Smoking Rooms and my complaint

I agree...my dd has asthma and has been told by her ped NOT TO BE NEAR any smoking if at all possible so we have a medical request as well my TA said would be honored. But what are ya gonna do?? People are gonna smoke if and where they want to. I have to move her, pain? Yes but oh well.

Not everyone who smokes smokes where and when they want to! There are courteous people who believe just because it is thier habit....there is no need to share it with others....gentle look...

Well said! As a smoker I have always asked that Disney put me far from the maddening crowd so to speak. I do not want to earn the wrath of the masses because of my nasty little habit., I have always been courteous and have looked for the furthest point( ie: hidey hole,) from all people when smoking and I just will not smoke indoors. I do not want to contribute to any medical condition that any child or adult may have...and there appear to be more and more conditions being diagnosed (as I see from reading this thread)....and like the smokers...they go to WDW!! Go figure!!! Disney must be consistant with what and where they put smoking rooms. Some bldgs are designated smoking at various resorts and then I read that some resorts have them scattered amongst the "good people's' rooms. I honestly dont want to put up with the glares and complaints...more so than non smokers want to glare and complain! Disney does need to revise its policy on smoking and non smoking rooms.....stepping down from soapbox...and moving aside for next person...er...thank you very much....small bow.

Couln't have said it better myself. The last thing I want is to cause someone to be sick or be on the receiving end of nasty glares. There have been more than a few people that I see on a regular basis who have been surprised to find out I even have this nasty habit, as I also seek out little hidey holes around the corner away from everyone.

Seems designating certain blocks of buildings/rooms and designated areas around pools and lobbies would go far in eliminating these sort of problems and keep everyone happy.

Just want an area where my fellow smokers and I can go and slowly kill ourselves without bothering anyone else

Well, be happy there are smoking rooms. At the GC resort in CA the entire resort is non-smoking (yeah!!). This is good for us, not good for smokers of course.

If you smoke, even on your balcony you will get a $200 fine.

Perfect example of the CM's inconsitancy......all rooms INSIDE the Grand Californian are non-smoking, and there is a $200 fine. But I was told that people could smoke on their balconies and not get fined as long as Mousekeeping couldn't/didn't smell it when they came in the room.

Disney doesn't post no-smoking rules on the balcony because it's only non-smoking inside. From what I've always been told, smoking is allowed on the grounds outside anywhere most of the resort property, balconies included. Disney has restricted the smoking in the parks, but not at their resorts yet.

Personally I think it's very nice that the OP is trying to be nice to the non-smokers that will be on either side of their room. However, if they want to enjoy a cigerette outside on their balcony I do believe it is their right at this point.

i wished they enforced the no smoking in the parks except in certian areas. i saw people walking through the crowds with cigarettes and also in the outside eating areas where this is the only place you can sit with your children and eat your snacks and ice cream.

i was burned at 6 flags by a person smoking. they do not enforce this at this park and i no longer go there. now disney appears to now enforce the no smoking in the parks either.

No one has to see animals, the castle, courtyard, lake, pool, sleep in a big bed, be close to the food court or smoke.

(in a nice tone) what did everyone do before there were even smoking rules inside the parks and restaurants? Did you not go to Disney? If they made different sections of the hotels with non smoking versus smoking building, then what would happen if the smoking building ahd the best location or view, then would the non smokers complain that we got the better view and write to Disney Managment again!

*Those with medical conditions is a total exception to anything I feel. They have a right to not want to be around smoke and I completely respect that...but those that just don't like people smoking just cause.....

There are a lot of things I don't like , like people sneezing and coughing without covering their mouths and their germs get all over me - ewwwwww ...well that bothers me and affects my clean health but I don't complain about it

I really wish they would not allow smoking on the balconies at the AKL! This is coming from a former smoker who still lights up on rare occasion, so I really have nothing against smokers, except the inconsiderate ones.

I was out on my savannah view balcony and my son and I were scanning the ground with our little binoculars looking for lizards -- hey, we don't have those where we live, so it was fun! Anyway, I was so disgusted to see cigarette butts littering the ground. Why would any moron throw cigarette butts on the savannah? For crying out loud, you're not even allowed to have straws on the property, so why would anyone think a cigarette butt would be any better for the animals?

Sorry, that just really upset me.

Regarding the OP's dilemma, I hope you find a good solution to this. It doesn't sound fair at all that you should be penalized for being a smoker. You sound like a very considerate person.

I would never be able to sleep in a smoking room. Heck, we were in line behind someone for the GMR who had a ducked out cigar and I almost got sick from the smell. We actually let about 10 people cut in line ahead of us it bothered me so much!I also totally understand the medical needs of a non smoking room, as I am a nurse.

One of the posters said their asthma was so severe that if someone was smoking on the balcony of their own room and the smoke seeped into the closed up room of the poster, that it could be fatal. I certainly hope you are planning on wearing an N95 respirator mask or some other fine particulate filtering mask in the park, because many many people ignore the designated smoking areas. If your allergy is truly this severe, I would seriously consider taking some sort of mask along to avoid a trip to the hospital. Tons of people walk and smoke, especially in the World Showcase at Epcot.

On another note, for those smokers who want to quit, and have not been successful, I highly recommend Wellbutrin/Zyban. I have firsthand experience with 5 people quitting by using this stuff, and it helps keep you from being so edgy while you are quitting.

I have to second the Wellbutrin. I'd quit smoking in 1999, but the cravings still haunted me for a few years. In 2002 I went on Wellbutrin for depression and I didn't crave cigarettes at. all. Ever!

On the other hand, I have to say this, perhaps it's a "hint" for you to STOP SMOKING! I don't say that to be judgemental, but because nothing good can come of it healthwise.

I'm a non-smoker and I would be totally offended if someone were smoking on the balcony of a non-smoking room so much so that the horrific smell floated over to my non-smoking balcony. But, if you have a smoking room and you want to go out on the balcony, I think you should be able to. It sounds like you are considerate of non-smokers, which is not always the case. Many smokers here in NC think it's their "right" to smoke. And it is. But it's my right not to. I personally thank you for being considerate.

Major Kuddos to all those smokers who are considerate of others when and where they smoke. I am one of the many that appreciate that.

Growing up, my father smoked. We have funny stories about how traveling in the car in the winter we had two choices. One, have him roll down the window a little bit(and freeze) and most of the smoke goes out the window.........the negative to this was that everytime he "tapped" his ciggie out the window, some ash came back at you if you were sitting behind him. Two, have him NOT roll down his window and nearly suffocate to death........not a good choice either.

Unfortunately he quit smoking too late and died of emphysema. My heart goes out to anyone with this struggle. I struggle with weight so I know a little something about dealing with a habit that I need to get under control.

I don't know if it's right or not, but I really see the WDW hotels going totally non-smoking in the future. More and more places are doing it and here in NY, ALL restaurants (except I think for SOME bars) are non-smoking. I must say, I REALLY like that. I don't have to wait for a non-smoking table to become available while looking at some empty tables in the smoking section and I get to eat my food with only the taste of the food in my mouth.

I DO NOT, however, think it is right to charge extra for a smoking room at WDW since they allow smoking at the resort. If they are going to allow smoking, then they need to have rooms on every price level.

I don't think you'll ever see that happening - mainly because WDW has guests that come from all over the world and from countries that are not as adverse to smoking as people are in the U.S..

As we are so often reminded, WDW is a business and they are in business to make money.. They will attempt to accomodate everyone rather than cut out a certain percentage of their business..
