SouthWest is offering 50K points Credit Card again

Wow, just applied and was approved! This is a great deal as we use our Amex for everything to earn cash back. I'll just use this card till we hit the 2k. Does anyone know how it works if you say it's 58,000 points for a flight and you have 5k? Can you pay cash for the balance or maybe buy 4 tickets with the 50k and pay for 1?

You'd have to book the last ticket by itself under a different reservation or you can buy extra points. Buying extra points is a good deal depending on how many you need and the cost of the flight.

I checked my SW rewards account today and I got my points deposited. DH and I are going to book our July trip when I get home from work. We applied for 2 cards, one in each of our names, and are looking to get 5 round trip tickets. We are going to book one way tickets on each card. I can get 5 tickets for less than 45,000 points. I forgot that after you spend the $2,000 you get 2,000 points along with the 50,000 so I have 52,000 points to spend.

2 hrs on a plane in July is better than 18hrs in a car!!

You can transfer points between RR accounts. It must be done in blocks of 500 with a minimum of 1,000 RR points. It costs $5 per 500 points to make the transfer.

Most people would tell you to use one account to book all of the tickets in one direction and then the other account to book the return flights. Any combination that uses your points to the max would be better than paying to move points around.

Don't forget to look for opportunities for bonus points, like signing up for the Rapid Report newsletter, shopping through their portal or participating in eRewards surveys. Those bonus points add up!

How do you get signed up for the SW Erewards surveys?

Somehow I got signed up for eRewards through Hertz and I hardly ever use them, so I am collecting Hertz credits and may not use them.

thanks...

I don't think you have to be linked through SW, but rather just select the SW points with your rewards money. At least that's how my eRewards account works. I can select from a huge selection of rewards including SW.

Right. Mine works that way too. I get credits and when I have enough I redeem them for RR points. I have to put in my RR number each time. It's not linked to the erewards account even though I signed up through Southwest.

We booked our July flights down with the free points last night!! :cheer2: Now we just need to spend the rest of the $2,000 from my DH card and we can book the flights back, or we could just stay and not come back.

We were able to get 5 one way tickets for less than 45,000 points.

bcinohio.. If you have car insurance that is due that is a good way to spend the $2000 for your DH card.

They were deposited the day I received my e-mail statement. My closing date was the 24th. I paid the $2,000 on our Disney trip on the 19th and the points were deposited yesterday. I think they get deposited after your closing date.

I thought it was kind of funny to that they did not charge me the $69 yearly fee on the first statement. The balance of my first statement was just the 2,000 that I spent.

We booked our down flights last night. Now just need to get the return flights when DH spends his $2,000.

Please pardon me for being lazy and not reading the whole thread. If someone could just tell me if the $2,000 needs to be spent on SW travel etc or do you get the free points for using the card on any purchases that total 2k? We'd probably just funnel money through it unless you need to actually purchase tickets.

It can be used for anything. I had already booked our Disney trip and I just paid on it but I didn't book it through SW.

Remember that you will also get an additional 2,000 points when you spend the $2,000. So you will have 52,000 points to use.

Great!! Thanks so much!

So, still no Southwest flights here- but if anyone is interested Delta now has a 50k points deal.

We just got our 50k from American, and now we've signed up for Delta too. The Delta card was a great deal- 50k points and you only need to spend $1000, which was way less than on AA card. Plus if you spend it on a flight in the first something months, you get a $50 statement credit. We bought flights on delta last night, so we've already reached the spending amount and got the $50 too :)

Hi:) can someone help me with a few things please?! I read that a great way to get the companion pass is to apply for a business card and a personal card bc it would stack, I seen somewhere else where it was recommended to get a SWA card and a chase sapphire card and just transfer the sapphire points to the SWA RR card to get the companion. Any advice on this? Also would it be better for either me or DH to get two cards to get the companion or better that we each get our own? And one last question...can things like a mortgage bill or utility bill count towards the 2,000? Thank you for any help! :D

The Chase Sapphire transferred points do not count toward the Companion pass. I think you might be able to transfer them through a hotel reward program first, but they don't transfer 1-1, I think you lose 20% of them.

Both cards have to be for one person, you cannot have points for your DH put into your RR account.

If your mortgage company allows you to pay with a credit card (which most do not) then yes, it will count towards the $2000. Utility bills will as well.

Ok Ty. I read that about using chase sapphire points on nerd wallet.com glad to find out it's not true. Does anyone have an opinion about which card is a better pick?

When using SW points, if you find a 'cheaper' price for tickets I know you can rebook. My question is, if you reschedule, do you have to pay the $10 government imposed September 11 security fee again or does it transfer also? TIA

It will depend on how you went about "cancelling".

If you outright canceled the reservation, then you will have had the option to either refund the 9/11 fee back to the original form of payment or to take it as a credit.
  • If you take it as a credit, then you will need to use the confirmation number from the canceled reservation to apply the credit to your flight. Just keep in mind that credits can only be used by the person for whom it was originally spent.
  • If you take it as a refund, then you will have to pay the 9/11 fee again.
If you simply "modify" the reservation and choose the exact same flight(s) at a lower rate, then the 9/11 fee from the existing reservation never gets touched. If you used fewer points for your modified reservation, then they will automatically be refunded to the RR account from which they were taken.
