I have both kinds. Got my first electric can opener a few years ago and I really like it. Cuts from the side, so no sharp edges. I sometimes use it to open pop tops too, to get the smooth edge. You can put the lid back on if you need to store in the fridge for a few days. I also have an old-fashioned church key opener for certain items where it’s the best option for easy pouring. Liquids in cans with non-pop-top lids, eg. evaporated milk and pineapple juice come to mind.

I haven't had to open a can in awhile, my dudes. If it's soup, they typically have tabs. But if I were to find myself in a can-opening circumstance, I will go for the manual because it's all I need.

We have a manual one and an electric one. We have almost no counter space, so the electric one is in our lazy cupboard. It's a pain to dig out, so I usually just use the manual one.

I use a manual, the type that cuts along the side of the can.

Growing up my parents had an electric (with a knife sharpener in the back!). Not avocado though, more like a copper color.

Same here! I used to have an electric one that just took up space. Now I use a good old fashioned manual one. I love kitchen appliances, but this was one I didn’t need or miss at all.
Same with us. When ours died we never replaced it. Never had an electric can opener that worked very well anyway.

Growing up we had a counter-top electric one, and it was great, but I can't justify the counter space and money as a single guy. I've used the same Ikea one for 7 years.

I have an electric one that I haven't used in a while. My husband (well, I guess I should say his mother) never used one so any time he would open a can it was always with manual, so I converted. I do have a couple ancient manual ones but the one I now use most often and LOVE is my Pampered Chef one that opens from the top and with a smooth edge.

Growing up we had an electric can opener. The newer style Oxo hand openers work wonderfully.

I have always used a manual one as an adult. My mom always used electric and it was always gunky and gross, so I swore when I was on my own I would never use one.

I was fine using a manual can opener most of my life, however my two left-handed family members prefer the electric; something I never considered.
