Personally, I love to experiment. Right now, I am drinking a Kendall-Jackson Zinfindel, Cabernet blend (one of DH's faves). We have a World Market nearby, so I am always trying new wines. When we go out to eat to a nice restaurant, I will almost always chose what the sommlier/waiter recommends as long as it is within my price range. I LOVE trying new wines.
But, if you are going to experiment, knowing what you like and don't like is important. DH and I love dry, full-bodied red wines. We are not a big fan of sweet wines, but we know they have their place (with dessert). DH is not a big fan of white wines at all, but I keeps whites on hand during the summer because I find them more refreshing than reds.
If you want a good rule of thumb without drinking a lot of wine, think about how you like ice tea. DH and I drink unsweet tea with lemon. Lots of tanins just like dry, full-bodied red wines. The sweeter you like your ice tea, the sweeter you will probably like your wines.
Have fun experimenting!
