Star Tours and Motion Sickness

I have to chime in with a different perspective. I don't get motion sickness at all and the old version of ST never made me sick. However, now that ST is 3D I cannot ride it without having the worst headache and equilibrium problems. I already know that I have a problem with watching things in 3D (one of the reasons why I haven't been happy with Hollywood's fascination with 3D feature films) so I try to stay away from it at all times. I rode ST 2.0 3 different times and after the final time, I have sworn off it completely (which is horrible as I am a huge Star Wars fan).

So just be aware that 3D might cause motion sickness issues along with the improved ride simulators. HTH!

My dh got very sick on it. Didn't puke but it wrecked his whole morning and we went back to the hotel at lunch and after a rest her felt better. I felt icky for 5-10 min after the ride stopped then I was ok. Funny dh doesn't get motion sickness as a rule and I get it in the car and on rides that spin:rotfl2: HOwever on the rides that spin I feel icky for 5-10 after too. Cars I do puke in though lol I love st though and do it

I get motion sickness and when we went to DL I didn't want to risk it. I wore my sea band AND took my ginger pills to help. I felt a bit queasy at some points but not bad at all. It didn't ruin our day at all. I had the same feelin when riding the big ferris wheel at DCA. My DD wanted the rocking one and that was not a fun ride.

I also do better on the new version compared to the old one. On the old one I either had to close my eyes or just look only at C3PO and never at the screen. So, now while I get a little queasy feeling I can at least watch the action. I'd do better if they had a good stream of air blowing on each seat. What they have is too far away to be extremely beneficial.

I cannot ride Star Tours without help. The last time I did so, I got a very bad headache and motion sickness, though I didn't quite make it all the way to throwing up. But I was pretty useless for quite a while after. I can stand it today, but only if I use these:

Wrist-Bands_300x3001.jpg

These are wrist bands that do a pretty good job of suppressing the sickness. They should be available at a wal mart or target.

I still don't particularly enjoy the ride, but the physical effects are mostly removed with these. I can now at least do the ride with my son.

I'm surprised so many people are affected by ST. I usually go with a group of people that don't like roller coasters, but they all love ST.

Personally, I think it is an awesome ride, so for anyone else reading this, unless you are prone to motion sickness, don't let this thread scare you away from trying it. :thumbsup2

Most reports from people who rode the old ST and the new ST just opened in 2011 is that people have less of an issue with sickness on the new ride.

I completely agree with this.
In Disneyland Paris they still have the old version, and it makes me sick. However I had no problem with ST in Disneyland (except I had the same scenes three times in a row ).
To reduce motion sickness a little bit, ask for a front row seat. At least in the old version it makes a little difference.

After these comments I'm wondering why ST has never made me motion sick. I haven't ridden the new version yet, but I've always had trouble with motion sickenss. Other of these kinds of rides knock me out of commission for at least an hour, like Back to the Future. I cannot ride that one. So why did I never have trouble with ST? I couldn't tell you. But now I'm scared to try the new version.

The old one made me queasy but I rode it so many times I knew when to shut my eyes and could usually do it once a trip. I have only tried the new one once and of course it was the pod race one and I did NOT feel good after. So I haven't been back. I felt worse with the new one but it may have been the particular scene. Would like to try again but don't want to feel yucky so I usually just skip it.

I'm prone to motion sickness (don't even talk to me about riding in the back seat of a car), and I'm perfectly fine on Star Tours.

Space Mountain makes me want to vomit, and then only ride that actually has, is the tea cups.

I can ride the craziest roller coasters again and again and feel great, but Star Tours does me in every time. Usually I have to sit down with a carbonated beverage for a little while afterward, and a couple of times I've actually spent most of the ride with my eyes closed and my head down.

Yet I still go on it, year after year, because I just love Star Wars too much not too! My DF has threatened to bring an airsickness bag, just in case it finally becomes too much.

I guess I'm the opposite, I don't get sick on Star Tours (either 1.0 or 2.0), but I am deathly afraid of roller coasters :)

Add me to the list of near-pukers. I'll try any ride once and I always take a Bonine in the morning before the parks. But the new ST was miserable for me. I don't know if it's worse than the old version, or if now that I'm pushing 40 I am a bigger wimp. But I was looking for the barf bags. Closing my eyes only makes it worse. The only other ride that makes me that sick is Space Mountain because I can't see where I'm going.

Is Star Tours anything like Mission Space at WDW? If so we will stay far away. We were queasy for at least an hour after.

Anything like? Yes, in that they are both motion simulators. But M:S spins while ST is linear. M:S really gets me. The new ST not so much.

:wizard:

Ditto here, I like roller coasters, and enjoy going fast and even upside down, but Star Tours ugh. I go on it for my son's sake, he loves Star Wars.

When I am older and on death's door, I think I will remind him then....do you remember when daddy took you on Star Tours? Just in case he tells me I was a terrible father :)

Swap Star Tours for It's a Small World, and change "death's door" for "when she's a teenager", and I'm right there with you...

Did the Bonine help at all? I was thinking of buying some for my wife before our next trip, but I don't want to waste money on it if it's not effective. Also, does it make you drowsy?

I take Bonine periodically, as I work for an oceanographic research institution. Like any drug, it's highly individual. Your best bet is to buy some for your DW and have her try it out sometime before your trip. It's not very expensive.

That said, for me, it's a great drug. Most first-generation antihistamines put me right out, as does Dramamine, Zyrtec, and lots of others. Bonine affects me hardly at all that way - I take one and I'm good to go. But like any drug, it is only so effective. There are some situations that are so drastic that no drug will help. I'm afraid that, for me, the new generation Star Tours is one such situation :sad1: But it helps me tremendously with seasickness :)

I've always gotten motion sick but the only time I've every actually thrown up as an adult is on turbulent airplane rides. I have never thrown up when I've taken the Bonine. So it does help a little somewhat. I still get queasy though and I generally get headache after the queasies. I don't get sleepy on it. But everyone is very different with these things.

I think that is Star Tours is a problem for me because it is exactly like being on a very turbulent airplane ride. So if you get air sick, you will probably get sick on ST.
