Stupid question?

I know this is probably a stupid question - but, I was wondering if you could ask for a room upgrade when checking in to a DVC resort? My family and I are going to DW (first time) in May and I was fortunate enough to find about renting DVC's. We booked a studio because it was the cheapest. I thought I had read somewhere that you could ask for a free upgrade when checking in (like you do at any hotel), but I don't remember if that was for DVC's or not.

Upgrades on points are extraordinarily rare and only happen if rooms are taken out of service. You can always ask, but if you get an upgrade, you should have used the luck on lottery tickets.

Thanks for the reply. I guess it won't hurt to ask, but at least I know my chances are slim to none.

Free upgrades are uncommon at the non-DVC resorts, but upgrades at DVC resorts are about as rare as hen's teeth. The only way they're going to move you to a larger villa size is if there's a maintenance issue and they HAVE to, so the upgrade would likely be pre-assigned before you arrive. There's really not much point in asking.

If you want a larger villa, why not contact the member you rented from and see if there's still availability at your resort? They may be able to change the reservation.

Some have even been "upgraded" right out of the resrot! It's probably an extremely slim to none chance.

Some would say that by renting points you have already gotten an upgrade over any room that would have cost you the same through CRO.

Given the makeup of timeshares, I'd consider it inappropriate to ask for an upgrade on check in just for the sake of the upgrade. Now if one had a problem an upgrade request might be appropriate depending on the specifics but not just for the sake of asking.

And some "free" upgrades have really been upgrades with the necessary additional points deducted from the owner's account later. Not something renters should ever be doing.

I don't see why its inappropriate to ask. Its inappropriate for one to be GIVEN, but there shouldn't be anything rude or offensive in asking, if its done politely and if the inevitable no is taken in good spirits.

IMO it represents a lack of understanding of the realities of timeshare management and/or the an attempt to get more than one paid for. Therefore I feel it is inappropriate to ask simply for asking, you obviously feel differently and that's your option.

I agree, Dean. I would never ask that at a timeshare, but I might in a regular hotel.

I wouldn't ask either (since I think all it does is make the staff roll their eyes at one another - hey, I wouldn't ask for a different room than the one I've been assigned - everyone in a points based timeshare should get a "turn" at the dumpster view or a roll in shower), but a renter is unlikely to understand the realities of timeshare management, and I think its far more inappropriate for us or Disney to expect them to than it is for them to ask.

Yes, but most timeshares would operate the same way, so it is almost a given that you wouldn't ask.

It's funny...I have never even thought about asking for an upgrade.:flower3:

Certainly it would be one thing for one that didn't know and understand, but for those that are visitors to this site it wouldn't take more than a few days of reading to know better. The OP asked, now they know. If we had all danced around the subject, they might have gotten the idea it really was OK. To be honest, I really don't care if people ask nicely, the problem is not everyone asks nicely.

Before I knew anything at all about DVC, I mean anything at all, We rented. It was my birthday, We received the dreaded Dumpster view at VWL. I saw a one bedroom, right next door. We went to the front desk... asked if we could pay the difference to be upgraded to a one bedroom. There was availability, the CM told me there was. The manager would not even come out and talk with us. The CM told us the Manager was there, then had to come out and tell us the manager was not there. I hate being lied to. She really did not know what to do. I felt sorry for her. I am not one that causes a stink at the front desk. The more we thought about it, the more it bothered us. My husband really wanted to go back and talk with the manager. I talked him out of it. I thought, for Disney... we were being treated very rudely. After, we bought, and I learned about points, I realized how impossible, that would have been to have made that transaction.
So, for you that rent, there really is not a way for you to upgrade. There is not a way to be fair to the DVC owner. Now, I understand this, I wish the manager had come out and said, you are on a points stay, we can't upgrade point stays.

Apparently keys2kingdom thinks I am some sort of bum - trying to get everything for free. Believe me, this vacation is anything but FREE. I was asking legitemate questions that I thought would have been answered kindly and honestly. Some of you did, and I appreciate that. For those who thought it would be cool to be rude - don't worry, I'm done asking questions on this board.
