Spin Off: interesting baby names

Poor little Eugene, Gloria, and Mable - nineteenth century names in a 21st century classrooom.

See, I think those are much better than many others. I can't say I like Eugene and Gloria much, but Mabel (spelled this way) is pretty, I think, and coming back into style.

The most interesting name I've ever seen is the name Kjersti (pronounced SHAW-stee). That was the name of a little girl in a kindergarten class I was an assistant in when I was in high school.

I went to college with one of those. She claimed it was something Scandinavian. :confused3

My favorite name that I've seen on online birth announcements is Jacup. I think it's hilarious.

Trust me, that's a good thing. Would you go to a doctor named Mark or James or would you go to one named Axel?

I can't say I ever gave much thought to a professional's given name as a reason to go to or avoid them.

There's a fine line between unusual and weird, to be sure, but I think in some aspects the very common are just as bad as the way out there. Common names are easily forgotten and/or confused with others of the same name. Weird names, depending on the type of weird, can carry a negative connotation about one's education and upbringing. The ideal, IMO, is an uncommon but not unknown name - something unique without being weird or made up.

FWIW, I don't think Axel is weird at all. It is a Danish name that is still pretty common in parts of Europe, though for most Americans Axl Rose is probably the first thing it brings to mind.

born in July and August at a local hospital.

Disclaimer: I am not making fun of these babies, just posting interesting names. I also will not only post names I think are bad, but names I like, too (though most will be names I don't like). Since we're a university town and this is a university hospital, some names will be foreign.

Saw lots of Braydens, Jacksons, Chloes, Sydneys, Peytons, Maxwells

My kids would make your list most likely. My daughter is Marika and my son is Rio. There is a Marika who lives next door to my in-laws but we have not otherwise heard an American with the name.
I have known two Rios and my husband has known one (other than our son of course).
My name is fairly unusual too. I am named for Hemmingway's first wife.

Marika probably wouldn't have, but I probably would have put Rio on the list. I like both names, though. There's German restaurant here called Marika's. Now I'm hungry for it. :)

I went to junior high with a MariTa. Also a Rochelle, Richelle and Carmelle. lol

I was the only Kimblerly in my class from K-12. I go by Kim, because the long version to me sounds stuffy. My daughter, who will be 10 in October is named Grace. When we picked the name, it was not popular at all. Now, it is definitely making a comeback. She is still the only Grace in her school though so I guess it's still not making a comeback here.

Some of the more unusual ones we've come across (mostly other students in my kids classes) are:
Glycerine (Glyce)
Thor
Luna
Ester (uncommon)
Marjorie (uncommon)
Stone
Eykis
Jagger
Liberty

Wow..these names scary me LOL.

There is a girl in my grade named Deonjenia .. I asked her how to spell it..

I could barely pronounce it! We just call her D.J. It's pronounced D-on-genie-ah

If I ever have kids I like Aislinn [pronounced Ace Lynn] I used to like Alice but it is so common now that Twilight is around  Aislinn and Charlotte
for guys I like Jack

however my coworkers at the time would reply: "You mean like the girl in the Exorcist?" LOL!

:lmao: I guess I'm twisted, too, because that's always my first thought when I hear that name.

What is up with the names on the list with the random apostrophes?

I work with a girl named Somer and it is not pronouned So-mer, it is shimmer. Uhm..what? :confused3

I guess I like the older names....two of my favorite girl's names are

Irene
and
Camille

For boys I like

Aidian (yes, like the little boy in The Ring :lmao:)

How do you pronounced your daughter's name? I am Maryke pronounce Marie Kah

Well, i am a Jennifer. Needless to say, ever since I was a child I knew that when I became a Mommy I wanted my child to have a name that was "different" but not too far out there.

We named our daughter Reagan. This tells you the kind of people I was workign with when I was pregnant. I told coworkers we were naming her Reagan. Now most of the time, I get "You mean like the President?' however my coworkers at the time would reply: "You mean like the girl in the Exorcist?" LOL!

We've been pretty lucky that no one else we know has her name, except for at her daycare, there is an infant who is named Raegan (speeled a bit differently). We lived in a small town, so it doesn't surprise me if they heard of our Rea and chose the name.

The only time we ever meet a Reagan is at DisneyWorld. So far on our trips I have met two. And funny enough, they are the same age as my Rea.

My neice is named Madison, back in the late 90's at the height of the Madison popularity. She knows several other Madisons.

I do have a super secret name that the hubster and I both like if we have another girl. We were going to use it for Reagan, but we felt that it was too out there. Now with all of the Kennedys, Taylors, Chandlers, etc we come across, we plan on using it. However, I am sunk if I ever have a boy. Most of the boy names I like are traditional and common.

Reagan was really popular in our area. I know a lot of boys and girls with that name that range in age from early teens to early 20's.

Just looked it up for my own edification. Phedre (with assorted missing accents) is apparently the French spelling of Phedra or Phaedra. It is an old classical Greek name.

There is a slave in the Outlander series with this name-I hope this little girl isn't named after her.

I still think the all time OMG name is ESPN-yes after the TV station and they pronounce it E-S-P-N.

it seems like in ds's age group (13) the popular name is some variation on skylar (we've had skylar, schular, and schkylar as spellings). i don't know if it's just a freaky coincidence, but despite encountering them at different schools, in different states, all 4 tended to be the troublemakers/bullies (including the girls).

when i taught in the mid 80's variations on shawn were popular (one year i had sean, shawn, and shaun all in my e-k class, and since none could yet fully write their own name it was amusing to hear arguing with the others over the correct way to spell it:rotfl:).

with dd's group (16) i have yet to meet a single emily who, if she has any sisters, fails to have one named ashley. and most commonly, they pronounce their names as m-i-lee and ash-a-lee:rotfl::rotfl:
