Skipper Canteen "push"

I definitely think that people with ADR's for lunch, who may walk past and see "Oh, we can eat at Skipper Canteen without an ADR!?" are not going to cancel their ADR for that day and pay $10/pp in cancellation fees. Maybe Disney will waive that fee!? Who knows.

I'm not thrilled about the menu, but it's a nice option for something different. We will probably try it out once.

We went there about a week ago and loved it. Our appetizer (arepas) and dessert (kungaloosh) were absolutely fabulous!

No ADR is a deal breaker for me. We are doing our "exotic" meal at Sanaa on our Animal Kingdom day instead.

If Skipper's Canteen opened up ADR, we would reconsider. We love trying new places .

Dear Disney, make this a character meal that we can book with an ADR and we'll consider going back. OR, drastically change the menu and make this a signature (yes, a signature in your flagship WDW park, please!). Otherwise, the bland food simply doesn't justify the inflated prices. This restaurant needs a massive do-over. Imagineering was asleep at the wheel on this one.

I still haven't been able to figure out why they don't accept ADRs. I wonder if a lot of guests are reluctant to give up a sure ADR time ( relative, to be sure), for a possibly longer, uncertain seating time at Skippers. Personally, I'm looking forward to trying it on our next visit

This is *exactly* my position. I plan for a big group ( 14-18 people depending on the trip ) and I can't afford to not get a table and then have to just go t a counter service. NOT BECAUSE we don't love Disney counter service. But we like to all get together for dinners at a nice sit down. We were VERY eager to check out this place, and then terribly disappointed that they take walk-up only. There are rumors that they will start accepting... but until they do...

We had the chance to eat lunch there last month but we looked at the menu and just headed over to Columbia Harbour House instead. We love CHH and that was our only chance to eat there. The new restaurant would be interesting to try but not if we have to give up a favorite.

I disagree with this part of your comment. The interior was a good blend of homage to the Jungle Cruise and Adventureland as a whole. I think Imagineering did a good job on making this out to be the headquarters of the Jungle Cruise Ltd., complete with a mess-hall like environment as well as more intimate spots that the bigwigs would use.

Again, the food was not great, very salty and it took forever (25+ minutes) to get two of the "easiest" dishes out (pho and mac n cheese). Those are the reasons I won't recommend it. I do think they should've let alcohol be served but it doesn't detract for me the way the experiece with the food and service did.

Before I opine, I must say that I think that Disney plans very carefully, and I assume that they must have researched the opinions of guests regarding the theme and menu of a new eatery prior to finalizing plans. That said, I don't think the menu is ideal for MK. I'm a foodie, so I'd give it a go (well, if the reviews were a little better) but no way is anyone else in my family going to eat there. They'll eat steak, but if we're going for steak at WDW we're going to go somewhere we know has great steak. MK needs a place with a menu like the Rainforest Cafe. It could be a scaled-down version of it and that place would be packed from open-to-close. Alcohol would be nice, but I think they could make it work without it.

I do agree with you on this, very creative but..... when we went we were taken on a complete tour of the restaurant by a Skipper before we were seated. The restaurant was practically empty. We ended up being seated in the mess hall and really had wished we had been seated in one of the other rooms. While the mess hall is appropriately decorated - as a Disney guest, I felt like I got short changed by not being able to enjoy all the wonderful imagineering in the other rooms. I get it but if my odds aren't good of sitting where the room matches the prices, I'm on the fence about returning. The mess hall felt like a big food court while the other rooms felt table service quality.

We ate there last week. We were those people who they handed a menu to and begged us to come in. My oldest DS loved his curry veggie dish and my youngest had "taste like chicken because it is" and loved it. The falafel appetizer was amazing. My entree was horrible. It was the rice noodles with vegetables. In all fairness, our server told me that it is the top dish to be sent back. I wanted to try it anyway and guess what? It went back. It was horrible! I don't think I have ever sent an entree back. I could barely handle the first bite. Our server said the chef said it was no surprise. By the time it went back, everyone was almost done eating, so I didn't order anything else. I don't think we will be returning. Even though they have some great entries, it is expensive and when a dish is bad, it's really bad!

Regardless of a restaurant's theme or decor, the two most important things that bring people in are the menu and prices. This place is a failure on both those counts. The prices are not in line with the type of food being served. And the food options are not well rounded enough for everyone to find something to eat.

If they had opened Trader Sam's in the same location, with the same "no ADR policy", and served cocktails (like the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Rum and the Uh-Oa!), the place would be packed. And if they opened Trader Sam's in the same location with an expanded menu, ADRs, and no alcohol, it would be fully booked just like any other TS restaurant in the MK. But no alcohol and no ADRs is a losing combination. Gotta have one or the other, and ADRs would be the least controversial of the two. Expect to see menu changes before Memorial Day.

They actually told you that and the chef wasn't surprised??? This restaurant has red flags all over the place. Maybe if they paid me I would eat there....

Can you believe that!!! They told us that dish is sent back more than any other. I will never return!

I would probably stop there if the cast members were beckoning us in, but I wouldn't go out of my way to try it. Prices seem a little steep for food that is a little risky. I'm not terribly adventurous, so I would really be taking my chances.

What I want to know is why is the item still on the menu? Surely the chef has the authority to make changes???

1) But, how many ADR's could be outstanding at MK?
2) There are not that many TS-eateries inside the park.
3) I think there are far more hungry people than available ADR's.
