Smoking Rooms and my complaint

I have a room booked at WL for next month and its a standard view room. I hadn't given thought to the smoking issue, assuming that even with a nonsmoking room, we could smoke outside on the balcony. However, I've been reading previous posts about how people in surrounding balconies find that offensive. So, trying to be considerate of other guests, I decided to call to change to a smoking room, only to find that you have to pay the extra price to get an upgraded room if you want a smoking room. They have no smoking rooms in the standard view price category. Can I ask how this is fair? So now I either have to pay more to smoke on my balcony or be inconsiderate and have the smoke drift to other nonsmoking rooms. I have to say I'm a little upset about this. I love everything Disney and defend it to everyone around me, but now I'm starting to see some injustice. Is it just me, or does anyone else find this a bit unfair? :confused3

Are there no smoking rooms in a standard view catagory, or are there just none avail. at the time you will be there?

I'm sorry if you feel you're being discriminated against for smoking, but Disney has to consider the extra maintenance costs associated with smoking rooms: replacing musty drapes, carpeting, bedspreads and wallpaper more often than in non-smoking rooms. Also it may be that the breakdown of the room categories may coincide with the breakdown of ventilation areas.

Also, if you have a smoking room (even if it costs more), why the need to smoke on the balcony? That would still probably send smoke onto the balconies of other guests who paid for non-smoking rooms.

I thought you had to request a non-smoking room and weren't even guaranteed it. I just booked on line and they asked if I had any "special requests" and one of the options was "non-smoking" room - with the disclaimer that all "special requests" could not be honored.

How can they be calling "non-smoking" a "special request" and charging more for a smoking room?

I smoke on the balcony as I never smoke indoors out of consideration of my daughter. I've stayed at other hotels where it was no extra to get a smoking room, so I'm not sure why it is with Disney.

If I am paying for a smoking room, why wouldn't I be able to smoke on my balcony if I felt like sitting outside, I don't think that is very fair?

To the OP, when I stayed at the WL I paid for a standard room with a request for a smoking room. When I got there, they automatically upgraded me to a courtyard room b/c smoking rooms happens to fall I believe on the 5th floor. And I didn't have to pay for it. Maybe that will happen with you.

I'm a non-smoker, and I have severe health problems with cigarette smoke (won't go into it here). Personally, I think it's very unfair that someone who smokes can't get a regular room rate.

Not to say that everyone would, but many people would just book the lower rate room anyway and smoke out on the balcony or even in the room. Not every smoker is as considerate as Cinderella822... :guilty:

When I requested the smoking room on the phone, I was told it would be at a higher rate. How did you book a standard smoking room? Maybe I could request it upon check in and see what happens. I opted for the standard room as I'm not in a position to pay more now for an upgraded room.

I guess the nice guy finishes last. I know many people wouldn't even be concerned and smoke anyway in the nonsmoking room. It does bother me when you try to do the right thing and you still can't get ahead. :sad2:

When I booked the WL, I didn't know there was a choice between non smoking rrom and smoking room...I just booked a regular standard room and put as a request on my reservation- smoking preferred. When I got to the desk at check in I again asked if they had any smoking rooms available, so they put me on the courtyard view room on the 5th floor . I didn'y have to pay extra b/c it was a smoking room at the time. It didn't even seem like there were any smoking room in the standard rooms at all they were all courtyard view rooms. So that is not fair to charge for a smoking room. I would ask to speak to a manager about that cuz then they should have smoking rroms available for standard rooms and not just the high rate rooms.

Thanks for your help. I think I'll leave it as is with a standard room and upon check-in, I'll speak to them about it and see if they can do something for me. If not, then I guess there's nothing else I can do. :confused3

Thats what i would do wait and speak to someone there. It seems to me that there are more non smoking than there are smoking people so they might be able to accomodate you. Omce you get there and ask to speak to a manger I doubt you will have any problem getting a smoking room

Well, be happy there are smoking rooms. At the GC resort in CA the entire resort is non-smoking (yeah!!). This is good for us, not good for smokers of course.

If you smoke, even on your balcony you will get a $200 fine.

The information CRO gave you is right. All standard rooms at WL are non-smoking.

I am with the "no smoking on the balcony" of any type of room. We stayed at the WL in a Courtyard View room for 4 nights last November - non-smoking. The first 3 nights were WONDERFUL - great room, center of building, looking out over the lake. The weather was great and we were able to leave our sliding doors open on our balcony each night and we enjoyed just sitting out there in the evenings. Someone new must have checked in our last night there and smoked on the balcony. Needless to say, we were not able to sit out there at night and could not leave our doors open. As this was our last night I did not say anything but if we had more nights to go, I would have definately said something at the front desk. I do not know what the "rules" are as far as smoking on the balcony of a non smoking room (or smoking on the balcony of a smoking room) but please, smoke inside of a smoking room.

On another note, we spent 3 nights in Coronado Springs this past May in a non-smoking room. When we checked in, the room reeked of smoke. We were able to change to another non-smoking room that did not smell of smoke.

You need to take out your frustrations on Disney - not the smokers who are following the rules that Disney has set forth.. If there is no "NO SMOKING" signs on a balcony, then the smoker is doing nothing wrong and you are in no position to tell them to smoke in their rooms.. If there IS a sign, then you need to question the powers that be at Disney as to why they aren't being enforced.. :flower:

Now THAT is my kind of resort.

As I stated in my post, I do not know the "rules" of smoking and would check this out with the front desk before I spoke to my fellow guest in the next room.

Well that's good to know - because so many people tend to harass smoker's who are smoking in areas where it is in fact allowed.. The obeying of rules should work both ways.. :flower:

yes, all standard rooms are ns and when you are asked to pay more it's because of the view, not the smoking room. but due to the demand for nonsmoking rooms, i'm sure you will be offered a smoking room at check in if u ask. i don't think the balconies are restricted, but it's nice that you have the courtesy to be considerate of other guests. it's really not feasible for disney to "monitor" balcony smokers anyways. but if they do, i wouldn't mind that job ;) just give me a whistle and i'll be set! :teeth: (and btw i AM a smoker that tries to be courteous of others)
