Spirit Airlines will start charging $10 for the 2nd checked bag starting 2/11/07

I'm not sure how you get $20, since both bags have to go both ways, I imagine it will be $40.

I've already emailed Spirit Airlines my complaint, and will be following up with their corporate office next week.

Forgive me, I mis-typed, of COURSE it would be $40 for the round trip.

And I'm curious as well, like another poster asked, have you ever flown Spirit?

I agree that in the grand scheme of things, this isn't really anything to get up in arms about.

I have 3 kids and while we seldom fly, we easily use just one checked bag per person, if that!

The youngest is 3, and her clothes have always been packed with mine in my suitcase. The other two can have separate suitcases, but I could fit both their clothes into one large one so I could bring a carseat.

Each carries a backpack with toys, and I carry a backpack that acts as a diaper bag/purse.

If we bring a stroller, I check it at the gate.

Booster seats are cheap - you could pick one up for less than $20 at Walmart when you get to your destination if you don't want to pay the additional fee for extra checked luggage.

I agree with you also. For me to fly spirit is still cheaper by the hundreds compared to other airline companies. I have always had great service with Spirit too. I hope the company continues to do well as they have and be able to keep our fares as low as they do. Really $20(round trip) I couldnt fill up my gas tank with that. Plus how much money do you shell out at Disney vs the $20 for your luggage?! A counter service for two can run us $20!!! hahaha, Disney aint cheap in any way you look at it.

If it was I would visit more often then I currently do. ;)

You CANNOT bring a booster seat as a carryon. You cannot use a true booster seat (not a car seat) on a plane.

So gate check it. It isn't hard to do...and as far as my niece has said they don't count it toward your luggage allowance if you gate check it. She has worked the gate and the ramp and the other luggage areas *though now she is a flight attendant* but they don't count that as part of your luggage allowance if you gate check it.

Really not a big deal. We traveled with our kids when they were newborns and it wasn't a big deal to get all 5 of us packed in a suitcase for each person.

The future.... (This is from Ryan Air's website. Like Spirt they often have VERY low loss leader fares.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Checked Baggage Allowance:

A Baggage Fee is charged for the carriage of each item of Checked Baggage per item of baggage/per one way flight. The Baggage Fee may be prepaid at a discounted rate when making your reservation via www.ryanair.com - Click here for details, or if pay for your Baggage Fee at the airport, or through a Ryanair call - Click here for details. Baby buggies, wheelchairs, mobility scooters and walking frames are carried free of charge.

The Checked Baggage allowance is 15kg (about 33 pounds) per person. There is no baggage allowance for infants, although a pram/buggy will be carried free of charge. Each Passenger may check-in up to three items of checked baggage, up to the checked baggage allowance per person (a Baggage Fee is charged for each item of checked baggage). (Carols' Note: They mean at all 3 items TOTAL cannot weigh more then 33 pounds and you are still charged per piece. Not sure why anyone would take 3 10 pound suitcases)

For health and safety reasons Ryanair will not accept any individual item exceeding 32 kilos and with combined dimensions of more than 81cms height, 119cms wide and 119cms depth. This weight limit does not apply to mobility equipment.

What is my Cabin Baggage Allowance?

Ryanair allows each passenger (excluding infants) to carry one small piece of hand baggage on board free of charge. The hand baggage must not weigh more than 10kg and be less than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, in dimensions (restrictions apply from certain countries) Click here for details. For the safety and convenience of all passengers, hand baggage must fit underneath the seat or in the overhead compartment. (Carol's Note: Swiss Air tried to check my computer case because it was OVER the weight limit. They weigh it at baggage check!)

Excess Baggage:
Checked baggage in excess of the checked baggage allowance per passenger will be charged a fee per kilo - Click here for details.

The child doesn't have to sit in it in order to carry it on. I've carried on a TurboBooster belt positioning booster seat many times on several different airlines; with the armrests in the lowest position it normally fits nicely under the seat.

Now a full hardback booster seat would be a different proposition, because it would not fit under the seat or into an overhead bin.

Many US carriers will allow a gate-checked carseat (any type, even boosters) and a stroller in addition to the standard allowance. The best thing to do is write to the airline in question and find out. (I say write because the written answer would then be proof that you can carry with you.)

I don't have a problem with it at all! We want cheap fares, something has to give. SPIRIT has always been NO FRILLS airline. No pillows, no blankets, no snacks at all unless you cough up your charge card and purchase them onboard (Don't bring cash, they won't take it).

I flew a lot with my kids for extended trips and we always managed to get their stuff in ONE suitcase and didn't need to bring the whole friggin' toy room with us either!

American charges $2 per bag to curbside check.

The thing that concerns me if this goes to other airlines is more people will carryon. The carryon situation can sometimes be ridiculous, people trying to stuff huge bags up there. That's where I would like to see enforcement of rules.

We've flown spirit before - from DFW to Jamaica and those 4 flights were our first and ONLY flights on this airline. You could not pay us to fly their airline again. All of our flights were late - no weather delays and unfortunately we had plenty of time to make all the flights because of their continued delays. We had bags lost for 4 days because they could not get their act together (thank goodness for travel insurance) and their flight attendants were rude, disrespectful and downright mean during our flights. I've never been so upset as to see the way one of them treated an elderly man who clearly could not hear her and was simply asking a question.

I would hope that if they are going to charge for checked baggage that they actually get it there on time.

Yes, it did sound like you had quite the nasty experience on that trip. They say first impressions are improtant and when a first impression raises your blood pressure not many can argue with that. I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience.

Yes, I fly Spirit all the time.

Usually, I can get by with one bag a person. But for two week trips, or trips out of the country, it's a different story.

I find it interesting there are NO news reports on this that I could find yesterday. They are trying to sneak the news in.

Or perhaps is not newsworthy.

Sorry, but I can't see this as being a "breaking news story" LOL!

Yes, because I'm sure Spirit Air controls the news media.

I agree with CarolA on this one, it's really not all that newsworthy.

Oh, it certainly is a news story. Halving the allowable bag allowance affects many passengers, who would certainly like to know about it before they show up to check in.

Remember how all the media covered the fact when they lowered the weight you could have in a bag? Many media outlets covered that, and there were several threads on it.

Then apparently your issue is with the media outlets - because if we know about the change, so do they. The media outlets apparently feel the charge is not a newsworthy story.

I have never had to take more than one bag pp and have traveled extensively. I always wonder just what people pack in their huge suitcases that I'm missing in my one medium:rotfl2: Actually, in most cases, I am able to get away with a 5-6 day trip (warm weather) with just a carry-on. Spent 6 months backpacking Europe and yes, used only a backpack! That was the only time I felt I needed more but mostly because the weather fluctuated so much, from cold, damp, and rainy in Scotland, to snow in Switzerland to 65 degrees in Italy, all on the one trip. If we go for a week or 10 days, my daughter and I SHARE one large suitcase and my son has a rolling duffle that he uses. Just how many clothes and pairs of shoes do you need on vacation? I agree that land/cruise vacations require more and that cold weather vacations (especially the skiing ones) require more luggage but come on people, leave that 6th and 7th pair of shoes at home when you travel. It's just too much work for me!:rolleyes1

I don't fly Spirit - I fly Southwest - but I don't think $10 for a 2nd bag is worth getting all in a tither about..

However - I am one of those people who ALWAYS over packs - it's like an OCD thing with me - and I would really, really appreciate it if some of you folks who fly with only one bag would tell ME how to do it..

Part of the problem is thinking "I might need this" - or "I might want that" - and the other part is that I HATE having to purchase things elsewhere that I already have HERE!!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
