There are strains that are literally called skunk weed. As someone who has smoked weed, been around people who smoke weed, and — I kid you not — lived with a pet skunk, I can confirm that they smell very, very similar.
Scientific studies have even been done to determine where the skunky smell comes from. (Spoiler alert: It comes from 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol (321MBT). Geez, I would’ve guessed 4-methyl-2-butene-3-thiol (423MBT). Shows what I know!)

I went to a 6th birthday party at a kids’ play place this weekend and was hit in the face with the smell of skunk when I walked in. On the way home, it wafted through the car vents from another vehicle. I’m in Georgia where it’s still illegal, so I don’t know that it would be much different for you guys who have legalized it if you hadn’t. I think there’s just been a cultural shift and people are choosing to be open about it regardless of the law.
