapes on skin are only small portals into the bloodstream. Additionally, there is a hydrostatic component (pressure) that plays a small role in keeping blood levels of neomycin low from small wounds. But we're talking about mucous membranes, such as what's in your nose or under your tongue, which is quite different - absorption can happen much more readily in these areas. Furthermore, surgeons no longer slather Neosporin over large open wounds or intra-abdominally for just this reason.

But hey, do whatever you want. Your common sense prevails, right?

I have heard of dr's telling people to use it for cuts and sores in the nose when they have had a cold. I don't think it is dangerous, especially if you use a small amount as recommended.

Well for all of those who are not concerned and for those who think some are blowing it out of proportion ~

NYC stated they have more cases at this point then they can test for. There are 100's of people with it in NYC at this point... 3 schools are currently closed.
Once THAT many get out there is no stopping it now ~ its going to spread to all parts of the country. I few pockets of 4 or 5 here and there had a chance but with 100's in NYC?

CDC aint'e got a chance of stopping it now. Luckily its NOT as serious of an illness as it could be! It could be the plague :scared1:

Keep washing those hands ~ remind your kids to wash their hands ~ lysol the house once or twice a day and hopefully it will pass by your house ...

Ooooooo, the pork people r gonna sue you just like those cow folks sued Oprah years ago...:rotfl: Then they're gonna send pork stuffs to your house by the truckload....:rotfl2:

Oh crud, Lou Dobbs just said some sick people got off a plane at BWI and have been quarrantined. :sad2:Please don't close my airport. I wanna go home tomorrow...:rolleyes1

I'll be honest.. just got back yesterday from Disney and I have some sort of flu now. They're sending the tests down to Walter Reed in DC and I'll know in a couple of days whether or not its Swine Flu. Until then, I'm not supposed to go anywhere. I dunno what I'm gonna need to do if it is.. contact my airline and Disney to let them know?

Sorry, I don't believe this one bit. Neosporin is an antibacterial, while colds are caused by viruses - so Neosporin doesn't do anything whatsoever to help treat or prevent colds. Same thing goes with swine flu - it's a virus. If any doctor is giving this kind of poor advice to people, he/she needs to be reviewed and/or sanctioned.

Like I said in my previous post, do whatever you like. Most people will anyway, regardless of ignorance.

Oh, that totally stinks. I am so sorry!!

I would just stay put. The authorities will spread the word to all of those folks if it does turn out to be the swine flu.

Do you just feel horrible? Or are you sorta doubting it really is the new flu?

**wait...was this your honeymoon? :(

I did not say it was used to treat or prevent colds but to help with sores/cuts from nose blowing, etc.

Neomycin is mainly used topically in the treatment of skin and mucous membrane infections, wounds, and burns. (found this searching about neomycin on the web - used on skin and mucous membranes)
