I got this info from a Sunpass email today, I hope it helps some of you that have asked about buying one and using it in a rental car.
Friendly Reminder for SunPass Customers Who Use Rental Cars
If you have a SunPass Portable transponder you may use it in the vehicle of your choice, even a rental car. Just remember to update your SunPass account to add your rental vehicle subscription. The vehicle subscription includes the rental car information and duration you will have the rental. You can easily update your account with the subscription by logging in at www.SunPass.com, and inputting the rental information within three business days of the vehicle's initial toll use. Or if you prefer, you may call the SunPass Customer Service Center when you first pick up your rental vehicle at 1-888-TOLL-FLA.
It is beneficial to add the rental information to your account, as many rental car agencies also have toll programs that allow renters to travel in SunPass, EPASS and LeeWay 'ONLY' lanes for a fee. These fees are set forth by the rental car agencies who use a third party to collect the tolls used from their fleet vehicles by a license plate recognition system.
Also, you can now purchase Sunpass transponders at Florida AAA offices:
SunPass Now Available at AAA Auto Club South
The Florida Department of Transportation recently approved AAA Auto Club South as an authorized retailer of SunPass.
Always adding savings benefits to membership, AAA now offers the SunPass Mini ($4.99) and the SunPass Portable ($24.99) at its Florida retail outlets. There are more than 50 retail locations throughout the state, as well as 24-hour access to the www.AAA.com website. AAA members are already saving on everything else - why not on their tolls and time?
