stephen king novels

Unless I dreamed it I also remember reading that he is a fan of the Harry Potter books (which I also love!).

I read that also.

King's favorite (and also mine) is Shirley Jackson. Brilliant writer. The Haunting Of Hill House and We Have Always Lived In The Castle are masterpieces of understated horror, imho.

misery is my personal favorite (I love the movie as well, wouldn't want to get on Kathy Bates' bad side!)

"The Dead Zone" is my all time favorite by him. Then "Salem's Lot", "The Shining", "Cell", and "Bag of Bones". But I can't comment on the others because I haven't read all of his books. I have just about half of them, I just haven't read them. I think I'm going to start "Hearts in Atlantis" soon.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned - The Dark Tower series. Once you finish those you will see how all of his other books have elements of the Dark Tower in them.

John Saul's book are too much the same IMO. I do read him from time to time though.

Good horror writers include Richard Matheson, Clive Barker (if you like really WEIRD stuff), Ramsey Campbell, Dennis Ethison and Peter Straub. I do love a good horror novel. :)

I love his work as an author, a painter, and a director/producer. Peter Straub is also really good.

I'm a huge King fan. My favorite book of his is Hearts in Atlantis. My other tops are Rose Madder, The Green Mile, The Dead Zone and the collection of Bachman books which includes Rage, The Long Walk, Roadwork, and The Running Man.

The movie "Stand By Me" was based on his short story "The Body." I loved The Stand, Shining, Misery, IT, Gerald's Game, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and a lot of his short stories, especially "The Long Walk."

His son is writing under the name Joe Hill and had two great-selling novels before anyone caught on. I haven't read either one yet, but they are on my Christmas list!

My two favorites are probably The Shining and Salem's Lot. I've read alot of his books but most were his earlier stuff.

The only problem I have with Stephen King, is it seems to take forever for his books to get going. I feel the first 200 hundred pages or so are painfully boring in some of his books. Once the story gets going, they are great though.

That's funny, because a line from Hearts in Atlantis sticks with me whenever I start a new book, SK or otherwise. I can't remember the characters names off hand, but the old man has given the boy a copy of Lord of the Flies and says something to the effect of "Give it 50 pages. If a book isn't giving more than it's taking by 50 pages, it's time to put it down".

I loved that book too. I don't have the problem of not getting into them-my problem is when I'm reading them the whole world stops. It usually doesn't take me over 2-3 days to finish. Dh hates it when I get a new book!

My favorite's are 'The Green Mile' and 'The Shawshank Redemption'. I couldn't even finish 'Pet Sematary', way too creepy for me.

My favorites are Dead Zone and Thinner (I think that was a Bachman book).

The Stand was my favorite book and movie!

My daughter and I just saw "The Mist" yesterday. Scared the holy hell outta me! I much prefer King movies that aren't so icky. It was a great movie, though, just a lot of icky parts that made me jump outta my seat and/or made me yank my hood over my eyes do I didn't have to see! :rotfl:

Hearts in Atlantis is an excellent read. I loved that book.

Have you all seen 1408? That movie scared me silly. I am a die hard horror film fan and it has been a long time since I actually JUMPED while watching a movie. It was based on a King short story.

In that King writing book, (On Writing) he discussed his writing processes for the short story 1408. He shows how he radically revises the first content to publication.

Blaze actually is already out. I got it a couple of months ago, but haven't read it yet. I'm currently working on Lisey's Story. Supposedly(according to the book jacket), "Richard Bachman" wrote Blaze in 1973 and SK "found" it amonst his stuff 2006. ;)

I got Blaze from the library and for some reason just couldn't start it. :confused3 I'll end up getting again. Maybe just in the mood for some lighter reading.

I also have Lisey's Story on my bedroom floor. Is it just me or was anyone else completely confused by it? Granted I can't get past the first 75 pages or so but geez I can't keep it straight. :headache:

I really enjoyed Thinner and Lawnmower Man.

Anyone read any Dean Koontz?

Are you referring to Danse Macabre? I have it but have never read it for some reason I think I bought it and then stuck it in my little library and forgot about it.

On Writing is a different book than Danse Macabre. And Blaze has been out for some time. Very good story.
To whatever poster is struggling with Lisey's Story, STICK WITH IT!! The beginning is a little hard to follow, but you will be rewarded if you keep reading.
I am a huge SK fan, have a Dark Tower tattoo, have heard him read twice, and have 2 autographs. He is an amazing person.
