What is the maximum difference you can use a step down ring without seeing the edge of the adaptor? For example I have an 82mm lense and a 77mm polarizer filter. Can you use it without seeing the edge?

0. You can use step up rings without a problem. Step down rings will pretty much always vignette unless the lens happens to have a much wider filter diameter than glass size. If you've got an 82mm lens, it's pretty certain that they are using all 82mm.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to be able to get away with it, I just wasn't sure. When I bought my three new lenses, they included a set of 77mm filters with the 70-200. I knew it would work with the 67mm 28-70, just didn't know with the 82mm 100-300.

The exception to this might be when we are using a full-frame lens on a crop-sensor camera, then the full lens might not be used.

The Sigma 100-300mm f4 EX DG lens is a full frame lens and I'm using it on a Pentax K10D, which is obviously a crop sensor camera. With it only being 5mm diameter difference (82-77mm), do you think it will work?
