Phone Setting on DCL

Good Morning All!

Please forgive me if this has been asked but I have tried to search and I can not find the answer to my question(s) and the last time I was on a cruise was 2022.
  • I know that when I get to port (Canaveral) I make sure my iPhone setting is set to airplane mode and on the DCL, I click "On The Ship" or whatever the wording is. Is that correct?
  • Now for my other question and for this forgive me but I am not tech savvy. I just got a Ring doorbell and when my neighbor installed it he informed me to stay logged in on the app; which I am ok with as I need to see who is at the door but it got me thinking about my upcoming cruise. I was thinking I need to log out of my account before I get on the ship, but my neighbor and a co-worker (who sails another line) say I don't have too. I don't want to be charged a fee (which I would think would be high) and I don't want to use up the wifi package I will have on the ship. Can someone please let me know what they do?
  • If I am missing anything else please let me know. I always think I am missing something as using the app seems so easy and it's simply putting my phone on airplane mode.

Thank you
Jennifer

If you have your phone in Airplane mode and then connect to DCL-Wifi to use the app (cause there really isn't a way not to), then you do not have to worry about your Ring notifications as they won't come through until you turn off airplane mode.

If you just use the ship’s WiFi for the DCL app and do not get a package, you will not be charged as long as your phone stays in Airplane mode.

If you get a WiFi package on the ship, you will pay per day, so additional activity on your Ring will not cause additional charges.

How your cell phone works while you are in port depends on your cell phone service. With T-mobile, I have free data in ports, so I don’t pay extra to send or receive messages.

Putting the phone in airplane mode means that your phone won't be connected to the 'signal' or to mobile data. So you don't have to worry about logging out of your Ring doorbell account, as long as your phone is in airplane mode it won't be connected to it. If you're extra nervous, you can go into your network and data settings and turn off mobile data (this isn't required, but is an 'extra step' if it makes you feel more comfortable). Just be sure to turn mobile data back on after your cruise.

You don't need to put your phone in airplane mode right when you get to port (unless you want to). Once you sail out and move to international waters is when you'll want to have airplane mode on so your phone isn't trying to search for a signal/ping international towers. I usually put my phone in airplane more when we hit the end of the 'channel' at Port Canaveral (where Jetty Park beach is and everyone's waving at you).

It is actually pretty simple, thankfully. Just turn on airplane mode first, then turn on Wi-fi. This will allow you to connect to the ship wi-fi, which will allow you to use the app. And yes, when you pull up the app you'll have to tell it you're onboard (it'll notice you're connected to DCL wi-fi and will prompt you).

When in airplane mode, the app will still have your login info, but won’t be able to sign in.

You will still get notifications from the Ring app, but I don’t think you will get the still picture if you have configured Ring for this.

One other thing I do on my iOS phone is to turn off data roaming. (Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Options -> Roaming Off)
The reason I do this is if for some reason you accidentally turn off airplane mode, you will only incur phone call/text charges. If roaming is off, your phone will immediately start doing all the background things it does and rack up cellular at sea charges.
