Smugmug

Thanks everyone! Gdad had replied on a previous thread a tad earlier, so I went with his code! I was curious though, after you upload to a gallery, how do you break down your photos within the gallery? For example, I'm loading into a main gallery title Disney 2007. Can I make smaller galleries within that one for each park? Thanks for the help - I've been looking on the smugmug site and just haven't found the "how to" info yet! :)
Blessings,

Well I have a "Disney Travel" category then "WDW" and "DW" sub-categories. Within the sub-categories I have my trips listed by date.

Look here.............Wkrider Smugmug

yes you can create subcatagories. You can do it in either the control panel or in the create new panel

I reccomend a program called "send to smugmug". It is free, though he would not mind a donation.

You can send large amounts of files. The drag and drop uploader kept locking up on me at about 15 photos. And also set galleries and categories with the interface.

Thanks Mark! That's a great idea! I have to finish the upload - there are over2000+ (not all are printing ones, but it is half of what I started with!:goodvibes ) It seems to take a while for them to upload - anyone have a faster method!?!:confused3 I've got my galleries set up by park and then I'm sorting into the groups I want password protected and for family only(kids). Smugmug is an awesome site - a bit overwhelming at first, but it appears to be very user friendly and the support service is johnny-on-the-spot! I can't wait to have a day to sit and just explore all the options with it!:thumbsup2

I see that on smugmug you can buy the pictures. Do they pay the money to the person who posted or do you get toshare in it or do they keep it all for themselves? Just wondering..

If you have a basic Smugmug site you can allow or not allow people to purchase prints from your site- or require a password to do so. Prices are processing costs only and go to Smugmug.

If you have a professional smugmug site you can set the price for various size prints in each gallery. Smugmug will set you up an account and you get the difference between your print sales and the processing costs.

I don't make much with my sales, but it is enough to pay for the "Pro" account costs. I only sell my volunteer theater shots. not any dis pics.

I had my pics linked in my signature here and was told they needed to be removed because I was advertising a commercial site. Since anyone could buy picws from my site. I locked the dis pics so you can not (easily) download them and can not buy them either. WebKathy thought that would be ok.

Anyone know why smugmug might be down? Did I miss a service window announcement or something?

It's been up and down all week...driving me crazy!

other than the cost ( smugmug being more) if you use one of these why did you chose one over the other
Thanks

I have no experience with Zenfolio- but I do like Smugmug a lot. I have had it for a few years- It seems very reliable, has a good interface for uploading, organizing, and displaying images. They also have a lot of photo sharing groups, including a Disney one. You can password protect individual gallaries, and right-click protect images to prevent unwanted downloading. If you sign up for a Pro account it has a good set-up for print sales. If you sign up for it you can save a few buck with discount code lEe8UiHgkWrYU

I chose zenfolio because I could order my prints direct from mpix, they also use ezprints...

this code will get you a discount with zenfolio...

I chose Zenfolio because I could choose where my prints were going to be printed and other than that the features that I would use were nearly similar so I saw no need to spend the extra money on smugmug.

It's a great dilemma. I can't remember seeing anyone unhappy with either service. I'm a longtime Smugmugger, but I've never looked seriously at Zenfolio, so I can't compare.

Here is a list of things I like and dislike about Smugmug from an earlier post:

Things I like about Smugmug:

1) Unlimited storage and bandwidth - I have over 10 gig of photos stored there.
2) Easy uploading - there are several uploaders, including ones that allow you to just drag and drop pictures or folders. You can also upload directly from Lightroom.
3) Easy backups - You can order a backup disk from them. There are also free utilities that will allow you to point to one of your galleries and it will download all of the photos for you.
4) Good privacy control - You can secure or hide galleries or pictures.
5) You can allow people to download the original size pictures if you want, but the pictures are also available for viewing at many other resolutions.
6) Video - You can upload videos and view them. They look much, much, much nicer than YouTube (see my latest attempt at video here). You can even post 1280x720 HD videos with a Pro account.
7) Good tools for organizing, re-arranging, and managing your photos.
8) An iphone interface that works well on other PDA's (like my Blackberry) for when you want to show someone a picture while away from home.
9) Traffic tracking so that you can see what photos people are looking at.
10) Communities - for sharing photos on similar topics (like the Disney) community.
11) RSS feeds so that someone (like Grandma and Grandpa) can subscribe to your photos without you having to notify them when you've posted new ones.
12) Link to Google Maps for seeing your photos mapped
13) Pricing control - so you can set the price for prints by gallery.
14) Pre-print proofing - so you can let your customers pick the pictures they want, then tweak them before they are sent to the printer.
15) Control over Google indexing - Let it find some pictures and prevent it from finding others.
16) Incredible support - they read and answer e-mails. They have a resident pro that will gladly offer you advice.
17) Their own forum dedicated to photography in general as well as their site in particular.
18) It's obviously owned and run by people that truly love photography and technology. It's a great combination. Here is a great article on the company.
19) Constantly improving - I've been with them for several years and the site has seen steady improvements in their interface, performance, and offerings.
20) Customization - They let you do a tremendous amount of customizing of your pages. That's one of my goals for 2008.

What I don't like about Smugmug:
1) They deal only with sRGB images. They can't print Adobe RGB. It's one reason that I do my own printing at home rather than ordering from them.
2) They don't embed EXIF data in the resized JPG images. You can only see the EXIF by visiting the site or by looking at the original image.

I can't comment meaningfully on the quality of the print services that they use and don't use. I've never actually seen a print from them. People that have printed my photos have told me that they are very happy with the print quality, but the fact that they are printing my photos shows that they aren't all that particular.

Thank you for posting that.
I am currently with flickr but my year is about up and I was looking at smugmug.
I do like flickr except for the privacy options.

Does Smugmug allow hot linking of photos?

I'm not sure what "hot linking" is. If that means being able to link to a photo there and have it appear in a thread here, than the answer is yes. Lots of the photos you see on this site are links back to Smugmug.

I did a search on Zenfolio over on the Smugmug forum. I found some interesting threads on the subject. The general consensus seemed to be that both services are quite comparable and very, very good.

Thanks, yeah thats what I meant about hotlinking.
Looking at your vid, the vid quality looks ALOT better than youtube( I kept waiting for one of the sledders to knock you over..lol)

I think I will be moving over to smugmug :)
