submersible missing near the Titanic

I do have a lot of respect for explorers. Going into an experimental watercraft and risking your life helps technology along. Whatever the outcome, I expect others will learn from it and improve.

I guess I don't completely see the point of risking my life to see the titanic ruins. The 5 in the sub only get to see it on a monitor so why not create something unmanned and watch it on a monitor somewhere you don't risk your life? There's a million ways one can die, but implosion or oxygen deprivation at the bottom of the ocean in a tight metal can sounds pretty awful. I hope if they are alive and running out of oxygen they don't turn on each other down there.

There is (was?) a window in the submersible. And as a way to die, implosion actually wouldn't have been that awful. Yes it sounds very 'violent' to us, but in reality if the sub imploded their deaths would have been instantaneous with no pain or suffering. Oxygen deprivation/hypothermia, yes, now that would be miserable.

This is very true. I do hope they had no idea what happened to them.

Thinking of their loved ones at the moment. Such a traumatic loss.

TY. I guess that's a merciful way to go. I hope that brings comfort to their families.

Obviously if all news is biased we can't trust any of these sources either.
Unfortunately, that is basically true. Because our media system is so biased, we can only do a ton of research on any given topic, to get the truth... which is why ratings on news channels are dying, because people are realizing they are just talking out of their asses, so why bother wasting our time watching... but its mostly the 90% that are owned and run by shareholders, not 100% of all media. (but most will have their lean)

It is difficult to get just the facts on a situation with a national news source, because almost all of them are presented with some level of political bias. This is the method I use when trying to get to the truth on a topic in the news. Read a left slanted news article on the topic. Read a right slanted news article on the topic, then read a news article on the topic from somewhere else other than the US (Europe, Canada, or Asia mostly). The truth is somewhere in the middle of what is presented in those 3 sources. For example, during the pandemic the same exact data was presented drastically differently depending on the news source. It's just where we are currently in this country.

I know this offends people and journalist don't want to hear it, but this is just how I see things currently.

Very few local stations are owned by those 6, so they have little say in local news.
A story that's 18 years old is not a good indicator of the current situation. IMO, of course, YMMV.
Well, at least we're getting closer in time. But when they say things like: "90 percent of U.S. news media — the traditional outlets that employ full-time reporters — are controlled by six corporations. ", see my first point.

As for the other "big stories", what qualifies as a "big story" is in the eye of the beholder. And, news products are here to make money for their owner. As such, they need to "pander" to what their audience wants. Look at what @BrianL mentioned about Japanese coverage of the Earthquake... "incredibly dry". People will CLAIM all they want is the "facts", but they actually watch the "splash".

Yes…it’s not really considered to be a hard news channel, but neither is MSNBC…the “other side” of the news entertainment complex if you will. We Americans are on a “choose your news adventure “ path…and have been for some time. It’s just getting much, much worse…increasingly polarized.
The word “news” is nowhere in the name msnbc. It’s an opinion channel, and they’d tell you the same.

From the BBC:

Rear adm Mauger says this morning an ROV from the vessel Horizon Artic found the tail cone of the Titan submersible approximately 1600ft from the bow of the Titanic wreck.

And they found additional debris, which is consistent with a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber.

They immediately notified families.

It was not slick & polished like most things in Japan. The anchors stood to the side and let a scientist talk for a solid half-hour. He had flip charts and the hosts only ocassionally chimed in with a question. It was incredibly dry, straight-forward, and fact driven. It was also very eye-opening compared to what I am used to seeing here.

That could never happen here because the US seems to be somewhat lacking in science literacy these days, and no doubt a good number would cry 'bias' on letting the scientist speak. It sounds great though.

If the viewing window began to crack before an intense implosion, there could have been some time before totality. As far as organic contents, simply crushed. My belief is upon loss of contact, the implosion happened.
