So You Think You Can Dance starts tonight!! Who's with me?

I wonder how they will deal with the Evan height issue. Can you imagine him paired with Kayla?

That's what my family wondered last night! It'll be hilarious to see him dance with someone who towers over him... and this is coming from someone who's only 5' at 22-years old so I can laugh at the short issue ;)

Enjoyed the show as well....was back and forth getting DS into bed, dealing with dogs etc so hopefully will have a chance to re-watch and catch all parts this weekend. General commentary:

For the most part agree with other posters, and am looking forward to the changing dynamic of new partnerships....this will really seperate the strong from the weak I think. :rolleyes1

One difference between me and I think alot of you is that I just cannot get into Evan (as I have said before ). I really think he is bottom 3 material and I don't see him in anyone's list. He is very nice, and very likeable but his dancing is just not on par with the other men. Granted it is close to some - but his days are numbered. I do echo others' comments that Phillip is weak and IMHO just yucky to look at. I really think Brandon is head and shoulders above all the other men. The women on the other hand are all very closely matched, and the change in partnership may help to seperate them. I can't remember from last year....could we end up with say 4 women and Brandon in the Top 5 - or is it only when you get to 3 that you could end up with uneven numbers? I would hate to see better girls leave just to keep around lesser quality guys to keep the numbers even....but I guess that is always a possibility?? :confused3

Anyway - I personally think Evan will be in the bottom 3 tonight, with Phillip and Jason. And I think Jason will go.

For girls Caitlin, Melissa and Jeanine and Caitlin will go.

This: :dance3: reminds me of Phillip and Jeanine's first dance :scared1:

Last night's show was really great. For me, I'd be happy if Melissa went home and either Jason or Phillip. Jason seemed a little goofy to me during the foxtrot whereas I think Caitlin did an amazing job on the foxtrot. She was beautiful and sexy and the dance suited her to a T.

Phillip just isn't that great when it comes to anything other than his hip-hop style. Jeannine (sp?) on the other hand is fabulous and her part of the jive was incredible!

Melissa is annoying, and as others have said, I don't know why. Something about her though drives me nuts and I do think that her and Ade are completely forgettable.

As for the rest, Brandon & Jeannette were amazing. I LOVED the bank robber dance by Wade Robson. I adore and have adored Randi & Evan since the beginning and am continuously rooting for them even though their samba was very weak (esp compared to how Kayla & Max danced it!). Still rooting for Caitlin as she is the hometown girl for me!

Tonight should be a good show!

What bothers me about Melissa is how she acts when she is being critiqued. I noticed it somewhat in their jazz routine with Sonja, and also during their pas de deux - they give her compliments and she never appears to be appreciative or thankful. Like when Mary puts other dancers on the hot tamale train, or judges give them nice feedback, many say thank you, or bow their heads or at least acknowledge it somehow! Melissa just smiles and does that little thing where she goes en pointe and her feet go crazy (does that make any sense??) I couldn't stand to watch them after they did the Romeo and Juliet piece because everyone was saying such great things and she just acted like "Oh yeah, I'm a ballerina, I am pretty awesome I know"

Last night I really liked Mia's routine with Kayla and Kupono, and Jeannine and Phillip's second routine (jive?). Brandon and Janette were fabulous in both. Caitlin and Jason were forgettable, as PPs have said. Melissa and Ade were also just so-so for me. Randi and Evan did well with their hip hop, but I wasn't into the Samba. Thinking maybe the bottom 3 could be:

Caitlin and Jason, Melissa and Ade, and a toss up for the third spot. Besides Brandon and Janette, all the others couples pretty much had a good routine and one that wasn't so great.

After Top 10 are chosen, they pick new partners each week, but still one guy and one girl are eliminated to keep the numbers even until it is narrowed to the Top 4 - always 2 guys/2 girls and from there "America's Favorite Dancer" is chosen.

This post really bothered me~ first of all if Melissa is old most of us on the dis should be picking out grave sites. That was a 100% rude comment.

2nd & most important~ dance is about fantasy. It is the art of being transported through movement & music. Luckily today in all the major dance theaters in the world dancers look different...all shades & ethnic backgrounds, it has enriched the world of dance.
Perhaps I can now see this because I am so "old" & thank goodness my niece is no longer faced with audition barriers that I was once faced with years ago.

I apologize, that was in poor taste, I just meant she was older than the 13-16 year old Juliet.

I just typed out a whole post and it never showed up... weird!

I think the right people went home, but I'm glad that they get to go on tour! Only one person can win so the tour is the big, life-changing experience everyone always talks about and I always feel bad when people make it so far and get kicked off right before the tour. I'm happy for them!

What kind of deal or contract does the winner actually get? Four of us were watching last night and nobody knew!

Glad Phillip is gone (sorry to the Phillip boosters out there). I think the right people went home last night. Thanks to xCourxCorex for the clarification on elimination procedures. Looking forward to the new pairings and the resulting mayhem!! I will be :happytv:

It varies year to year, and I don't think they've made an announcement yet for this season.

Benji (season 2) won a contract to dance in Celine Dion's show in Vegas.

Sabra (season 3) was the first girl to win, and won $250,000. She has been kind of missing since her win (Benji is an occasional choreographer for the show, and former dancers re-appeared in Season 4 for a routine/"where are they now" type thing)

Season 4 changed it up a bit, as Joshua was the ultimate winner and received $250,000. Twitch was the runner-up, but I don't think he won anything, however Katee was the top female dancer (3rd place overall) and won $50,000 I believe.

It is not clear if Season 5 will follow with the "America's favorite" winning $250,000 and the top male/female dancer (depending on who won) winning a lesser cash amount.

I was pretty surprised at the results last night UNTIL Nigel announces that Phillip and Caitlin would be going on tour.

I couldn't imagine that they would let Phillip go before the top 10 because I believed the needed him on tour. Having Phillip on tour sells tickets.

I do believe however, that it was his time to go. Aside from popping and locking he stunk at everything else. Unfortunately, I think this week was the 1st time he actually embraced the show and just went with it. Usually, out of his style, he just looked like he felt like a complete idiot. He had no confidence. I think that really hurt him.

Even though Jason was the better all around dancer, I really thought they'd dump him 1st so Phillip could tour. I think they knew that Phillip had to leave the competition or it would start to look bad so they arranged the top 12 tour.

I found it telling that they told Phillip and Jeannine that they didn't include the Russian dance in their decision. I don't think they got at all what they expected from those choreographers and I don't think they will be back!

I think Jason goes next week. Or Kupono if he is in the bottom. Mia's dance saved them.

I agree with everything you said...could've been me posting!

I told DH that I think they have Choreographers knocking down their door to get on the show, so they can afford to be mean to them when necessary!

Thanks! I thought they got something equivalent to American Idol's record deal, but didn't know what that would be in the dance world!

The only other dances I didn't like were Janine and Phillip's. The first dance was horrendous... it reminded me of the dancing dolls in the beginning of Shrek  I just don't like Phillip and can't stand that he's still there. I like him as a person and think he's great at what he does, but week after week he's horrendous at every other style yet he gets by. It's not fair to the other dancers who really are good at everything.

I agree about Phillip, I like him in his style and I appreciate the amount of work he must out in week after week to compete with trained dancers but this is a dance competition and he is clearly in over his head. I am so glad that the judges finally put him out of his misery and let him go. It was clear that they wanted him on tour so this is a good compromise. There is no way he could continue to compete at the same level as the other dancers, even the voters have seen that. I believe that when the Kalinka was chosen they believed that he would be able to pull it off but then the judges were placed in the position of judging the dance in comparison to the dancer and that was awkward at best.

What bothers me about Melissa is how she acts when she is being critiqued. I noticed it somewhat in their jazz routine with Sonja, and also during their pas de deux - they give her compliments and she never appears to be appreciative or thankful. I am not sure about that. I never pay much attention to the dancers reactions to praise, everyone handles compliments differently. Some laugh, some bow, some fold their hands together, some jump up and down and some cry. Melissa smiles and flutters her feet. I think that she is a little uncomfortable with the compliments and downplays them. Either way, I like her as a dancer, I think that she is really talented.

Well I am glad that that Phillip is gone. I love to watch him dance in his own style but honestly, it was painful to see him compete in any other genre. I believe that allowing him to go on would have been giving him an advantage based on a disability rather than respecting his ability. He was so gracious though, I saw how much he loved dancing adn how happy he was to have this opportunity. I can picture him in a dance acadamy teaching street dance to children along with a staff who can teach other styles.

My DGD takes dance in a good dance school and we would have loved to see her take the Hip Hop classes but they were a hot mess:scared:. Having the opportunity to take lessons from someone who is awesome in this dance form would have filled those classes.

I found it telling that they told Phillip and Jeannine that they didn't include the Russian dance in their decision. I don't think they got at all what they expected from those choreographers and I don't think they will be back!

I think the dance form did not lend itself to this environment. I wonder if the producers tried to find a dance genre that was physical enough for Phillip to carry off and get him into the top 10 without having the show look like it was rigged. I admit that I don't know much about Russian dance but this one reminds me of a dance that is predominately male and somehow seeing a man and a woman square off, it looked cartoonish to me. :confused3

I have to agree with most of what you said. But, I will have to say that I was not entirely surprised at Phillip's departure. Nigel set the stage for that with his spiel after Phillip and Jeanine ended up in the bottom 3. I knew Caitlin was the girl going home, and it didn't matter who was in the bottom 3 with her! I thought Jason may be going with her until Phillip and Jeanine ended up in the bottom and Nigel's comments.

they just get money now. I think Adam gave Joshua a featured dance roll in Step Up 2 but I haven't seen it so I'm not sure. I don't think that was on the official prize roster though.

But the main prize has always been money. In season's 1 and 2 where it was more amateur there was the Celine Dion contract (which BTW Benji turned down and tried to 'gift' to Travis but the producers wouldn't allow.) Season 1 (Nick) got cash and the use of an NYC apartment to help develop his career.

American Idol is still considered an amateur contest while SYTYCD has always been open to pros (provided they can get temporary release from their contracts.)

I thought the people who went home last night were good choices. I was really distracted by Jeanine's clothes during the results show. I have no problems whatsoever with the dancers wearing little clothing, but I thought the gold lame hoochie dress looked like something a streetwalker would wear. It was distracting when she danced.

I've seen way worse outfits on this show than Jeanine's gold one. Just sayin' :rotfl:

quick recap and the east coast bump.

bye bye Kupono. PLEASE. Uggg He swished his way though that and the solo wasn't good either.

Jason and Jeannine? Jeannette? Jeannine....Travis's dance. Awesome.

I didn't love Brandon and Melissa. It lacked energy to me.

Ade and Jeannette - Lovin me some NappyTabs this season. I liked it. He was better than her. He is growing on me.

Evan and Kayla - was mostly preempted by storm coverage but it was a waltz and I think it was good enough.

I liked both the boys dance and the girls dance.

Dance of the night - Jason and Jeannine
Bottom 2 - Kupono and Randi.

Do the viewers vote off the bottom 2?

I think that whichever 2 dancers (male/female) receive the fewest votes autommatically go home. No dancing for their lives, no judges' input. This is where it gets tricky to predict what will happen.

RadioNate, I agree with all your points. At first, while watching Kupono and Randi I was a little sad, because I don't think the chances of them staying are very high, but then I thought about it, and neither are really my favorite. So I think I'll be okay if/when they do go home tomorrow!

Jason and Jeannine stole the show with the contemporary routine. It was AMAZING!

I think Ade and Jeannette did well, as did Evan and Kayla. Brandon and Melissa seem kind of a weird couple to me..but oh well.
