My parents started sending me to week-long sleepaway camps when I was 7 and I loved it. It taught me independence and self-reliance. Unlike a lot of the freshmen on my wing, I didn't suffer from homesickness when I went to college one bit and I credited sleepaway camp for it. DS14 and DS10 attend a camp run by Camp Fire and they love it. They hike, cook outdoors, do ropes courses, ride horses, swim, kayak, etc. They were really sad when they couldn't go last year. I spoke with the camp director a few weeks ago and was pleased with the thought they put into their safety protocols and the experts they consulted (local public health officials and public health doctors). We plan to send our sons as long as the local infection rates continue to decrease.
