my flight is only a couple of weeks away...is it even worth it now to book this for our return? (3 weeks away)
or is it only a good option when booked right away? I am worried I'll forget to check in at 24 hours for the return.....

If you are worried about checking in at the 24 hour mark, go ahead and buy EBCI. I actually did the same thing. My flight leaves Sunday, and I bought ECBI for my return flight on December 1 a couple of weeks ago. I wanted my last day on vacation to be stress free - allowing me to go where I want and not worry about checking in at the 24 hour mark. I decided the extra $10 was worth it to me to enjoy my vacation. Have a great trip!!
