stephen king novels

I may be wrong but isn't The eyes of the Dragon a sequel to the Dark Tower Series? It has the same Character Roland in it.

It's a different Roland. The Roland in that movie has Randall Flagg for an advisor, so they are linked :)

Two gems (imho) that often get overlooked are The Green Mile and The Long Walk (under the Richard Bachman moniker).

Favorite? Has to be The Stand. Also loved Dolores Claiborne, It, Insomnia, and of course, The Shining.

Try the DarkTower books. There is also a new one coming out about the beginning of Roland.

I liked the movie in general, but I liked the ending of the book better, it was much more vague, so you could assume what you want happened, unlike the movie which had a horrible ending

It was horrible !! As the mother of a 6 yr old son (blonde hair too), it really bothered me. I wanted to walk out....I wish I had. :sad2: The novella was better.

My favorite S.K book is The Stand. And I think it was one of the few made for tv movies based on his work that was any good.

I would recommend Night Shift and Different Seasons if you are looking for other SK books. The Boogie Man is STILL the creepiest story I've ever read.

I love book talk! I appreciate all the input!

Can I say on this thread that I didn't really care for The Cell?

Nope, you can say it. I've read every single book except all of the Dark Tower series, and I hated that one. Glad I only bought the paperback.

I would have to say It and Pet Sematary scared me the most. The Salem's Lot short story in Night Shift freaked me out too.:scared1:

I've always loved the Lawnmower Man short story; just so hilarious to me for some reason. The movie made no sense, though. It had almost nothing to do with the story as I recall.:confused3

I also think Eyes of the Dragon was one of my all time favorites, even though I recall nothing about it now; it has been so many years since I read it.

And Needful Things was fabulous.

I bought The Green Mile in the original series of small paperbacks as they were released and should re-read them. That was such an incredible story. The movie makes me cry like a baby every time I see it. :sad1:

My DH was extremely surprised to learn that King wrote both The Green Mile and (Rita Hayworth and)The Shawshank Redemption. That is probably his favorite all time movie. He always thought of King as horror only.

This thread has got me obsessing over Stephen King now! I went to his site, and the new Dark Tower book wasn't written by him, but he oversaw the project. He does have a new book coming out called Blaze. He wrote it as Richard Bachman. I printed out a list of all of his works, and I'm going to make it a goal for next year to read anything I haven't already, and to re-read the Stand. Then I think I'll start re-reading the Dark Tower Series. Since I started them as a 13 yr old, and finished them at 33, I think a reread would be fun!

I read my first Steven King book when I was in 6th grade. It was Firestarter, which I loved.

Blaze actually is already out. I got it a couple of months ago, but haven't read it yet. I'm currently working on Lisey's Story. Supposedly(according to the book jacket), "Richard Bachman" wrote Blaze in 1973 and SK "found" it amonst his stuff 2006. ;)

In his interview on TV he said that he had one book he regretted publishing and that was "Rage"?? I think it was called. It was about someone shooting up a school and there was some copycat incidences.

Christine
Cujo
Firestartet
It (my favorite)
Misery
Pet Semetary

after the stnad which I never finished, I thought he had lost his touch

If you want a reader that will really put horror out there:

http://www.johnsaul.com/

IMO John Saul has him by 20 miles.

The Right Hand of Evil was the first book I read by him :scared1: :scared1:

John Saul's book are too much the same IMO. I do read him from time to time though.

Good horror writers include Richard Matheson, Clive Barker (if you like really WEIRD stuff), Ramsey Campbell, Dennis Ethison and Peter Straub. I do love a good horror novel. :)

I think the Dark Tower series is a masterpiece. The 1st book, the Gunslinger, was a little hard for me to get into at first but I kept plugging on and I'm sure I did! The Talisman co-written with Peter Straub would be my favorite single book, although there was a sequel to that called Black House, but I can't remember if King was a co-author on that one or not or if it was just Straub.

:thumbsup2 One of the greats! I wonder how good this latest movie version of I Am Legend will be?

If it's half as good as the book, it'll be great IMO.

Did you know that he has a son named Richard Christian Matheson that also writes? He is very good too but seems to be sticking to screenplays nowadays.

Sorry for the OT. I've read that King is a fan of Richard Matheson so he probably wouldn't mind. ;)
