So IS there any cough medicine that actually works?

StartedAJoke, just read your post about Benalyn--I remember that! Maybe I will try Benadryl tomorrow. Thanks.

Codine. Not only does it make me stop coughing, but I no longer care that I'm miserable. I took some last night. Floated two feet above my bed very several hours!

Tussionex is the cough remedy of choice in my house. It has Hydrocodone in it. One teaspoon lasts for 12 hours. It looks like glue and doesn't taste much better, but let me tell ya, it's good stuff! You'll need a prescription for it, it's not sold OTC unfortunately!

One word - Buckley's. I don't know if it's available in your area though.

I mean there's a reason why their logan is "It tastes awful. And it works". I don't remember most of the ingredients in it but I do remember pine oil and .... some kind of menthol stuff. It basically tastes like taking a sip of Vick's Vapo-Rub mixed with PineSol. BUT... within seconds - literally seconds - you'll feel your chest just opening right up, breathing is 300% easier and coughing is subdued too.

In our house, you know that someone is really sick if they're voluntarily taking Buckley's.

Robitussin with codeine is what you will usually get from a doctor by prescription. Otherwise, Delsym or Robitussin-DM OTC.

Usually anything with Guaitussin in it will help knock a cough. I use the Equate (WalMart brand) CF which is what my pediatrician told me to use years ago. DD would get these bad coughs and get really sick for about 8 months out of the year. After running her to Urgent Care and the doc several times this is what the doc told me to use. It works great - it's an expectorant, suppressant, and decongestant. I'm not kidding, it kicks the cough usually in a day or less. Breaks up the congestion and mucus and helps to bring it up (not trying to sound gross). This is the only thing I buy now.

Another coedine fan here!

Disadvantages: its a narcotic and addictive and some docs are relucant to refill it if you finish a bottle too fast and...

It makes you swollen.

And you can't take it in the day if you have to work and be alert.

BUT the pluses are the cough will finally stop and you'll get some great sleep. It really drugs me and I'm hard to drug!

Pur pharmacist recommends a dose of Delsym and a dose of Robitussin DM for night time. Take the Robitussin DM (or generic) every 4 hours all day and the Delsym to help you not cough at night. Works REALLY well!

Delsym is recommended by our pediatrician as well. I don't think it's very effective at all! When I asked the pediatrician why this was the cough med of choice the answer was that it was one of the very few out there that's "just a cough med" without any other junk thrown in. The pediatrician also feels that a daytime cough shouldn't even be treated...it's good to cough....unless it "interferes with your day to day activities".

He does prescribe a kick-butt nighttime cough med though! It used to be called Hisstussin but now I believe it's called tussinex or something like that.

Anyway, good luck with the cough!

If you don't have a prescription, and are just using the OTC stuff, try using some Vicks Vapor Rub on your chest at night. It will help you sleep.

Nothing works like good ole' Turpinhydrate with Codeine did! Wish I could still get it.

my fiancee had a horrendous cough (lasted over a month, she had to go for chest xrays and everything)

Mucinex twice a day was what did the trick for her.

The key is apparently to take an expectorant (like mucinex) it doesn't get rid of the phlegm but makes you cough it up, other types of "decongestants" dry up the phlegm, but that drys out your lungs and sinuses and can make it worse in the long run or more suceptible to get another infection.

I also get that "oh my goodness, she's coughing up her toenails" cough. The one where I'm in Target and I start coughing so bad that I start crying. Here's what I do... I keep Halls cough drops with me at ALL times. If I start to get a tiny tickle, in goes a cough drop. I mean I have a bag in my desk, a bag in my work tote, a bag in the jeep, and I keep a handful in my purse (yes, even in the summer).

But...all bets are off at night. When it's really bad, I can't lie down (drainage, etc starts another round of horrendous hacking coughing)...so the choice is keep hubby away w/coughing (as well as myself) or try to sleep while sitting upright. Neither works...so thank goodness my doctor will prescribe Robitussin w/codeine. I recently ran out (on a Friday night)...on-call doctors won't do controlled substance refills over the weekend, so it was Monday before I could get in touch with my doctor. I think it was a combiniation of being so exhausted from lack of sleep and being so sore from coughing that prolonged my recovery. YUK. I'd ask your doctor about cough syrup w/codeine!

Good luck and I hope your cough goes away!

For the tickle kind of cough, I've used Cepecol throat spray - it numbs up the throat and keeps the tickle away.

For the congestive kinds, I just take a lot of Nyquil and sleep it off!
