Spin class no longer free?

Can anyone who has cruised recently tell me if the spin classes are still free? Someone on another social media platform was asking about fitness classes and another person answered that there's spin, but it costs money. I corrected them that, no, spin is free and they said that they paid for it last month onboard the Wonder. Are they mistaken or are the spin classes now a charge? I know the boot camp and maybe one other class had a charge. (Maybe the abs thing? I can't recall.)

Wow, it's a good thing I added extra money to our onboard account in advance of the cruise.

Are the instructors that good? Not all spin classes (or yoga or fill in your class or choice) are created equal. I would hate to blow $12USD on a crap class. In fact, I've never done the classes just because I didn't want to risk wasting the TIME on a crap class and have done my regular self guided workouts instead. To now risk wasting time and money makes it even less likely I would try a class on the ship.

Could it be that with the larger ships they just had so much interest that adding a fee reduced the attendance/interest to a manageable level?

What they should do is keep it free, but charge a 'no show' fee of $10--do a credit card guarantee type of thing like they have for ADR's at Disney World. That would keep the no-shows to a minimum.

I like this idea. You should send it in to DCL. We're sailing on the Magic next month. Unless someone else sails on her prior to ours, I'll report back and let you know if there was a fee.

The class was okay. I felt like I got something out of it even though I do a tougher one at home. I'm okay spending the money because it's not something we'll be doing daily.

If you go back to the pet peeve thread, no-shows were mine.

@anricat I just checked my Navigators from May and couldn't find anything. I don't recall seeing anything about paying for spin class. Sadly, DH and I never made it to the gym. We ran on Deck 4.
(I swear we were on the ship-- we just missed so many things and have to go back!)

Every time I've done it there have been no shows, but the wait list was crazy full, too. I never took a class that didn't have every bike full.

If they change it to 1 hour, it's more worth it to me to pay the $12, but not for 45 minutes. I know, it's just a 15 minute difference, but I was okay with a 45 minute free class. For a paid class, I would want an hour.

Why not just go and do your own cycling at a later time when you want instead of having a class?

Our instructor on the Wonder last year was FABULOUS. I went back again - she was that good. I had so much fun in spin class on the day we pulled into Ketchikan. It was so great - totally my happy place. It sounds silly, but it's one of my favorite moments from the cruise!

I went on the Magic in March and it wasn't as good. I got in a good workout, but the music was ear-blisteringly loud and I could barely hear the instructor. It also felt repetitive. I wouldn't have been happy if I'd paid $12. So I'd say it's a mixed bag.

They could if the charge was for the no shows. But the charge is so they can make extra money.

If you have to ask, I'm going to assume you've never been to a spin class. ;)

For one, you can't use the real actual spin bikes when not doing a class - you can only use the sort of wacky electronic stationary bikes (they are not created equal). Two, taking a spin class isn't the same as just phoning it on an exercise bike. A good instructor will really push you and have a good varied workout plan with hill climbs, sprints and more. Working out in a group environment is a completely different animal.
