Smugmug

I've never dealt with zenfolio but it does sound very similar to smugmug in most regards and I'm sure I would be satisfied had I gone that route.

But, out of any online site that I've dealt with, photo site or anything else, I have never been more impressed with the customer service as I have been with smugmug. I can honestly say that it's never taken longer than 30 minutes to an hour to get an email response to a question I've asked on any day of the week. Most of the time it's probably less than that. And, as others have mentioned, the dgrin forum is a huge help.

Things I like about Smugmug over Zenfolio:

1) HD Video compared to no video (the decider for me)
2) Geotagging
3) More users - bigger communities, more traffic, more 3rd party tools
4) More customizable

Things Zenfolio has that I wish Smugmug would add:
1) Virtual Folders (why make me waste space duplicating pictures?)
2) Batch keyword editing

Great news Mark, SmugMug already has Batch Keyword editing!! (We have actually had it for 4 years now)

If you go to the "Photo Tools" menu, just select "edit keywords/captions bulk"

PS--I work for SmugMug

Welcome to the Disboards Ham1. You have a pretty good following among the members of the board.

Yeah, I have popped in here once and awhile, but now I have decide to support it a bit more. We try really hard to support our customers wherever they may live.

i've gone away from PBase, where i was a paid member for several years. i now prefer Flickr. they have a great community, good collection of groups, and you can control what sizes are available to different people.

I have Flickr but I plan on going to Smugmug. I hate that flickr made you set a yahoo account. Its a pain..I can be chatting on yahoo messenger with one account then if I want to access Flickr at the same time I have log out.

Plus I like the fact that smugmug also has video capability that looks better than youtube.

If you enter the word: flickr in the coupon code field when signing up for SmugMug, you will get 50% off your first year.

Plus if you go here: smugglr.smugmug.com you can transfer all your photos easily to SmugMug pirate:

That's great. Now how about the virtual folders? And what about bulk geotagging?

We are evaluating and virtual folders or smart albums so to speak. Bulk geotagging is on our list to do, but unfortunately it is a ways down.

Smugmug even sent me some stickers and camera strap for free.

One thing I would like to see, with the basic account you can view stats to see which photos are viewed, but it would be nice which photos have been purchased and/or downloaded. That and virtual folders.

Hi

I am looking for a referal for Smugmug.
I get a discount you get the referal credits

PM if you are willing

thanks Dave Goofydad Dionne

Looked at your site and liked the layout and flow. Are you on a Standard or Power User account? I currently am on a trial account and have been "warming up" to smugmug but am still on the fence as it seems that some things can only be done with a Power User account.

Thanks.

I just have a standard account.

have you looked at Zenfolio, they are similar to smugmug, slightly less expensive and also allow print ordering from mpix in addition to ezprints..

Yes I have. I was not as happy with Zenfolio as I am with SmugMug. I have to qualify, that I have used PBase for about 6 or 7 years and still like it. I only photoshare, do not use for photo storage and for the most part, do not need the "purchase prints" portion.

Both of my out of town daughters like Zenfolio a little better than SmugMug but I have found a few of the optional view capabilities that I like on SmugMug but I don't like the way they do what they call "vanity URL's" being only available with the power user account and only being links between the vanity URL and the SmugMug setup URL. PBase does this as a standard when you set up the gallery without any linking or premium account. Also thought "Smugaloupe" was pretty cool.

Example of what I am talking about with the URL's. Same pics in both galleries but different sites. SmugMug considers this PBase URL a "vanity URL" and according to the info they sent me requires about 5 steps to setup the link.

http://11290.smugmug.com/gallery/4768006_SmRAy#282809182_kHBG3 ( actually longer than what shows up here )

As I said, I AM warning up to it and may go ahead and set up a standard account parallel with PBase (still have about 9 or 10 months on it) and just maintain both accounts for awhile and see which one I and my family like over a longer period of time. Since I setup the trial account I have been working overtime and second shift so I haven't had the chance to really do a lot with it. Just too many "away from computer hours".

Just my $.19 (($.02 adjusted for inflation)

I have been happy with SmugMug. I had to upgrade to a Pro account when I purchased a D300 due to the large file size. You can see my SmugMug page at http://richardamartin.com

I wasn't aware that there was any difference in the size or number of photos that Smugmug allowed for normal, power, or pro user accounts. I thought it affected video sizes but not picture sizes. In fact, I have a friend with a D300 that uses a normal Smugmug account and has never complained of a limit.

From Smugmugs help section............................
The current size limitations on photos are:

* 12 megabytes for Standard and Power users
* 24 for Pros
* 48 megapixels for all users

OK. A D300 takes 12 megapixel photos, so it's about 1/4 the limit there. 12 megabytes, is a very, very large JPG. When taking pictures with my 8 megapixel camera, I usually get JPG's in the 0.5 to 2.25 megabyte range, well short of the 12 megabyte limit.

The only time these limits should impact someone is if they are stitching together large panoramas.

The JPEGS I take with my D300 average 9 to 11 megabytes. With the some images going over 12 megabytes. While most images would upload to SmugMug for a standard or power user, you still run up against the 12 megabyte limit for some images.
