Sister Wives

Just watched the "purity" episode. Robyn is crazy. Where is the idea that all your choices in life lead to the next phase? If she hadn't married Jessop, she never would have divorced, never would have met Kody, never had 3 kids...ARGH. That line of thinking was nuts! And how can you get your purity back? Isn't purity a nice way of saying virginity? Once the cherry is broken, that's it right?!

DD & I laughed at their getting dressed up to have "church" in the living room. Really? you can't just wear your pj's? Isn't that one of the advantages of homechurch?! It's pretty sad when your kids are really bored with homechurch. I'd think it would be better than real church bc you can make it whatever you want it to be. This show is a trainwreck I can't stop watching...

I agree. I watch things I hate all the time and do not know why I do it. Is it me or is Kody getting more obnoxious as the episodes progress? REally? He is a pig!

Here it is: Reva's Caramels
1/2 lb butter
2 cups sugar
2 cups Light Karo
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 can evaporated milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped nuts (if desired)
Bring to a boil together (250°-320°)
Add 1 can evaporated milk slowly so mixture doesn't stop boiling.
Boil to firm ball stage (245°-250°)
Remove from heat and add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
Add one cup chopped nuts if desired. Place in well buttered pan and cool. Cut and wrap in wax paper.
ENJOY!!!

If we opt to make this, does that mean we are now "married" to Kody too?

I do think he said you need to be able to make these to be "worthy" of being his wife. Haha. If you make them let me know, I want to try but I have never done candy and am not sure how I will make them work. Any tips will be appreciated. I have a meeat thermometer but none I could use for candy.

You need a candy thermometer & you need to check it's accuracy(don't ask how I know). place it in boiling water & see what temp it reads, from there add or subtract to 212 degrees & add or take off that amount to the needed candy temps. Candy thermometers are very inaccurate.

I will have to make these for my annual gift trays at Christmas but I am going to call them Kody's Karamels. :lmao:
I always try a new candy or bite size treat every year...this is the new one...LOL. I hope they are yummy! I don't think I have ever had caramels with nuts though. I will make a "girl" pan and a " boy" pan and then report back... I do have to say that I prefer making a "pan" of things that can be cut up rather and a hand rolled cake ball or candy that then has to be hand dipped. Those take forever.

Oh, not much risk of that. My family says that when it was time for God to hand out the cooking genes, I was back in the sewing line for a second dose. ;) I'd be highly insulted if it wasn't true.

Feel free to send me some though if you try them. :)

to be fair, most kids don't enjoy church. church is boring, even to me(but that's a whole other story in itself that i won't get into lol) so i don't blame most of those kids for being bored.

my parents' church has what is called "junior church" for the smaller kids and they make it fun for them and i think that's a good way to go.

i also laughed when Kody was like "oh we thought when we moved here that we'd have friends coming in and out and doing church with us on the weekends!"

....did he think that many people would want to visit them? also, did he think there were that many polygamists in Vegas?? these people....

Just read that TLC will be having a 1 hour special with another polygamist family on Sept 15th. He has 5 wives. Should be interesting to compare the inner workings of the families.

One thing I really want to know (and am unlikely to find out from next week's Q&A) is: What is supposed to happen to the "surplus" boys in the FLDS polygamous paradigm? Obviously in any given demographic there are not 4 (or more) females to every male. What becomes of the men in the eyes of their church if they are not successful in competing for the available women? In North American society where polygamy is generally abhorrent it is also unlikely they would find many willing women outside their circle, if that was even allowed. This is a legitimate curiosity of mine. If anyone here knows (in relation to FLDS or any other polygamous culture) please explain.

A fair number of male teens get driven off, sent to other places, etc. The older males ("church elders") aren't interested in competition.

In many cases the boys are cast adrift, cut off from their families, often with little education or money. There are some organizations who try and help them. If you goggle FLDS Lost Boys there is a lot of information.

Thank you both for replying. I wonder if the Browns would acknowledge this and what they would say it implies for their sons?

most of the boys in the FLDS sect are kicked out by the elders. as you said, there's enough wives for the men but not enough men. there's been a few documentaries about that happening to the boys, it's sad. they get kicked out and know nothing of the outside world.

If this plural marriage thing is a tenant of their faith, what do they think this implies for such boys (their own sons) spiritually? Anybody knowledgeable enough about the theology to comment? Any regular LDS on here that could explain?

I don't think that it relates to them all that much, given that 1) Kody isn't marrying child/teenage brides, 2) they are drawing from a much larger dating pool (not an isolated community), 3) most of their children don't seem very interested in polygamy and they don't seem to be pressuring their children or anyone else to engage in polygamy, and 4) their sons are getting the education and life skills to be able to live in general society (unlike many boys who grow up in polygamist compounds). Even if all of their sons take multiple wives (and this seems highly unlikely), and take an extra 40 women off the market, it's not that means that other young men who want to get married won't be able to.

This applies more for the secretive sects of the FLDS. The Browns have said many times that their part of the religion are very different then the compounds and abuse in the other areas. The boys in kody's own family have been shown, I remember 1 being monogamous and 1 having multiple wives.

now see, they've claimed that but i believe it was last season when they found out some of their children really DIDN'T want to live as polygamists they weren't too happy. i mean it was even complete with a Robyn ugly cry about how "you raise your children to do what's right and then you find out they don't want to live this life" or something along those lines.

How long is an episode of Sister Wives? Last week my DVR taped a half hour episode but it didn't seem like it was over when it stopped recording.
