There are different kinds. THe one in my car is good for 60mph or 100km/h and had no real distance limitations. We drove about 200 miles on it and it looks new. Check your owners manual.
My dh always told me if I needed it (yeah, like I'd be able to put it on the van without him....), I could go 50-75 miles at 40mph.
Of course he was probably being overly cautious b/c I parallel parked into a jeep wrangler and scraped the whole (new) passenger side of the van up....without putting a scratch on the jeep.....
DH got a flat tire this evening and put the donut on. I warned him that he couldn't drive it all that much and he'd have to make arrangements to get a new tire on his car tomorrow. He insisted that he'd be able to drive it to work at least Friday until he could get a new tire on Saturday -- this is 120 miles round trip on a PA highway (pothole hell).
We got into a heated discussion about it, with me telling him it's not safe, but he insisted it would be fine.
He didn't even make it home on the donut! I'm just glad it wasn't serious!
