Once John had finished signing all the paperwork necessary to rent a surrey bike, one of the guys came over and told us how to operate the bike. He showed us where the brake was, the bell and which way to start out. You can't tell it from the pictures I posted earlier, but the walkway to the marina is a little steep. All of us had to pedal hard to make it up the hill. And then, we were off!

Let me stop here and say that when we rented the surrey bikes back in 2007, the kids went nuts with the bell. The guy had told us to ring the bell when you see people in front of you so that they'd know you were coming. The bell isn't a typical "ring ring" bicycle bell. It's a "clang clang" clapper type bell. It's loud too! Lacey and Hunter would go crazy with the bell and we had the best time.
While we were pedaling, we were reminiscing about the bell incident and couldn't stop laughing even though it was 2 years later. Gosh, we can laugh at anything.
So, we're pedaling along and the walkway is almost empty. Does that stop Little Miss Lacey from clanging the bell? Absolutely not. She was clang, clang, clanging that bell like there was a fire somewhere and she was the firetruck trying to get there. And, when she wasn't clanging it, Hunter would lean over and give it a clang or two. Now, had there been a lot of people around, we wouldn't have let them keep doing it because it would have been a bit disruptive. But, we pretty much had the promenade all to ourselves.
Okay, time to post more pictures. Some may be a bit blurry because we were pedaling the crap out of the bike and had it going at a pretty good pace.

You can see that we were going fast when I took this picture:

Up ahead we could see the wooden walkway and Lacey started freaking out. She was pulling down on the brake (it's near the steering wheel). The way the surrey bikes work is the two people on the left side of the bike pedal together and the two people on the right side of the bike pedal together. Well, John was behind Lacey and he wouldn't stop pedaling even though Lacey had and she was putting on the brake. The bike was kind of wobbling. We were all laughing so hard because Lacey was freaking out. It was much much funnier in person.

We continued on with our bike ride and, once we got out from under the shelter of the trees, we could see little sprinkles on the walkway. It wasn't raining hard, it was just sprinkling a little. The bike had a canopy on it so we didn't think the rain would bother us.

As soon as Lacey saw the next wooden walkway, she told John to slow it down!

***Interruption: Boss is yelling something. Let me go see what he is blubbering about!
