So now what? Tax related

okay so, I did Turbo Tax--- I have for years...We have a pretty basic tax return. Turbo Tax did the math, I e-filed and was to have the money directly deposited into my account. The IRS gave me my money, but its $700 LESS than what Turbo Tax said I would get back. Does anyone know why there would be some disprecancy? Has this happened to anyone else?

did you check where's my refund on the irs website? If you owed back child support or some other things it usually has a link that would pertain to your situation.

no---this is just the FEderal...Turbo Tax has it broken down into Fed and State...

okay, I just went on IRS.gov and it says the same thing ... that it deposited $700 less than what I filed for, except there is no explanation as to why its less

I would just call the IRS directly and ask!!!! 1-800-829-1040 for assistance with tax questions.

Hmmm....

It could have something to do with that "Making Work Pay" tax credit. TurboTax is giving almost everyone the $400single/$800 filing jointly on the tax return if you make under the cutoff. But apparently, according to my stepmom/accountant, not everyone qualifies for the full amt.

Again...just a theory. But I might take the return to a CPA to see what is going on.

Sorry I don't know either but I actually got back $200 more than turbo tax said I would. I was wondering why it was taking so long. I should have gotten it 2 weeks ago and it was just deposited today.

I am starting not to trust these free online tax programs. Yours makes the 3 or 4th mistake I have heard of just this year.

When I put my information into Turbo Tax I didn't go into the spot that had the making work pay credit and it didn't show up on my refund (doing the free version while I was waiting to get my stuff in for my CPA). If I had submitted without that credit and was eligible for it, I would hope the government would catch that. Also, if you submit TOO soon, not all the forms are ready on Turbo Tax. I know the form for our Long Term Care insurance premium credit is not ready until Feb 15th.

My sister got significantly less than she was supposed to last year.

It turned out that her accountant had reversed a few numbers in her daughter's SS number. She had to resubmit everything and was eventually sent the rest of her money.


Hopefully your situation is something similar and you will get the amount you expected.

Nevermind--- I think I figured it out... my husband had been paying monthly installments to the FED on a penalty he received by taking money out of an IRA early. I think that instead of paying the rest of the monthly installments, the FED decided that they would just take that money directly out of our tax rebate!

We did this one year too! Probably about 10 or 11 years ago. I call the 1-800 number, and got a total jerk. I called it again the next day, the problem was fixed over the phone, and the shorted amount was depisted within about 2 weeks.
