Smugmug

I'll jump on this bandwagon. I've had Smugmug for three years and have been completely happy. I consider it my permanent backup for photos too, and I take a lot. It's easier for me to find my photos there than on my home backup, so often if I want to print one of my own old ones I just download it from Smugmug.

I like the ease, quality, and professional look of viewing, the unlimited storage, and the fact that they are not throwing "order prints now" in your face when you view. I can share with family and friends easily, and it's nice that any of them can download full-sized copies if they wish.

I had an issue or two early on and was contacted immediatley. I consider the annual fee for all that a good deal.

I also love smugmug! I like the extra backup and easy sharing. I do have a link in my signature, but I have my settings on smugmug set so that prints can't be purchased at this time. I may change that later on, but I have a lot of work left to do in getting rid of bad shots & editing others, and setting up passwords for a couple of galleries.

I just left the purchase stuff at default. If people want to buy prints, more power to them. I do this stuff for fun. If they want to download full resolution originals, they can have 'em. In fact, I posted a thread over in the scrapbooking section back in December that's still getting hits from people wanting to use some of the shots. If you don't mind sharing your shots, let the people over there know and they'll be very grateful.

Interestingly, I've talked to several professional amateur sports shooters and they absolutely hate amateurs with DSLRs. They undercut their prices or even give shots away for free. It's hard to make a living when you compete against free. I sympathize, but I also think it's just tough luck. No one is guaranteed a living at what they want to do.

I have seen some posters on the DIS, mostly on the Theme Park board, where the Smugmug watermark on the pictures makes them almost irritating to look at.

I just wanted to clarify why I have it set so that others can't buy prints. I have all of my personal photos on there...like friends' weddings and such, and I didn't think it was "OK" to sell Disney photos. Not sure if what you were saying had anything to do with my post or not, but I thought I'd clarify anyway. :)

Thanks for all the replies. I don't plan on selling any of my photos. I like the layout of the SmugMug sites that I have seen and I like the fact that it is spam and add free. Thanks again to all....:thumbsup2

I wasn't trying to criticize your approach. I was just saying that I don't bother to do anything to protect my shots. If people want them, that's no skin off my back.

Make that a Saturn - and a Saturn minivan at that. :lmao:

i have the canon and a saturn...but photobucket so as usual one step behind the cool kids;) ...what do you mean smugmug charges according to bandwidth. for some reason photobucket has been having problems lately and i might be switching when my contract is done.

Jann,

They have 3 teirs, tier 1 and 2 are the same except you have more bandwith you can use, which means you can upload and download more pictures per month. In the year I have had it I simply never came anywhere close to using the bandwith given on the first tier.

If you choose to go to smugmug, get the lowest tier, and if you get to where you use it too much then you can upgrade, but I doubt you ever will.

I just upgraded to the pro site for a few reasons, but bandwidth wasn't one of them.

I didn't think you were. No offense taken at all. No critcism to your approach either! :) I just wanted to clarify that part of why I don't do it is to "protect" the people in some of my photos (although I should really just password protect those if I'm worried about it, I guess) and to not get in trouble for selling Disney photos. It seems like I had read about one of the sites removing Disney photos. Was that smugmug or photobucket? I can't remember. :confused3

On this point, I agree 100%.

(See folks, Mark and I actually agree on a lot of things. :) )

FYI -- The users put that watermark there, not smugmug. I use smugmug and love it!

I am aware of that, Jessica. I do see where my reply on this thread might make it look like I thought smugmug was doing it. I know many here use smugmug, with little or no watermark. I was referring to specific instances, not the host in general. Point well taken.

could you come up with a symbol that you could attach to those posts so we aren't so shocked when one comes up ?( ;) gotta admit i got a kick out of the "holy wars" threads :rotfl: )

I use it. I even popped for the pro account.

If you like it after the free trial you can use this code EDfLfDAAygNVM to get $5 off. and I get a little somthin' from it as well.

I have been a member for maybe three years so I have not read the signup details lately.

Mikeeee

Thanks, I am going to sign up and I will use this code...:thumbsup2

I guess I should have researched this a little more first, huh? I shot in RAW today for a friend. Now I uploaded my pics to PictureProject, but I can't get them to open in Photoshop or in SmugMug. Is there any way to change them to JPG format to do this? I wanted to do some selective coloring in PS, and the girl I shot for wants to buy some prints.

Thanks!
Lisa

RAW is a capture format. It's not great for viewing or sharing photos. I think every camera that allows you to shoot in RAW comes with some software for converting RAW files to other formats like JPG.

Photoshop CS, CS2, and CS3 can all do this via Adobe Camera Raw.

When I try to open a photo in Photoshop CS2, I get an error message that says "Could not complete your request because it is not the right type of document."

Any ideas???

I was having the exact same problem with PSE 5. It would not recognize the RAW format. I had to download something from their website and it has worked perfectly every since. It has been a while ago, so I am sorry I cant remember what it was exactly, but if you search their website the answer is there. I just recognized that you are experiencing the very same problem I had with PSE 5. Hope this helps you.:thumbsup2
