I got this info from a Sunpass email today, I hope it helps some of you that have asked about buying one and using it in a rental car.

Friendly Reminder for SunPass Customers Who Use Rental Cars

If you have a SunPass Portable transponder you may use it in the vehicle of your choice, even a rental car. Just remember to update your SunPass account to add your rental vehicle subscription. The vehicle subscription includes the rental car information and duration you will have the rental. You can easily update your account with the subscription by logging in at www.SunPass.com, and inputting the rental information within three business days of the vehicle's initial toll use. Or if you prefer, you may call the SunPass Customer Service Center when you first pick up your rental vehicle at 1-888-TOLL-FLA.

It is beneficial to add the rental information to your account, as many rental car agencies also have toll programs that allow renters to travel in SunPass, EPASS and LeeWay 'ONLY' lanes for a fee. These fees are set forth by the rental car agencies who use a third party to collect the tolls used from their fleet vehicles by a license plate recognition system.

Also, you can now purchase Sunpass transponders at Florida AAA offices:

SunPass Now Available at AAA Auto Club South

The Florida Department of Transportation recently approved AAA Auto Club South as an authorized retailer of SunPass.

Always adding savings benefits to membership, AAA now offers the SunPass Mini ($4.99) and the SunPass Portable ($24.99) at its Florida retail outlets. There are more than 50 retail locations throughout the state, as well as 24-hour access to the www.AAA.com website. AAA members are already saving on everything else - why not on their tolls and time?

Does the mini go on the outside of the windshield????

Yes, it does -- generally near the center where the inside rear-view mirror is attached.

Just a reminder that the Mini is not removable/portable -- once you stick it, you're "stuck" with it...

No, you stick the mini to the inside of your windshield. That's where I have mine.

That is just too cool. Just logged in and checked the new form for adding a vehicle. It is great that you can now add an end date. This is perfect for rentals. We always take our portable with us. Good to know you have up to three days to add it also without worry of getting violation if the transponder doesn't register in an express toll lane.

Mine sure looks like it has to be stuck on the outside or the bar code will be facing in the car... Or is it reading something else, I notice a little "lump" between layers on the pass...

There won't be a whole bunch of red lines on your car when you drive through trying to read the bar code, so it doesn't read the bar code. The mini actually turns your entire windshield in to an antenna. That little bump is where the technology lies.

To the OP. Is there a link to a news release or article on SunPass about this? I tried looking for it at SunPass.com, but couldn't find it.

SunPass e-mailed me directly last year and told me that it wasn't necessary to add the rental car to my account. And I didn't, and it all worked fine. I posted the e-mail here a few months ago. They said they already had all the information for all the rental cars in Florida (from the big companies, anyway) and it wasn't necessary. Maybe they have changed things, but it wasn't necessary last summer.

Actually, in re-reading that, I see it says "it's beneficial" (vs. required). I think that's to prevent being charged by your rental car company for the toll pay feature they offer. We just declined it on our last rental contract when we made the reservation (it was $2.50/day) and didn't have any issues.

Just my experience.

It is beneficial. If you don't register it and drive through a toll where the transponder isn't activated, expect a bill from your rental car company or at least extra charges when you return the car. We have had a situation where our transponder portable did not beep when we went through the express toll lanes. We had it registered, so it was not an issue.

We happended to take ours off one toll too soon, had it stuck to a tissue, but was able to get enough of it off that it was still able to reattach and work. Will wait until we get closer the next time.

The email (which I have not yet receieved, and thanks for same:)) indicates you can add the rental car after use (within three days) which would be a heck of a lot easier than doing it standing in the Alamo garage trying to find the internet on my 3G card before leaving the airport (which I have done, but it's a pain).

Is that how you folks read it?

Nope, it is not reading the bar code, it is reading the chip inside, "the lump".
