Smugmug

I'm not sure where the zenfolio guys are.

You should take a look at zenfolio as well. I'm a very happy Smugmug user, but there are a lot of very happy zenfolio users as well. The services appear to be very competitive on features. I think the Zenfolio feature that Mickey88 touts the most is that it gives you a choice of printing companies, one of which (mpix) he prefers.

Thanks Mark...::thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

that is correct. MPIX is a great lab and since I have been using them for years, that was the point that sold me on Zenfolio,

as for customer service, the few times I've emailed them with questions, they replied within 30 minutes

I'll throw in a word for Zenfolio ( www.zenfolio.com ). I've been using if for about a week and started with the free 14-day trial. I've had limited experience, but it's been easy to navigate and seems to offer the same types of perks as smugmug. It was also a tad cheaper.

Thank you for the feedback. I think I will be signing up with Smugmug. I've been home sick and started to upload my photos. The ones taken on my DSLR are taking a long time. The price I pay for high mega pixels.

I like smugmug, plus I got the free camera strap from them and free stickers.. Nice comfy strap too :)

i just went with zenfolio as well since it's cheaper but as far as i can tell has most of the same features( plus i like mpix as well plus the option to sell things like mugs and junk..i mean high quality articles....through ezprint)

about zenfolio customer service...as anyone who posts here regularly has caught on(:rolleyes1 ) i am less than computer literate...well i was trying to set up a website:headache: :headache: :headache: :headache: :headache: :headache: :headache: and couldn't get much help from the site( microsoft office live) but i asked zenfolio and they actually went to the microsoft office forum to find the answer for me( after i had emailed microsoft a number of times) then emailed me back..i have probably emailed them 10 times over the past 3 days( no exaggeration) and they have been fantastic...so for any other computer illiterates...they are really great!

It was mentioned that zenfolio has the option of printing to mpix - who does Smugmug use for their printing?

After losing my imagestation account I've been playing with photobucket.
I've got a webshot account but it is no use for sharing photos on the DIS.

They added a new "feature" which gives you square thumbnails in your gallaries. I personally hate it, so went searching to figure out how to turn it off. I found this information.

Hope it helps someone be a little less frustrated than I was.

I actually like the square thumbs option and have had it since joining smugmug last year.
Its been available to power and pro users with the "bulk zoom thumbnail" feature. :)
Maybe now it'll be easier and quicker to implement, although unlike "bulk zoom thumbnail" the new way doesn't allow the user to pick a portion of the whole image to be in the thumb, rather it just centres it automatically.

I noticed that this morning on a gallery I uploaded last night. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it yet but it appears that most people on that dgrin thread like it.

It seams to be a love it or hate it proposition.

One gotcha if you do like it is it automaticly grabs the square out of the center of the photo, so on a close croped photo, your going to lose heads etc. If you want to choose where it grabs the square from, then you have to go into bulk features.

The reason I got so lit up when it was happening to me, was it was taking the head off of every single batter I had shot, and no one is going to click on a headless thumbnail.

My biggest problem is that a new feature should not be made the default, if it is something that is going to change the look and feel of what you have set up, you should have to choose to do so, not choose not to do so. just my 2 cents.

I posted it on the dgrin forum, which is directly moderated by at least one of the owners of the company, so in a round about way yes.
