Family is gone out, door bell rings while I'm in the bathroom.. I'm thinking it might be a delivery of some sort since I did all of my shopping online and at this time of year the various delivery companies are working all sorts of days and hours..

I come out of the bathroom, open the inside door, and there's a business size envelope stuck inside the storm door hand addressed to: "The Ladies and Little Lady Of The House" - unsealed.. I open it up and it's a very nicely decorated, computer-generated tri-fold invitation..

On the front page it reads: "Our Fourth Annual Neighborhood Christmas Cookie Exchange" (we've lived here 3 years now) and there's a pretty photo of a plate of Christmas cookies..

Inside it reads:

"Please bring 4 dozen homemade cookies to exchange.

Date - time - and place.. (From the house # it sounds like it's a decent distance down the street - a direction we never have to travel in order to exit the neighborhood..)

"Enjoy refreshments, music, and time with your neighbors and friends."

"RSVP ____________ or ___________ at (phone#)"

----------------------------

These are not people that any of us know.. This is a very nice neighborhood though - very nice homes - and all of the people we "have" met are very nice, polite, clean appearance, well-behaved children, etc..

So - "if" this was something we were interested in - when they say "4 dozen homemade cookies", they mean a dozen of each of 4 kinds - right? Not 4 dozen assorted cookies?

Although the scheduled Christmas cookie baking day here isn't until the day after this event, I could easily whip up 4 dozen cookies the "day of" -if anyone was interested in attending..

Which brings me to the next question.. I have read over and over on the DIS how many posters here won't eat homemade goodies from people they don't know personally, haven't seen the insides of their homes, etc..

If this invitation had come to your home - from the neighborhood - would you even consider it?

And can we please try to keep the responses on this topic? Thanks! :santa:

If I'm understanding your question correctly...they want you to bring 4 dozen of the same cookies. If your specialty is chocolate chip (for example) you should bring 4 dozen of that kind.

The idea is that you will all exchange a half dozen or so and end up with a variety of cookies to bring home with you.

I'm not one of those that worries about eating what others have made. Mostly I don't participate in cookie exchanges because I like MY cookies best! :rotfl:

I'd also assume it was asking you to bring 4 dozen of the same type of cookie. I'd go and not worry about the cookies that other people have brought and what condition their homes were in, etc.; I just don't sweat stuff like that. :)

If I got an invitation in my neighborhood, I'd totally go, and I only know a few people on my street. I like meeting new people and eating new goodies. As long as I knew everyone was from the neighborhood (even if I didn't personally know them), I wouldn't be worried about the cookies at all. :goodvibes

I'm not sure, but I think it probably means 1 dozen each of 4 kinds of cookies, or maybe even 4 dozen of one kind of cookie?

We cookie swap with a group I belong to, and yes it is 4 dozen of the same kind. That way if you swap with 7 other people, everyone has 8 different kind of cookies. We did have to ask people to please make "christmas like" cookies, one year there were to many chocolate chip, and peanut butter Kiss'. If they invited you to the swap, I assume they would eat your cookies. If you don't think your family will eat "stranger made" cookies, don't go.

As PPs have mentioned, they want you to bring 4 dozen of 1 kind of cookie. That will be split up among many people and you will come home with a wide variety of other people's cookies.

I don't worry so much about other people's cooking. I figure people have been exchanging baked goods for years and the overwhelming result is gaining a few pounds as opposed to e coli or something. I'd go and enjoy!

I would take it as 4doz cookies of 1 kind. I am one that feels funny eating other peoples stuff. But they did specify "homemade", so I guess thats what you should do if you participate.

Yikes! I'm glad I asked.. All I was coming up with was a dozen each of 4 different "kinds" of cookies - or 4 dozen "assorted" cookies..

Years ago - when my kids were little - we had a decent size group of housewives who would gather for coffee each morning at rotating houses after the kids were on the school bus.. At Christmas we would do a very laid back (ie: unorganized - LOL) cookie exchange - but everyone would just bring a bunch of their specialties (no numerical requirements) and everyone managed to go home with a nice, even assortment..

I've never been a part of an "organized" cookie exchange, so that's why I needed to ask..:santa:

So the general concensus is 4 dozen of the "same" Christmas cookie - right?

I would agree, 4 dozen of 1 kind of cookie. What will likely happen is that they will figure out how many of each person's 4 dozen cookies each participate can have. If they have 20 people show up, each person can take 2 cookies from each batch. Then some left over for tasting while you are there.

Sounds like fun. I would participate, and also take along copies of your recipe...

Whatcha gonna make?:goodvibes

I have done this several times. It is four dozen of the same kind. Have fun!!

Yes, I agree with everyone else. 4 dozen of the same type of cookie!

I'm actually hosting a cookie exchange in a few weeks and everyone is bringing one type of cookie to exchange.

Have fun!

I'm not sure what I'll make if we participate.. That was going to be my next question.. I make these really delicious spritz butter cookies (that include dry Jello mix - choice of flavor) with my electric cookie shooter that everyone absolutely loves and requests every single year..

The only problem is - they're extremely yummy, extremely pretty (look like they came out of a bakery) - BUT the size of them are between the size of a quarter and a half dollar.. Would they be too small? If that's what I made, should I make twice as much so each person could take more? :confused3

I'm positive they would be a big hit - they're quick and easy for making 4 dozen at a time - but I'm a little worried about their "size"..

Whatcha all think?

I'll send you my address and you can skip the exchange and just send me 4 dozen of those!! I love those things and can't make them.

I would think that 4 dozen is enough, but if you feel adventurous and want to make 8 dozen, I'm sure no one will mind.;)

I know most of my neighbors-so yes.

But if it was from someone I didn'tknow-probably not.

And with all the flu going around-getting food from dozens of strangers -no way would I eat it -nowadays

Definitely 4 dozen of the same type. I would probably go. I've gone to a couple and they've been fun! We always also brought copies of the recipe to share.

But what about the size of these particular cookies? Do you think I should go with something larger? :confused3

What sizes have you all seen at cookie exchanges?

This is exactly what they want you to do. A friend of mine is having a cookie exchange as well. It seems to be the popular thing to do this year.

Anything you choose to take will be fine.

Yes-you should do a larger cookie
A cookie the size of a quarter is too small for a Cookie Exchange, IMO
