I think medium rare is best. If I am not cooking it myself, it may depend on the restaurant. Well, actually, I never get steak at places where I would have to tell the chef how to cook a steak. That is to say, I don't get steak out often at all, but when I do it's a nicer place that knows how to do it.
This is how it was for me growing up too. I always liked well-done because that's all I ever really had. A bloody steak seemed gross to me! Of course, a properly prepared mid-rare steak isn't really "bloody" at all.
Medium rare, which I didn't know was possible growing up. My Dad cooked all of our meat to within an inch of burned. Any red at all, he considered it not done. Which is something, because he was a meat cutter and dealt with raw meat all day. It must be the way his mother cooked it when he was growing up.
