I have both the Canon Rebel film and XT.

In the Rebel film, I know that you can change both the shutter speed and aperture. First you go into AV mode, change the aperture and then move into M and change the shutter speed. The aperture will be what you made it in AV mode.

But now in my XT, I can't seem to do that. When I go into AV mode, it changes the aperture and SS. Plus, no matter what I put it on (3.5 let's say), and I go back to M mode, it's 5.6. I thought it was maybe my kit lens - 5.6 was the biggest I could get, so it stayed on that. But now that I have a 3.5-5.6, that theory doesn't hold true.

So first, tell me what's going on and second, tell me how I can be in control of aperture and SS.

If you are in aperture priority the camera will choose the shutter speed. If you are in shutter priority (TV) the camera will choose the aperture. You need to set the camera on M (manual) mode to choose both. At least that is how it is on both my Canon XTi and 30D.

That's my problem. When I set it to M, and turn the dial, only the shutter speed changes. The aperture stays on 5.6. How do you change your aperture?

If I'm not not mistaken, the Rebel series has only one dial that does double duty. In manual mode, it adjusts the shutter speed unless you are holding down the AE button, in which case it adjusts the aperture.

With Canon xxD and xD series cameras in manual mode, the dial adjusts the shutter speed and a dial on the camera back adjusts the aperture

Oh geez, I finally found it. If I press the AV button that's found on the back of the camera and then turn the dial, I can change the aperture. I wish I hadn't lost my manual, it probably said all this in there. :lmao:

Thanks!

;) it does say it in there - but hey we all forget things and have those moments when our brains just don't remember what we want them to. Glad ya got it figured out. :goodvibes
