Spin Off: interesting baby names

Reagan was really popular in our area. I know a lot of boys and girls with that name that range in age from early teens to early 20's.

There is a slave in the Outlander series with this name-I hope this little girl isn't named after her.

I still think the all time OMG name is ESPN-yes after the TV station and they pronounce it E-S-P-N.

i have cousins whose parents (different sides of the family, don't even know of each other) decided to honor the circumstances of their conceptions by bestowing unique (and in my opinion-god awful) names on them-

maui (where he was conceived)
truelove (what they felt as they created a new life).

needless to say, both have adopted different names as adults (and i think truelove had hers legaly changed).

My name has been #1 for quite sometime, and truth be told its awful! I wouldn't wish that on any child. Its almost like your parents were super uncreative and named you what everyone else named their kid.

With that said I will NEVER EVER have any Aidan/Aiden, Brayden, Caden, Jaden, Hayden, ect...
Literally every family I know with a boy under the age of 8 has at least 1 son named one of the names I listed above. Totally obnoxious! On top of that they do creative spellings. Poor kid won't ever learn to spell his name right.

"Some" of us thought having names that were on the top ten was a "good" thing..... Guess not so much now.
:rotfl2:

I'm guessing the "Bentley" on the list has a mom who is a fan of "Teen Mom". One of the mothers on that show (she's the most likeable and mature of the other teens) named her son that.

My nieces are named Reagan and Carsyn.

Sometimes I wish I could rename my girls because their names are SO commonplace now, but they weren't when they were born. Hannah and Haley. They each have tons of Hannahs and Haleys in their classes. I wanted unique names, but somehow I ended up with the "Jennifer" of the 90's. (no offense to any Jennifer...I'm a Heather and that's almost the same frequency).
And no offense to mamas of boys named Austin, and maybe it's just in this part of the county, but you can't throw a rock without hitting an "Austin".

I work in a school. We have been in session for 6 days. So far this week I have seen Precious Amiracle, Miracle, and Amiracle (I guess their mothers thought they were being You-neek ). There is a Prince Michael, Princess, and Empress. Then there's Kye-you(I kid you not), Quisean, Nardnisha, Dequavion, Jh'Darrial, and Sh'Travious (also known as TJ :confused3) I really feel sorry for these kids having to carry these names through life. Can you see us electing Prince Michael Jones to the presidency? How about CEO of Bank of America? Doctor Empress? I think it might be a long shot.

But I saved the best for last--Bodacious. :sad2: Her parents need to be smacked upside the head and made to do 18 years of community service in a home for unwed mothers.

I hope her middle name isn't tatas...:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

We have a few girls in the area named Abcde.............yes, that is correct. Pronounced AB-sa-DE.

The gratuitous apostrophe thing has been going on for a while. AFAICT, it seems to be a misguided attempt to make the names look/sound French, on the apparent theory that French-sounding equals sophisticated. What this really equals is ignorance. Poor kids.

Another odd pattern is to alter names to end in variations of "...ious", which I guess is supposed to make them sound like Latin and impress people with how "manly" they sound -- you'll notice that girls never get that style of name -- except for Bodacious, of course.

The parents who named their son Prince Michael are probably Michael Jackson fans. His oldest is named that....

There was a girl in my highschool class who had twin boys and ended up naming them Juan-One and Juan-Two.:rolleyes1

it seems like in ds's age group (13) the popular name is some variation on skylar (we've had skylar, schular, and schkylar as spellings). i don't know if it's just a freaky coincidence, but despite encountering them at different schools, in different states, all 4 tended to be the troublemakers/bullies (including the girls).

when i taught in the mid 80's variations on shawn were popular (one year i had sean, shawn, and shaun all in my e-k class, and since none could yet fully write their own name it was amusing to hear arguing with the others over the correct way to spell it:rotfl:).

with dd's group (16) i have yet to meet a single emily who, if she has any sisters, fails to have one named ashley. and most commonly, they pronounce their names as m-i-lee and ash-a-lee:rotfl::rotfl:

I hope it is a coincidence, my DD11's middle name is Skylar and she is the best behaved of my 3, who none are too bad. :) She for sure isn't a bully, hope there isn't too much trouble in our future.

Funny, I have a friend who has an Emily and an Ashley, and no less then 5 times, seriously, we hve been out and heard a mom call "Emily---Ashley" and I turn to think it's her and it isn't. :confused3

I have a relative who was named after a character in All's Well that Ends Well. Her mother was well pleased with the name, as it was classical and sweet. I rather like the name myself.

Then a certain British actress came along and though her name was spelled the same she pronounced it in a different manner.

And suddenly everyone presumes that the correct pronunciation is the incorrect pronunciation, because of course, we're from Louisiana and obviously uneducated and the actress is British:rolleyes:.

The relative now has changed her name by one vowel so as to have a name that is almost her name and that will be pronounced properly without comment, just so she doesn't have to educate every person she meets on the proper pronunciation of her name.

How do you pronounced your daughter's name? I am Maryke pronounce Marie Kah
It is almost the same as you do then:thumbsup2 The accent is on the middle syllable (I can't tell if you accent the middle or last). We tell people to think Maria with a K in it. It is the more Scandinavian pronunciation.

In Eastern Europe (Hungry in particular) it is fairly common but pronounces as Ma-RYE-Ka. Most Germans assume the Hungarian pronunciation but are able to easily adjust in.

In the US people tended to want to pronounce it like the last three syllables of America. Again, the adjusted easily though.

I'm such a nerd. As soon as I read Leif, i thought....oh yeah, Leif Ericson.haha
That is always who I think of when I hear the name.

Marika probably wouldn't have, but I probably would have put Rio on the list. I like both names, though. There's German restaurant here called Marika's. Now I'm hungry for it. :)
Funny--I do not know any German Marika's--I am always told it is a Hungarian name (which we did not know when we chose it; we were thinking of it as Dutch--which it also is:upsidedow).
SO how does the restaurant name get pronounced?

It is Ma- REE-ka. I am part Dutch and that is where I got it from. I hated it growing up cause nobody could pronounce it.I always said I was going to change it at 18 but I love it now.I like being different :goodvibes

I am glad you like it:goodvibes I am surprised you had so much trouble getting people to pronounce it correctly though. I don't think my Marika has ever had to correct someone twice. Then again, I grew up with a bevy of people trying to get three syllables out of my name (making it rhyme with Natallie)--my third grade teacher never did get it right :sad2:

I gave both of my kids normal middle names and have always said it is so if they dislike the unusual names they have a fall back. SO far they both really like their names. We are lucky that both are easy for Germans to pronounce (since we live in Germany now). I ended up going by my middle name in Spain as a teen because Spaniards tended to massacre the pronunciation of Hadley:lmao:

ETA--there used to be a Marika Partridge on NPR as well. Maybe enough people heard it there and from the sportswear company that is out now that the name is starting to sound more "normal" to people than it did when you were younger.

I so badly wanted to name my DD (who's 7) Nora Marilyn. DH was adamently against it, since he thought it sounded like an old woman's name.

She ended up Juliana Marilyn, and the name really suits her. Her middle name is for DH's mom, who passed a few years prior to DD's birth. I really think that I blessed DD with MIL's personality when I gave her the name since she acts just like her most of the time.

If it's the name I suspect it is, I think there's one than one acceptable pronunciation, isn't there? I know I've heard it pronounced three different ways. But maybe those are fairly recent developments in the name. I do know that it is legitimately pronounced two different ways depending on the language/country.

Btw, I don't really like the way the actress pronounces it. If that pronunciation is used, I prefer the simpler form.
