Suitable for vegetarians?

Hi people, I'm new here on the DISboards, going to DLP (and dragging my poor boyfriend along, I pity him already :rolleyes1) at the beginning of August '09.

As a vegetarian, I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with the veggie meals in the parks / Disney Village / Disney Hotels? I've researched the DLP Food Guide, the Brit Guide and this forum, but it seems that my options are

a. 3-cheese salad
b. 3-cheese pizza
c. plain pasta (as in Blue Lagoon; 19.90 euros for a plain pasta and no drink is a lot of money, I think. I'm Dutch, so I'm cheap, but still... don't you agree?)
d. The Green Piece (?) Burger at Annette's Diner (expensive, but apparently, good)

I'm not fussy, I'll eat any of the above (or McDonald's) for 4 nights in a row, no problem. But since I'm paying the big bucks for them meals (and drinks!), I was wondering: do you have any tips on where to get good vegetarian food?

Me and the BF will probably go for the buffet service restaurants mostly, so if you have tips on the La Cantina (Santa Fe Hotel - we're staying here), Chuck Wagon (Cheyenne Hotel), Plaza Gardens Restaurant (DLP) or Restaurant Des Stars (WDS, is it open for dinner at all?), or ANYTHING, please let me know!! Thanks in advance.

ps. Call me stupid, but could anyone tell me what the abbreviations "SDD" and "OT" mean? I've been wondering while reading the forum!

Hi and welcome

The best restaurant for vegetarian food is Agrabah cafe in Adventureland - look at some of the recent reviews and pics.

All restaurants and buffets will have a veg option but it is often pasta

OT stands for off topic (if something is not DLP related or related to the original thread topic)

SDD stands for single digit dance - when you reach the 9 days til you go mark

Hello Suzzanne

My husband is also a vegetarian and we have been to DLP twice this year.
I too checked the reviews and found the Agrabah Cafe was pretty decent for veggies. We went thre in May and my husband was ok, but unfortunatley, I did not enjoy it at all which is quite unusual because I dont consider myself a fussy eater (beware of the sauces there- they are very very spicy!)

However, my husband absolutley loved Walts and actually said it was very possibly the best vegetarian meal he had ever eaten! I thought Walts was excellent too. We were there once in April and twice in May and every time was delicious.

We also both enjoyed Rendevous Des Stars and hubby had no trouble there either, again we've been twice now. Plaza gardens was ok (Pizza etc)
Cafe Mickey was also worth a visit and again hubby had no problems.

One place I would say to avoid is The Lucky Nugget Saloon. We have now been twice and should have learned our lesson from our first visit in April, it was awful, overpriced with poor quality cold food and there was very little for vegetarians to make a decent meal from their buffet. We thought we would try again in May but had exactly the same problem, so much so we complained and were given a full refund for BOTH visits!

We stayed in NBC and DLH and found no problem with breakfast- it was excellent.

Dont worry, DLP caters for vegetarians very well we found in comparison to other places.

Have a great time!

Calumsmummy -

May I ask what your husband chose from Walt's? I'm also a vegetarian and plan to go there.

Of course

It was the goats cheese salad to start ( I had that too and it was delicious)
Main course was The Ravioli in a sauce on a bed of vegetables (he still raves about that dish yet!)
Dessert was cheesecake and again it was yummy :)

Hope you enjoy your meal
:)

I just returned from my first DLP trip on Sunday and am a vegetarian.

The food choices were limited, that's for sure. I had nothing but counter service. I had a petite salade and the pain a l'ail for about 4 meals. But I will say, the salad was really good, fresh lettuce and a nice balsamic dressing.

I also had the vegetarian plate at the Cowboy Cookout, which I really do not recommend. It was basically hash browns like from McDonalds, some fried sticks with minimal veggies, and flavorless rice.

The best thing I had all week was the grilled vegetable sandwich at the Main St. Bakery. It was delicious!:thumbsup2

Thank you all for your response, this will definitely help in picking the restaurants! I wasn't sure if the Agrabah Cafe was open again, so good to hear that it is - and that it should be my cup of tea. Hearing from "real people" always gives more insight than reading a menu on a website (or reading the DLRP site, which hardly gives any info at all!). So, thanks again

--18 days before we're off, can't wait!:)--

Hi Suzanne, I am a newbie too! I hav been to DLRP loads and it can be a pain being a veggie. A few years ago Casey's on main street used to do veggie hot dogs and nuggets and I'm gutted now they have stopped. For an inexpensive dinner tho, Colonel Hathi's Pizza Outpost in Adventureland is good for pizza, pasta & garlic bread! I am going with my hubbie and 13 year old daughter for the 2nd time this year at the end of Aug, also at Santa Fe, cant wait!!!! :yay: Debs

We found that compared to 10 years ago DLP was much better this time for Veg meals. HOWEVER, we did eat in proper restaurants rather than takeaway/fast food. My hubby is not a cheese salad type vegetarian, he hates that! He said he just didnt want to eat bread and rabbit food and cheese pizza is ok maybe once or twice but it has to be a nice cheese pizza and from what we saw in the fast food/takeaways their vege choices did not appeal to him

I have always said that he is a fussy so and so :) but even he was surprised at the good quality of food suitable for him in some of the restaurants, in particular Walts, Agrabah, Auberge and Rendevous Des Stars. Yes, the choice was limited but thats always the case wherever we go anyway and of no surprise.

Well, I feel I'm going well prepared now, as food's concerned (the attractions I'll figure out for myself, :thumbsup2 ).

@amacspad: I read somewhere (DLPfoodguide maybe) that Casey's was good for vegetarians, which surprised me, it being a hot dog place... but now I get it - shame they don't have the veggie hot dog now; the BF is a meat lover, so it would have made a nice combination for us  . The place needs no checking out for me now, thank you for the info.

I did gather from all your comments that I'd best spend quite some money on food, though! Not the cheapest places, Walt's and such (although 23 euros for the Agrabah buffet is OK) !
