dh's cholesterol is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too high so his doctor suggested it. i got the book and did the shopping today. my fridge has more produce in it than it has in months! this is no problem since we like veggies anyway. i'm going to have to hit another store to get some of the items my local did'nt carry (including some of the cuts of meat and some of the fish).

so has anyone tried it-with what success? did you find that you stuck to the principles once you were off the actual meal plans-and if so did you rely on your own imagination or did you get the cookbook.

since dh is doing it and i want to lose some weight i've decided to go for it as well (and dd does'nt know it but she will be eating healthier as a result since i'll be doing the dinners/desserts for everyone).

any input on positive or negative experiences with it would be appreciated.

Not me..but try posting this on the W.I.S.H. board I know people there have done South Beach.

I started South Beach in March 2004. I lost about 52 pounds the first year, and about 7 the second year. And my cholesterol came down to reasonable levels. After a couple of months, it was so easy for me to make the right food choices, and yes, I'm still sticking with it. I'd like to lose another 8-10 pounds, but I'm OK where I am now.

There's a very good support forum here with message boards and FAQs for Phase 1 and Phase 2 as well as recipes: http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/index.php There are a lot of friendly, helpful people there! :thumbsup2

My DH and I started the SBD last year and had pretty good success. We didn't have a TON of weight to loose, but we each took off 20lbs very easily in about 3 months. We've both kept it off, and have just maintained by doing a "modified" version of the diet.
It's fairly easy to stick to the plan, and for us cutting out all the sugar was a huge thing!
Good luck to your DH!

thanks for the info. we tried our first breakfast today (the veggie fritata)-tasted realy good! i have to say that the recipies do look appealing so i think dh esp. will be more inclined to stick with it.

Here's a link to DIS's W.I.S.H. board thread for SB:

W.I.S.H. stands for "We’re Inspired to Stay Healthy," not something like the "Make a Wish Foundation" which I always though it was for. I wish they'd make it clearer on the Forum Jumps as to what it's about, otherwise people don't know. It's a great, little known resource & support board.

Yes, I did it and lost 8 lbs in the first two weeks. I still eat per the plan, and have lost a couple of more pounds, but I am at the weight now that I want to be, so I do "cheat" now and then. The way of eating that you learn is actually very healthy and I found that I feel much better overall eating that way. I do plan to stay on the plan indefinately.

The first few days are the hardest - at first you cut out ALL carbs, including fruit, and your diet is very limited. You will crave the carbs immensely, especially if you are a "carb addict". After the first 3 or 4 days though, when the sugars have worked themselves out of your system, the cravings are minimal. The thing I really missed in those first 2 weeks was fruit.
