Skills Testing in Phy Ed

I don't understand how you can be mad that her skill was graded for archery, yet happy with the idea that her skill will be graded when it comes to stuff she excels in, like running and hockey?

I'm not happy that her skills will be graded AT ALL.......OMG why is that so hard to understand????

Yes I am happy that her skill will bring up her grade, but if the skill WEREN'T GRADED IN THE FIRST PLACE it wouldn't matter how good she was at those other things...KWIM????

You may not become the next Jordan but you can improve, that is my point. those who can perform a skill better should receive a better mark.

We don't have all the level that you speak of so I have no idea how that works.

Yes you can improve and sure you should get a better grade if you are good at something but failing a kid who is really trying and just stinks is not fair either.

You must have taken a very different gym class than anyone I know. The students don't organize tournamnets. Coaches, teachers and the Athletic Directors do.

Then dollars to donuts they are not meeting their potential in math and science, whether dad is a physicist or not. The core of education is fed by the humanities. If you ignore them we'll have a population of very poorly educated folks who happen to be good at math. That's not any better than the alternative.

The OPs DD may not have mastered the skills of archery, but she was exposed to something that she hadn't previously been exposed to, she learned something that added to her educational experience. She is better for it, even if that isn't readily apparent.

I took golf as a PE extra curricular credit when I was in high school. I have no interest in golf, not my thing. I took it because I thought it would be an easy A, and I liked a kid who was taking it

I didn't 'need' golf, I haven't had to rely on golf knowledge. But it added to my educational experience; learning about the game, how it's played, the history of it, how it is scored, how to improve technique.

Adding more to your learning plate is never a waste, IMHO.

I do understand that some people believe that and that's just fine and dandy, but I am getting annoyed at being called hypocritical because I am happy she brought up her grade.

No need to get upset with me, I was responding to your first few posts.

I guess I disagree that it is a big deal, being graded on skill. It sounds like only part of her grade anyways. And it doesn't sound like she is all that upset about it, either.

When these issues have come up in this area, you wind up getting the argument that it should count against those who don't met the standards in phys ed., because academics count against students w/ learning disabilities, even though it is all but impossible for them to meet some of the standards in that arena. I can see some room for agreement in that position, but I think we're way past the time of cookie cutter education requirements. If we can take the time to give convicted felons individualized sentencing, certainly our society can approach education w/ at least as much thought.

Ok...just checked the grades online again and they just got graded on the 10 minute run and like I said the child can run like the wind, so she got 100% on that test!!

So her C is now a B!!

So, you are happy with a good grade based on skill for something she can do well?

So students should only take courses they are good at?

Of course not. But should we punish a child for not being good at something like archery?

WHat about the kids that can't run well yet they aced the archery part. It just sounds like you are upset because your DD didn't get an A. You have to keep in mind that schools educate 1000's of kids, not just your DD. They offer a wide variety of courses for that reason. Your DD is not going to be the best at everything. Personally I would chalk it up to a great learning experience for your DD and maybe next time she will try harder to do better at something that doesn't come naturally for her???

No, but are the rest of us??? It is no different then taking a math test and while you don't see the importance of archery there are others that do. It is a good skill to learn, the concentration, coordination and strength taken to perform the task well are all important things to learn. I could say the same thing about riding a horse, where is that going to get you in life other then a long way away from where you started. Again, you are upset because your DD didn't do well, fine, that is your right but again, it is a good learning experience for your DD to try harder next time.

You are ALWAYS being tested on your skill in EVERY class, PE is just a physical skill while math is a mental skill--yes SKILL--again, you can have all the knowledge you want about a subject but it doesn't mean you are skillful in that subject. Not all students have the SKILL to write a good term paper or the SKILL to conduct a proper science experiment or the SKILL to perform complex math problems. It is NO DIFFERENT.
