"So what do you want to do next?" An April '10 TR...final thoughts 8/2 p. 63

Ok, I've seen a ton of these pictures, and I had no clue, "bats" were hanging with the flags, until I went to the AK.

Watcha doin for the summer, besides Disney in August.

haha, yes, there are bats. Creepy!

As for summer plans summer school starts Monday so that'll keep me busy until end of July (and a few hours at my other job...). Then we'll do the usual Brewer games and hopefully State Fair before our trip. Any plans to come to Milwaukee?

Hey Sarah,
I just found your tr and got caught up on it. You do a really great job talking about everything and I love all the pictures. My family and I are going again in July and reading your tr is getting more and more excited for it. I'm subbing and I can't wait to hear more about your trip especially the tour. BTW who wrote that hidden magic book you have talked about? It sounds like a really interesting book and I would love to read it before my trip.

Hi there! :welcome: to my TR! I'm glad you are enjoying it and that it's getting you pumped for your trip. :yay:

The HM book is written by Susan Veness...here's the link to it on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Hidden-Magic-Walt-Disney-World/dp/1605500631/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276743786&sr=8-1 I'd definitely recommend getting it for your trip! Thanks for posting! :)

Ohhh.. if you do we could do a Milwaukee/Wisconsin dis meet!!!! That would fun!! :)

Wow, I was so far behind.

Great picture from the top of Everest! I'm always chicken to try to get one - So afraid of loosing my camera. But the view from up there is great!

I don't think I've ever gone out to Camp Minnie & Mickey. One of those things that never makes the list. Looks fun thought.

Can't wait to hear about the tour! We're thinking about that one for December so I can't wait to see your review.

Yeah, a WI DIS meet would be awesome! :thumbsup2

Thanks! I love the view too. So cool.

The thing about Camp Minnie Mickey is that the only thing really there is FOTLK and the characters. But it is a cute little area.

Oh, cool! I LOVED the Backstage Safari Tour. Definitely worth the money.

That's neat about the rooms in Pizzafari!

Can't wait to hear about your tour! :goodvibes

Yeah, I can't remember what the other rooms are themed to but it is cool they put that much thought into it!

Tour update coming up...popcorn::

Friday, April 9, 2010 cont'd (part 4)

Let me preface this update by saying a couple of things:
1.) There may be possible spoilers in this post…so if you are thinking about doing the Backstage Safari Tour and don’t want to know what it’s all about, go ahead and skip reading this. :)

2.) There won’t be any pictures in this post…as you probably know cameras are not allowed on tours to preserve the magic. For someone like me who loves taking pictures it kind of stinks but obviously I understand why they don’t allow cameras. So you’ll have to use your imagination.

After our lunch and looking around some of the AK shops we headed out toward the main gates where we were supposed to meet to check in for the Backstage Safari tour. Around 1:00 we saw two CMs with a sign for the Backstage Safari tour (as well as another tour/camp of some sort) so that was our cue to go sign in. We found out that our tour guide’s name was Kelly. Let me just say she was great. I really liked her. Anyways, our tour group ended up being pretty small. It was just me, Dad, and then another father and daughter. When we signed in we all got name badges as well as these little headsets that we could use to listen to Kelly if the park crowds were too loud. Haha

Before setting off on our adventures, Kelly introduced herself. I believe she said that she used to work for Sea World or Busch Gardens before being offered the job at Animal Kingdom. She also told us how she got into education by volunteering at her kids’ school and then started subbing (hmm, maybe I should try to get a job at AK!). Then she had everyone in the group introduce themselves. We had to say where we were from and our favorite animal. Turns out the other father and daughter were there celebrating the girl’s birthday. So once we were all acquainted Kelly told us a little bit about the tour and how there were a lot of fun surprises we were going to see. I couldn’t wait to see where we’d end up! Then we were off!

Our first order of business was to get to a backstage area where we’d hop on our “magic carpet.” We were told that there was a lot of ground we’d be covering so it was nice to have that ride. As we made our way backstage (right near the Rainforest Café I believe it was) Kelly told us how there are over 4 million plants in the park from all continents (except Antarctica). Later on in our tour I remember seeing something that said without the rides and animals, AK would be the largest botanical garden in the world. Interesting!

Once we were backstage we hopped into our van, err, magic carpet, to head over to our first stop. I loved how Kelly tried to be all secretive about where we were going but she mentioned something about elephants while calling over there. WOOO, we were going to see the elephants (or atleast something related to elephants)!!! Another interesting thing we were told on the drive was that AK is built like a big salad bowl. All the area around the park is built up so when you are in the park it’s like you’re in the bowl. Who knew?! It was also funny driving around because they had signs along the road for Earth Day and Animal Kingdom’s “birthday”. This is going to sound stupid but I almost kind of forget (or don’t even realize!) there is all the behind-the-scenes stuff going on to make the park run.

After a few minutes we saw the giant structure that was our first stop…the elephant barns! We learned that the building can withstand a category 5 hurricane. OK, quick question: how many elephants does the Animal Kingdom have?

a. 6
b. 10
c. 12
d. 9

The correct answer? 12! Or to be more exact, it is technically 5.7. Are you as confused as I was when Kelly told us this? Obviously there has to be some meaning behind that…how can you have .7 of an elephant? Turns out the 5.7 means that there are 5 males and 7 females (or it could be the other way around, stupid me in my trip notes wrote males next to both 5 and 7…). Anyways…we then got to go into the barn to take a look around. All I can say is it was HUGE. We also got to see an elephant skull, tusk, and elephant hair, which was really more like wire it was so coarse. It was also pretty cute because they had pictures of all the AK elephants on the wall.

On the way out we saw a couple more CMs working with one of the elephants so Kelly told us a little bit about how they train the animals. Then we hopped back into the van to head to our next destination which was the Nutrition Center. At the Nutrition Center we got to see where they prepare the food for the animals and where they keep all the browse. It was pretty fascinating to hear that the animals get the same quality of food as all the Disney World guests. They don’t give them any less! We were also able to talk with another CM about this special gel that they can use if the animals need medication. Apparently some of the animals are like kids and don’t like their medication. I guess some of them even figured out ways to get their medication out of their food. So what they do is include this gelatin in their regular diet and if they need any type of medicine they just slip it in. The animals then are so used to the gel they don’t notice. Hehe

We thanked the other CMs for talking to us and were on our way to the next backstage stop. Where would it be…???

Up next: More Backstage Safari Tour and which animal did we get to see up close and personal?!?!

I agree we should do a DISMeet.
I know I am going to a Brewer Game Aug. 22nd. My dh work place is having their annual picnic there this summer. It's my 29th wedding anniv. too. My dh, came home and told me, he has our anniversary dinner picked out. I told him, I knew all about the Brewer Game.

We are heading to Elkhart Lake, Saturday, Nascar has a race. Can't wait, we are all big Nascar fans. The 2 girls and my oldest son are doing the 3 mile mud race Saturday in Madison. I wish I was more in shape, or I would do it too. My dd said it should only take an hour. It is running obstacle courses, running, slugging through mud. I think WDW had one on Mother's Day. I read a few TR's, mentioning a mud race.

Only a teacher leaves educational cliff hangers. Cool tour, I think I'll sign up for one next time.

The toor sounds really interesting!
I think that's really cool the AK would be the largest botanical garden in the world, minus the rides and animals! That's also interesting about AK being like a bowl... cool(: I can't wait to hear about the rest of your tour!

Oooo the tour sounds really interesting. 5.7 is a weird way to count elephants.

The AK is a bowl? Is that why it's always so hot? Is it a pit of heat? :rotfl:

I'd be down for a Milwaukee Dis meet too!

Love the description of the tour so far. Sounds like something I might be able to convince my sister to do.... hmmmm.

I never realized that the AK was like a bowl. I wonder what the purpose of that is? I'm sure there is one, it just seems kind of random doesn't it?

Yay! Backstage Safari tour!!! I'm surprised that there were only two other people with you. Not very popular I guess? :confused3 Not like Keys to the Kingdom. That tour is packed every day. That's amazing that the elephant house can withstand hurricane force winds. I always wondered how they prepare for such things. Looking forward to more details on the tour.

I just checked the dates for the rest of the games we have tickets for...we are going the 21st. Ahh, so close!

We never really got into NASCAR but have fun at the race!

You should definitely do the tour. It was a lot of fun. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I know, I learned so much on that tour. So glad we decided to do it.

LOL, I know. She even said they can add another number if there is a baby, so it would be like 5.7.1. I didn't get that...can't they just include the baby as a male or female? hehe

:rotfl: Could be. :rotfl:

That's a neat way for them to record how many males/females they have!

Yeah, I thought it was interesting!

I'd be down for a Milwaukee Dis meet too!

Ooh, cool, we could have kind of a big DIS meet. We should start a thread and plan one. I know I've seen some threads on the DIS Meet board.

I am almost positive the guide told us why it is like that...I want to say it's better for viewing animals? Like so they're above your line of vision? I can't really remember but I thought it was something like that. I could be wrong though. :confused3

No, I think we just kind of picked a slow day. Later on at the end of the tour we got to do something that she told us they hadn't been able to do earlier in the week because the groups were larger. But it was nice having such a small group.

I know it's not "close" but they seem to have done a few dis meets in Woodfield mall and around that area in Schaumburg, IL. I'm not quite sure where you all are, but for me it only takes an hour or so to get there.

I know they used to center around the Doorway to Dreams store in the mall and have branched out to ball games and such. I've seen them discussed on the podcast board.

The tour you went on sounds awesome! I may have to try that the next time I'm there...who knows when that will be! :D

Great character pictures!!:goodvibes Oh and the Backstage Safari Tour sounds so interesting! I would love to try it sometime!! Can't wait to hear more...popcorn::

Hi Sarah. As always when I'm new to a report, I write all my comments on a sticky note then cut and paste. So here goes:

I'm going to school to become a teacher. Right now, I'm working towards my associate’s degree in interdisplinary studies. I'm currently live in the same state as you. I do remember a few warm days in Wisconsin but not enough. (I was born and raised in Fl) It's so weird that I finally find a DISser who lives in my state when I am about to leave. What are the odds? Yay, for Chick-Fil-A being the arrival meal. It is my favorite fast food restaurant. Yup, there is a bowling pin pool in the 50's. I can’t recall if I've ever done the Astro Orbiter. Funny story about the skipper from Jungle Cruise. I think it makes it better when the skipper is animated and corny and not boring. The boy in the red hat had me cracking up. I have a confession. I like HSM too, I own all 3 movies. Has your sister decided if she was going to do the college program yet? The Disney episode of Full House was my favorite. (I Also the Family Matters Disney episode) RnRC is my all time favorite ride at HS. I don’t ride ToT alone and no one ever wants to ride with me. Do you know I lived here for 2 years and a month and I have not been to the zoo? Sad isn’t it. Very cool about the backstage safari tour. What a special treat, can’t wait to hear more about it. Very cool about an August trip. Now I'm headed over to your PTR, hopefully I'm not too far behind over there.

I love hearing about the tour. I still wonder how they get all the animals inside when the weather is bad, etc.

After reading the first part about the tour, I immediately looked up the prices because it definitely sounds like something Weird would absolutely LOVE. It'll probably be the second tour we do (first being Keys to the Kingdom), which means we probably won't get to do it until years later.

Loved all the facts and tidbits that you shared. I thought the elephant hair being similar to wire was really interesting! Haha, and the gel medication thing due to animals picking out medicine is funny. So much smarter than some of us may realize!
