Any suggestions? A couple of the kids want to go to Mass on Sunday. I could take them over to the Shrine, but wondered if there was another Catholic Church that might be easier/closer?

The Shrine is the closest Catholic services but I am sure there are others as the one listed above.

Not necessarily true. We always go to the one in Celebration, and it's not only a nice new Church, but also isn't the commercial Church that the Shrine is. I HATE going to the shrine. It always makes me think of the "money exchangers in the temple" story!

It's CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC CHURCH
1050 Celebration Ave.
Celebration, FL.

Here is a link to Corpus Christi directions. It is about 7 or 8 miles away.

Diane, I also dislike the commercial nature of the Shrine church. I know that they are not a parish church, so they have to count on tourists for their funds, but it still feels rather heavy handed. I liked Father Harte and I like the new rector, Father McCarthy, but there are a couple of other priests (one in particular) whose homilies make me cringe.

I'm glad to hear you like the church in Celebration. We drove by it on our last trip and will attend Mass there next trip. It looks like a lovely little church.

One of the priests there is the one who used to do the Masses at the Poly years ago.

Thanks, everyone. We just might try the Celebration Church.

I was thinking of the mass celebrated at the Poly. Did they discontinue that? Are there no longer masses on property?

Mass was discontinued at the Polynesian when the Shrine was built.

I agree with many posters here ... Corpus Christi in Celebration is a great church to attend. We have also attended Holy Family (which we prefer over all of them) but they are about 30 minutes away. Corpus Christi is right down World Drive.

There aren't any regular Sunday masses anymore. There is usually one for Christmas in the Contemporary Convention center.

I may try the church in Celebration in June. At one time we thought we would be moving to Florida, so we most often went to Holy Family, because it was a parish that I thought we would be joining. Moving to Orlando is no longer an option, so we may as well try a different parish.

As a local central Floridian, I do encourage you to stick with the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe. Yes, I get that sometimes you don't like hearing the explanation that they don't receive any funds from the diocese, it is the truth and if you don't feel that you want to contribute in the collection, that is your choice. But the bottom line is that the shrine was built specifically to support the tourists visiting our area.

Of course, if you really want to visit one of our local parishes, you are certainly welcome but please try to take advantage of the ministry that was created specifically for you.

I would have been happy with a simpler style. They keep embellishing the church. I would rather they use the money in other ways. I have and do contribute, when I go, but I am not comfortable with "Rah, Rah....Who's from New Jersey, Yeah!" style of raising money in Church.

I absolutely agree with that, Bobbi. I always felt like anything I donated was being spent on a big showy building instead of real ministry. I muc prefer going to a "real" parish Mass.

Make that four.

There is no way we'll ever go to that Shrine again. They never should have built it. It's not that it's very convenient to attend. One must take a taxi to it and timewise it takes the same amount time to travel to Celebration.

If I'm going to spend nearly $80 in transportation costs to get my family (large family where a regular taxi does not work) to mass it's going to be some place that is spiritually enriching. The Shrine is anything but that. It's an embarrassment to our faith!

I'm agreeing with you there. Even if you have a car and drive, it is not an easy place to get in and out of. We made the mistake of going there for a Holy Day once. Never again. There was nothing "holy" about it, but there was a lot commercial about it. We go to Celebration.
