Stressed Neurotic Mom Warning

Just had to throw my 2 cents' worth in....
I got a raging case of chicken pox when I was about 30. That was the sickest 2 weeks of my entire life. I have never been more miserable. I still have noticeable scarring. My 3 year old daughter was thoroughly exposed to me and NEVER GOT THEM.......so weird.
Let us know how this all comes out.
I'll be in Disney when you are!

To the OP, I see lots of debate over to vax or not to vax, but I saw 0 flames for saying you'd probably still take the trip. I believe, unless the child is too sick to travel, that is fine. Most parents do not try to hide their children from chicken pox...they've either had 'em, had the vax, or the parent has tried exposing the child so they get them before they are older and it will cause more serious illness. I'd be shocked if an airline said you couldn't travel because of a rash (if it's a mild case and the child is otherwise fine).
My daughter was vaccinated as an infant, and I was skeptical and I guess I still am. If the vaccine only provides temporary immunity and just makes them susceptible to the pox when they are adults, then I think it's a bad thing. The honest truth is, we just do not know because the vaccine is in it's infancy. It was not available to my DS11 when he was an infant and was being touted as the "new thing" when my DD (almost 8) was born. My ex husband and my son were both exposed to Chicken Pox and never got them. I told the pediatrician that my son may be immune but a blood test revealed he was not, so they recommended the vaccine.
Good luck and pixie dust to you, have a great trip!

This is so weird that I found this thread tonight because I was thinking of starting one on the very same subject! I have never had chicken pox and I am 36 - and just haven't really gotten around to getting vaccinated (I know I should!). Now I'm having the pre-trip anxiety and worrying that I will get chicken pox before we leave in 3 weeks!!!! I guess I should go get the vaccine. My DD had the pox when she was a baby (pre-vaccine days) and my DS had the shot. I have had the blood test and I do NOT have an immunity. So being the paranoid person that I am, I am worried I will get them before our trip OR contract them while AT WDW. Then I was thinking, well no one really get the chicken pox anymore because they have the vaccine......but after reading this I see I am wrong! Guess I should call my doctor....

What if I get the pox from the vaccine?? :guilty:

Just an FYI, our school had a chicken pox "outbreak" of "epidemic" proportions with 30% of the children coming down with the chicken pox. Of those 30%, 80% had been vaccinated (does that make sense?). Anyway, after the Maine Center's for Disease Control stepped in, the school hosted a vaccination clinic where they gave a booster to the children. After speaking with my doctor, she also agreed that a booster will more than likely be necessary in the next few years. Most of the children that became infected were between 6-9 years of age. She did not recommend giving my DS3 a booster at this time, b/c his immunity to the disease is probably still very high considering he got his first vaccination at about 2.

All of this is very reminiscent of when the MMR vaccination was developed. They eventually realized that a booster was needed for that vaccination as well.

After the vaccine you could possibly get a few bumps. This is just a side effect of the vaccine (like the rash with MMR). Most people do not get them. As an adult you will need 2 shots!
